I can't think of many personally, but what games have you played that you regret playing for some reason. Maybe that it was completely boring, or it hurt you (psychologically|) in some way, or that you payed way too much for and then found in the bargain bin a week later for a few bucks/pounds?
Personally, I'd say Viewtiful Joe.. not bad as such it just didn't do much for me. Not my kind of game at all. The graphics almost saved it though.
Fantavision, a game which I really didn't enjoy and wouldn't take if it was given away free. |

Lionheart. I didn't even come close to finishing. It was just so horrible. The dev $ should have gone to Van Buren. After giving up this horrible scat monster I tried to rationalise that the cash I spent would help keep IPLY afloat so they could continue making VB(FO 3).
It was a totally horrible game. I hate Lionheart. Bad Lionheart, bad!
I even reread Foucalt's Pendulum to get into the mood for it. Took a month.
Bad bad bad Lionheart. _________________ I felt sheer anarchic joy when I ran over my first pedestrian. |

there are some games that i regret buying, but i'm not sure if i really regret playing any of them. if we're going to consider these two as part of the same idea, then the latest ones that come to mind would be Steambot Chronicles and Atelier Iris. i just can't find anything worth playing in either of those titles.
the first game that ever did this to me, though, was Robocop 2 on the NES. |

Never played Lionheart but I like Henk Nieborg's art for it.
Wasn't Fantavision a DOS animation program? Research tells me it was both! Neat. _________________ | Little bird fighting against a bat sect game | |

KotOR II (a few hours of it anyways)
Shenmue (quite a bit of it, way too much even, and then when I rebought a dreamcast, I tried it out again for an hour or so, yuck!)
Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble (I felt compelled to play, but it was terrible, but luckily this was shortly before I lost all of my DS games, so I didn't get so far).
Eternal Darkness (I made it all the way through this one unfortunately) |

Also, Contact.
Of course they're more games I regret buying than playing. Playing them simply expanded my understanding of videogame badness. This is usually not worth money.
There are some games I regret playing more than once. Xenogears comes to mind.
There are games I regret being a fanboy of. Hello FFVII.
But honestly my time isn't very valuable. I'm embarrassed easily but if I recognize the badness and didn't waste any money, I enjoy playing psychologically damaging games. What's wrong with me? _________________

Oh, you!
I'll say Yoshi's Safari because it was the first (only?) incredibly bad Nintendo-published game to feature one of their flagship characters. It kinda hurt my image of the company.

Huh? Care to elaborate, there are a couple of pretty neat games there (to my mind). What is it about them that makes you regret sinking lots of time into / buying? Is it their trite superficiality? Or are you being ironic. [Edit: yep, I reckon it must be irony] |

You know, I really don't see how any of them require genuine explanation and I resent that they should somehow be questionned while others above remain spared, because Hey, Nintendo, Am I Rite?.
But yes, on the whole, it's their superficiality, and how desperately and pathetically they try to overcompensate without any real development in the gameplay proper. Shenmue feels and plays like a poor-budgeted Z-movie, Super Mario World is vomitously garish in its design, while having horrid graphics and forgettable themes, much like GoldenEye, Final Fantasy VIII, Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Country 3 and Sonic Adventure 2 really don't need any explanation, Chrono Trigger is just shit, from story to gameplay, but at least tries to put effort in its narrative by making its combat system not completely unwieldy, tepid and unpredictable.
There's probably a ton of NES and PlayStation 2 titles I haven't mentioned, because they're so forgettable in their horrid creation. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!"

The majority of my gaming regrets were from my NES childhood. I was a whiny, spoiled brat towards my parents when I wanted a new title. I'd deal with my pangs of guilt by escaping into said games. These, however, are games I absolutely hated playing through.
Dash Galaxy in the Alien Asylum. - I rented this, alongside Dragon Warrior when I first came down with the flu some time in the 5th grade. It was like Jumpman Jr on my C 64 with shittier physics and horrible level layout. Goddammit I hate Color Dreams games.
M.U.S.C.L.E - My sister wanted Commando. I had final say and convinced my pops to buy M.U.S.C.L.E. because I collected the figures in the trashcans. When we returned home my sister said the game was ugly, didn't have enough guys, cried, and then hit me with her Pogo Bal.
One time my father and I were at Carrefour and MegaMan was on sale. My Dad offered to get it for me (gifts from an abusive father were rare) but for some unknown reason I opted for a set of "Squarbles." |

MW 2 on PC ("ATI 3D RAGE" whatever.)
It came free with my Aptiva about a decade ago.
For the time I thought it was pretty good.
Got me back into games- from about 1990-1995/6 I just ran 8-bit stuff on emulators. Plus Doom and Doom 2 for a couple of weeks each before I got bored.
And some apogee stuff.
I'll bet there is someone out there that liked Lionheart. _________________ I felt sheer anarchic joy when I ran over my first pedestrian. |

P.S. Only good Zelda is the original Zelda. Link's Awakening and Majora's Mask get props also. Xenogears: I tried to stop playing this game many times, but instead, ended up saving right before a boss that I couldn't beat. It hurt because instead of rejecting the game, the game rejected me. Also I never killed God
Banjo Tooie: Made Donkey Kong 64 seem like a really good game.
Bounty Hunter: Could have been kind of cool, but just sucked instead. _________________ Straight up |

So hold on, is this the "games we regret playing" thread, or the "games that suck" thread. Maybe it's the "games that I think I'm cool for not liking" thread?
I regret playing Halo 2 after work sometimes because I get home at like 7:30 and feel like I wasted all of my free time at work. Sometimes those post-work hours are sooooo worth it though, so it kinda balances out.

You know, I can honestly say that I've never regretted playing any game. I've gotten at least a small bit of entertainment even out of the worst games I've played, even if I made that entertainment myself by making fun of the game. _________________

I really liked Mercenaries. Maybe they mean the mission briefings? It had some intro movies to set the scene and all, but I don't remember it being very cut-scene-centric.
I'd almost like to see a script of the dialog from that game just to see the differences between the 3 main character options. Some of the banter with the mission briefer was kind of amusing.
I thought the main thing missing from this game was in terms of civillian vehicles. |

No, I'll probably give it another go at some point. Perhaps after I finish my current play-through of Half-Life 1.
Chrono Trigger hatred makes me think someone's just got an axe to grind...? I mean, it's Chrono Trigger. It's not, like, Beyond the Beyond or Legend of Legaia. _________________ antitype.livejournal.com | last.fm |

Wow, really? I never expected to see ED in this thread. I kind of expected it, being a cult classic and all, to be a hit here at TGQ. Truly curious as to what was so arduous about the experience, since I thought the game was extremely original for a survival horror.

Eternal Darkness is a real love-it-or-hate-it title. I've seen many a flamewar between people who think it's one of the greatest games ever produced and folks who think it's a total hack job, from the gameplay to the graphics to the story.
Personally, I think it's mediocre-to-good. It's got a lot of neat things going for it; the overall implementation means that it's often pretty tedious. |

We need to have a talk about the type of anime you watch.
The only game I can really truly say I regret playing is Halo 2. I thought the first one was a decent game--solid, if not exactly packed with amazing gameplay or even a mediocre storyline. I didn't buy in much to the hype for the second one (having no XBox helped) but as the release grew closer I was getting pretty intrigued with the idea of the first game's fights being taken to earth and the whole humanity vs. invading force concept in that universe. Plus, it was hard not to get a littly hyped about the whole thing working the midnight opening at Software Etc.
When I finally played the game however, seismologists in Japan registered my crashing disappointment. The invasion storyline hyped by Bungie since day one was crammed into a single map, and the rest of the game was more of the same repetitive corridor-crawls as the first one only look! They added fog. And the sword. Add to this the bump-maps not rendering on the models until a second or so into cutscenes and the way the game just cut out at a point where any other game would be picking up steam for the conclusion and you have the most disappointing game I have ever played. And for that, I regret doing so, because maybe the Halo 2 in my head--though I'm by no means a fan of the series--might have been glorious and wonderful and everything the real game wasn't. |

Do you really regret playing these games? I mean, honestly, at worst they helped shape your opinion of what games you do like. It's not like they're not memorable. If I were to talk about any games I regret playing it's the hundreds of NES roms I would play and forget about during class because I should've spent that time paying attention to class, but that's the worst of it.
Christ, look at these lists. Someone regrets playing Chrono Trigger. And unless regret is a different word to you than it is to me that's just stupid. _________________ Wii #: 8749 9109 9732 3653

Yes, I honestly regret investing any time and/or money in any of them, as the ones that did shape an opinion shaped my standards for the worse for a long time. That you find that difficult to believe is mind-boggling. I mean, fuck, why not apply that sort of bewilderment to any of the other games mentioned above? No, suddenly a Mario and Square game are brought up, and all is suddenly lost. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

One game that I come to regret playing at times is Street Fighter (the entire flippin franchise). There are days when I perform to perfection and can pull my combos, perform multiple hit specials, and confirm link to supers. All is well.
Most of the time however my spacing is wrong, I miss an opening that my opponent practically handed to me, or can't parry. I will become angry with the world for that one moment since I know I could perform better. There is no other game that brings out this side of me other than Street Fighter. Taking a loss from tactics that I know I shouldn't have fallen for and failed to perform to the high standards I have set for myself. The rest of the night is met with a terrible mood at that point.
Yet, I still keep playing every other night and twice on Sundays. I go back to see if I could improve and to beat my opponents senseless. Sometimes a great night most of the time I suffer more losses than I expect too. |

My best friend from high-school, didn't like Super Mario World (or Mario 64!). Mainly because he loved Super Mario Bros 3 from the Allstars collection. (I could never work out why though). Likewise, I can see people not liking Rpg combat. I'd much prefer things like Final Fantasy / Dragon Quest etc if they had fewer battles. Super Mario World / Super Mario Bros 3 are often tied for best 'platform' game ever.
I'm all for the expressing of dislike for popular things when you can back it up with a reason why (of course sometimes this is a totally subjective and hard-to-pin down). |
