watch this clip, wherein David Jaffe:
-admits that his PSP game sucked which is why it was canned
-calls EGM "a bunch of fucks"
-tells someone to "go fuck yourself in the grotto because ain't no one else gonna fuck you there"
-admits that he's a "B-level game designer" and that God of War's combat is inferior to Devil May Cry
-calls out the gaming age forums
-all this and more!
I'm not sure there's much to discuss here but it's entertaining as all hell. _________________ where were you when nana komatsu got a wii? |

I like when the Sony marketing guy says something about GoW 3 culminating in a "multiplatform BattleRAMA!" and and Jaffe says "Man fuck you, I don't even know what you just said!" all new levels of respect for this guy.
I wonder what they cut out. |

I wonder if someday game designers in the American press will be able to give candid interviews about their games without having a marketing guy standing next to them telling them what they can't mention. _________________ Mr. Mechanical |

Best parts: Jaffe mistakenly calling Neogaf Gamefaqs, and then pretending he created Shadow of the Colossus.
Still, uhhh, yeah. I thought God of War was shit and Jaffe, in interviews, sounded like a hack that was media-savvy enough to try and trick people into thinking he was an "important" designer. This interview, however, makes me like him. He can do whatever he wants now, and even if it sucks I won't give him shit. |

He was the designer of all the other games he mentioned though, that I recall: God of War, Twisted Metal, and Warhawk were most definitely his games. |

Wait, I know what's up. Santa Monica studios were the ones that brought SotC over from Japan. Jaffe works for SMS. It's kind of a stretch but the guy was drunk at the time so I'll give it to him. _________________ Mr. Mechanical |

Seems more like he was begging NeoGAF to accept him, not calling them out.
Anyways, I still don't have any gained respect for the guy. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

What reason do you have to have no respect for him?
Anyway, he wasn't referring to Warhawk as a game he had anything to do with (he didn't), he was referring to the "we" as the Sony "we," since that's who he works for, and since the Playstation 3 was the focus of most of the questions.
To me this reaffirms what I've always thought of Jaffee. He's a guy who wants to make fun games and is lucky enough to be working for a company that gives him the freedom to do so. What's not to respect about that?

I just wish the interviewer would have shut up about God of War 3 after the first question.
"So how awesome is GoW3 going to be?"
"I haven't really started yet?"
"How will GoW3 take advantage of the PS3?"
"I don't know?" _________________

Warhawk was an awesome looking game. Awesomest looking flying game 'til Starfox 64... and it played well two. Terrible cut scenes, but watching those swarms of missles made it worth it. |

I somehow doubt he really is drunk. It's always easy for journalists to claim their interviewee is drunk or high when they're basically telling them to fuck off. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

Well, that's what I was saying. He still is a little fun and lighthearted despite, you know, saying dirty words and cursing. I also appreciate how he calls out that other dude for pimping GoW3. I appreciate that a lot. Almost as much as talking about how bad his PSP game was. _________________ Wii #: 8749 9109 9732 3653

No. Will Wright's the worst about it. He's always got his publicist hovering over his shoulder, and when you ask him for interviews (or sometimes just simple questions) he refers you to her. It's understandable, really, but it's annoying.

I admit to not playing close attention to the whole clip, but what creative process are you thinking of? Where talks about sitting down with a bunch of books for research material, and a notebook? Or are you talking about the final result? |

I will come right out and say it: I seriously enjoyed God of War. I beat the game on every difficulty setting and then did the hardest a few times more just for kicks. It is not a deep game, nor is it life/history-altering in it's scope. But damn, is it ever fun. I think the main point was the fact that the controls were just right for me - I felt that I was in control of those two blades spinning maniacally about the room. And that is impressive.
Where games like Onimusha don't even let you jump, I felt the control system was perfect in GoW - there weren't ten million button combinations to remember (which, I know, some people derive pleasure from memorizing. I am not one of those people.) and, as hard as it is to say, it looked good doing it.
Although, I still wish I could have skipped the cut-scenes.
I also remember having a lot of fun with Twisted Metal: Black. It came with my first PS2 and, while I guess it was not the most fleshed out game, the coop/the multiplayer/the randomness of it all was just.... fun.
I guess that is how I would label David Jaffe. He is not reinventing the industry or giving us a whole new look on the medium - he is merely (!!!) making games for gamers to have fun with. Which is probably much harder than we give him credit for.
All this clip shows is that a) he does have a personality beyond the marketing fools who promote his games, b) he cares about his games and what people think about them and c) he has a slightly annoying voice. _________________ PSN: Twitch_City ||| Wii: 8083 5371 5767 6700

I didn't try very hard, but didn't get into God of War, partially because of the mechanic of it... I never got over the feeling of "am I doing this right, or just button mashing? Should I be learning better fighting technique, and will the game punish me for not progressing beyond my button mashing ways later?" |

I think you don't really get to feel GoW until you make it to the hardest difficulty settings. Sure, you can button mash through the easier settings without any problems - and the game wouldn't punish you for doing so.
But, playing on the hardest setting almost forces you to "get" the controls... making the game almost feel like a coordinated dance. A slaughter dance, if you will. There aren't too many combinations to remember so it is all about figuring out where each is more efficient.
I know some reviews say that you can just go through the whole game using one combo ad infinitum but really. Where is the fun in that?
Mr. Mechanical: Sounds good, man. Yeah, I can't wait for GoW 2. Although... I guess I can considering I am knee-deep in Wii at the moment. _________________ PSN: Twitch_City ||| Wii: 8083 5371 5767 6700

Huh. I played through Mario 64, barely started God of War... but isn't God of War pretty linear? Do each challenge, go to the next one? As opposed to Mario "do some challenges, don't sweat doing every little thing, do things in any order, and maybe even accidentally" |
