if we had ever gotten the rest of that filled out with descriptions I was all for carting it around the internet in an entirely straight-faced manner.
none of us saved it because we thought it was invincible |

I am of the opinion that the Top 100 list was the greatest thing the IC forums ever created. That whole damn thing, and everything and one involved in its creation was so fucking genius it simply had to die, lest we live under its burden for the rest of our posting days. |

Guys I saw the mod forum on one of my sneaking missions. I had just arrived on the fabled Shadow Weeaboo Island (JAPAN), and defeated my old nemesis the Cyborg Roman. I found a hip young foreigner skipping class inside a closet listening to Rock and Roll and Ska and Punk. I asked him what the hell was going on (what with the cyborgs and such), and we successfully made it back to his workstation, where I saw the gaping innards of Forum Gear.
FORUM GEAR?!
My new friend "RUD13CON" explained: an icyclam-equipped forum capable of detonating solo. I couldn't believe it. Wasn't icyclam banned after the non-proliferation treaty all those years ago?! Yet apparently he was on this very island. According to RUD13CON, I had to prevent the terrolists from finding this icyclam before he could be inserted into Forum Gear and bring disaster to the world. I asked him where he got this info from, and he told me...
"I helped CREATE Forum Gear!!"
THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES ON ANOTHER FORUM MAYBE |

so it's selectbutton now? ok.
this is appropriate. think about it:
it's neither abstract like A or X or O or 3 or 7, nor to-the-point like start or up or turbo, but ambiguously in-between. -> fits!
it's usually the least accessible button on a pad. -> fits!
occasionally games that actually require more buttons than are on the pad use the select button in-game causing the player massive death & confusion. -> fits!
it symbolises going about things in a round-about way. remember the early nes days when selecting was unidirectional? the selectbutton often has people going in circles. -> fits!
also: metroid 2. |

I was informed by Tim tonight that it is Selectbutton. I can deal with that!
I also had a very long talk with him, and had some things cleared up. There will be a slightly different ruddiger/ruddles/rud13/huaghaluaghaghl/ on this new forum. _________________

oh, also on a more serious note: the domain is still pending which is why I haven't moved forward yet. Barring any unforeseen difficulties I intend to get as much work done as possible over the weekend and launch at least the bare bones forum page and front page on Monday. Can't make any promises of course. Also, still no word on when we will get the forum backups up and running but I will keep you guys updated on that front too. _________________ where were you when nana komatsu got a wii? |

Do we have the forum backups?
Are they in the form of a standard phpBB database dump?
You essentially just need to be running the same blend of SQL database server on the new site (otherwise the dump might need conversion) and a way to load it all into the new SQL server. Shell access works best for this imo. Some hosting providers lock the ability to do that and you have to e-mail support and make them dump it in for you. Messy.
Then you just have to go in and change all references to "insertcredit" to "selectbutton" and pray. |

On a related note, yeah, selectbutton is fine in the end, really. The name doesn't matter THAT much. I just flamed it because you told me to flame the ones I didn't like as much, so I did. ANYWAY! I look forward to having our neo-IC-SB-thingie so we can stop shitting up the TGQ forums. |

As has been discussed in other threads, brandon hasn't agreed to give the actual forums over because of privacy concerns. Nana Komatsu has proposed an excellent solution to this which will allow for us to have a basically complete, non-interactive thread archive, which is about the best we can hope for at this point. Brandon hasn't replied to my email yet, so yeah. We're still waiting. I will fight tooth and nail to get those archives though. _________________ where were you when nana komatsu got a wii? |

That really sort of sucks.
Moreso than having the thread archives available the single most important factor to getting as many of the users who were on the old forums onto these new ones imo would be having all the user accounts intact and operational. The simple act of having to re-register turns a lot of people away in a lethargic sort of "meh, why bother" way, with us being the lazy internet bums we are.
The thread archive has the value of keeping many of the great discussions we had alive, but in the end it's the user database that will ensure that the new forum has life right from the outset.
What sort of privacy concerns are we talking about exactly here? |

Basically transferring thousands of people's registration information (email, username, pass, location, etc etc) to an entirely new entity. It's the sort of thing which could end up being a big problem for brandon. However I am not particularly concerned because the last time the forums got hacked everyone had to reregister and it was not a problem. I really do believe that this is a very simple "if you build it they will come" situation. My bigger concerns are with the long-term well-being of the site, which I am taking steps to ensure. _________________ where were you when nana komatsu got a wii? |

Can you honestly tell me that every regular poster to the IC forums in its various iterations has bothered to re-register when the forums did come back up after the various crashes/hacks they have suffered?
A good portion of the users WILL re-register, yes, but a good number of people will also decide not to bother with it and as a result of that the forums do take on a different flavour altogether. brandon may have hated pre-hack IC and post-hack IC equally, but when it comes down to it they were different places in subtle ways, in part because of the users that never came back.

Passwords in phpbb databases are MD5 hashed, so I'd imagine the main concern is that whoever has access to the database can read private messages. I can't think of anything else, really.
And maybe at some point IC promised not to give your email address to anybody? _________________

I should have quoted the other part of your claim that the archive matters less because everyone seems to think the archive is the most important thing, which seems kind of silly but ok.
edit: but I do think that re-registering is not going to be a big deal for anyone.
