I was away from the internet for a little while, and this is all pretty confusing.

Do I need to read this whole thread?

Fuck... that took a long time to read.

It would be fucking crazy if the most rational place of discussion I'd ever seen on the internet managed to be totally fucked up and destroyed in less than a day. It really pisses me off that I missed it since I just have to rely on everyone else to find out WHAT REALLY HAPPENED (tm). But I think most people here are above outright lying so I'll assume I got the gist of it.

A few things. First, Hot Stott Bot is my favorite person on Earth right now. So is everyone else who, as some one here put it, "called a spade a spade" and offered clarity about what the fuck happened.

Insert Credit is one of the greatest game sites on the internet, and it is fitting that it served as the birthplace of the most civil and intelligent forum on gaming I've ever encountered. I really like Tim Rogers, Brandon and the rest of the IC crew. In fact, remember that "SuperMan Returns the Videogame?" post exodus started? I took off a lunch break and chance to see my girlfriend and flirted with getting fired to draw a fucking picture for that just because I wanted to see it on the main page of InsertCredit.com.

What's really depressing is that, after carefully reading over all of this, as well as the one thread in Large Prime Numbers that alerted me to this threads existance (this thread needs a better name), I really can't see how anyone could exonerate the staff of IC. I mean, unless they were fucking retarded and none of us knew about it until today. Given how much I respect them, I just can't see this as some accident (aside from the whole child porn thing at the end).

Its also depressing because I don't like this idea that Brandon didn't like the forums. Maybe I didn't check the forums as much as the rest of you, but IC never really played host to large fights or flame wars. People bickered but that was it, and everyone usually stayed calm and civil through everything so nothing ever escalated or got out of hand. I really can't help but think IcyClam was soley responsible for whatever chaos or bullshit occured towards the end of it, just because the mood of the forums in general was always so nice and IcyClam (who I don't know from Adam) seems like a real penis wrinkle in the few posts he's added to this thread.

But again, what wasn't to like about the forums? Were our posts not good enough? Where my posts so shitty that they may have contributed to Brandon's disdain, so that when he went out to the backyard of his site, to what should have been his garden, he saw only common trash? I mean I just don't fucking get it. The guy seems cool but all this talk of how much he hated the forums quickly makes me feel like he hated all of the people that posted there, which hurts a bit. Everyone was posting there because they liked or loved Insert Credit, even though the site almost never added new features anymore. So why did you let the bad man hurt us Brandon? Can we ever come back home? If not, well you jerks just destroyed my ability to believe in heroes!

Anyway, I feel really depressed about IC going away. It was the only forum on the internet I liked (aside from one that I run, but that doesn't count), and really it was almost the only place I had to discuss games with really hardcore gamers, being that all of my friends are either not hard core or have long since moved away.

I think we should probably wait until starting some Neo IC forums. Hopefully Brandon will take pity on us and reinstantiate the old IC. If he doesn't, thats okay, because it is his site and he should be able to tell all of us to go fuck off or something if he wants, and delete all of those shitty posts we wrote. But if we do must migrate, lets talk about it for awhile and do this shit right. So far there seem to be like five people offering to host some new version of the IC forums (shit, I was planning to until about page 2). Lets figure out where we're going and go there all at once, and make the place good so it attracts new blood, and doesn't eventually lose momentum and rot like some depressing tome like every other stand alone forum web page.

I've a couple things to say:

James wrote:
stuff about aderack and tim[

Yeah, that's one of the things that disturbed me the most about this whole situation. Tim and aderack most certainly had mega influence in this planned destruction of the forums. They acted like complete and total children--these are people I respect, and it sort of saddens me to see this happen. I mean, did you know that minutes before the icy take over, aderack had Captain EO temp banned for not liking Peter Jackson? I mean, what the fuck? When I first joined the forums, tim, aderack and brandon were the top three posters, and I stuck around because I enjoyed conversing with them. Now all three of them want us all to die. Maybe I'm just more susceptible to growing attached to things, but I've seen no real Great Injustice over the last four years that would lead me to willfully sabotage a vibrant community. It all points to the three of them simply not being able to handle that they were not the focal point of the forums. That is fucking sad, and I wish at least one of them had seriously voiced these thoughts to me at some point in time.

That said, to all those that are a little bewildered or miffed that Brandon apparently doesn't like them: from what I know of the guy, he bears none of us any ill will. He is simply predisposed to becoming disillusioned with things that grow too big for their britches.

As for where we're going to go, lets just sit around and see what happens first. I know internisus was interested in trying to start something up, too. Something tells me we're going to end up splintered and diminished Sad

My forums are up and running. Have been for a while. I know some of you (OK, all of you) probably think I'm an asshole and that I couldn't manage a community of like-minded folks to save my life, but I actually kind of know what I'm doing here!

I don't want to disrupt any rebuilding plans.

Actually, fuck it. If the forums do come back, everyone is just gonna go back there anyway.

Have fun.

Tim, if Brandon had gone ahead with the original plan of letting us know he was killing the forums ahead of time, giving us the chance to keep all the old posts and relocating, and then moving to an entirely blog format, I think things would have been fine. Many people would still be upset, but it wouldn't have provoked the violent anger that the way things were done did.

Installing icyclam as a moderator though. Fuck. I just don't know how Brandon couldn't have seen this coming. Icyclam is hated with a passion, and every single action during his brief time in charge validated our feelings of him. We hated him, and how he acted made us hate him more. He could have acted differently. He could have not locked threads. He could have not banned people. He could have not been condescending. But no. He acted exactly how icyclam always does, and the reason everybody despises him.

Hello timbilly.

The whole "give the forums to someone else, relocate them, and let the community pay for them" would have been a great idea if Brandon was really so hung up about it. The thought entered my mind the other day, when the forums were busy being porned up and I was busy doing other things with other people elsewhere. That would have been a reasonable idea. I mean, I think it a little odd that Brandon is so concerned with how the forums turned out; they weren't terrible, and I don't think he is naive enough to believe a community ought to stay the same for years and years and years. But it is emminetely reasonable to not want to pay for a forum you don't post on, so I don't think a single person would've complained about that solution.

About the icy stuff...well, I don't know what you're talking about, to be honest. Icy came and was civil for a while, then he became a psychopath. Those are generally the people you get rid of, because they are a drain on the community. He stayed around for a long time because I didn't like the idea of banning people, and the forums are and always were pretty dead set against active moderation. But he deserved to be banned. A year and a half later, pretty much everyone seems to agree on that. I haven't seen a single person besides you say that icy's original banning was a bad idea. It's just...no. Remember when you flipped out at gameformsr, way back when? And you left because, hell, it was gameforms and that shit was clearly not working out for you, anymore? Well, just pretend you had stayed there for another six months, doing the shit you were doing. Could you honestly say you wouldn't have deserved to have been banned? Yeah, maybe you didn't like the people or the site or thought the things they said were stupid; still, if you think those things and you stay at a place anyway and you shit all over everyone, you're going to be banned. The forums could be about trading snuff films and posting videos of you killing cats; that would be a terrible forum, but if you came into and started shit for six months, they'd ban you and you'd be like "yeah, I should've been banned."

That's just how things work.

To say that guy--the guy that most everyone agrees was a negative influence on the entire forums--was qualified to come in and boss us all around after a year and a half of being banned, well, that's just indicitive of a complete and total lack of respect, right off the bat. To think these people would end up listening to you after that...well, it strikes me as moronic on about every possible level. If you want to do anything with a community other than delete it or auction it off, then you'd better bother to show a willingness to understand and respect it. That didn't happen.

edit: and don't call me a "furious, jaded asshole" or say that my threads "frightened you on many, many levels." I do some things wrong, sometimes, but it ought to be pretty clear by now that I at least only did/do them to try and help the forums. All things considered, I think my way ended up a little better than the "forum armageddon" way has.

Okay, so I thought about this a bit...

I'm thinking the best thing to do right now is to come up with a plan for moving the IC forums to a new site, with a slightly different name -- kind of neogaf-style.

I think the easiest way to handle this, while demosntrating some good will from the IC staff, would be to reopen the old forums, but lock everything (at least temporarily), and then make a new subforum specifically to discuss the move.

I think we can move the forums such that they stay identical in every way, but with a new name (I like "insert coins" since we can still use "IC" as the abbreviation!), and with a plan for new management/government/bandwidth, that won't disrupt the community, and the IC staff won't have to deal with them if they don't want to.

I think the transition can be done in several phases, and even after the transition, a strong effort should be made to keep ties to Insert Credit. They should link each other prominently with a very short description of the history, etc. etc.

Essentially, the tie should be as strong as it is now.

Then, in the final phase of transition, new Insert Credit forums can be made with much stricter moderation (icyclam would probably work out fine for the admin, even), some stylistic changes to differentiate them from the old forums, and overall made much closer to the main site.

Proposition made!

The first step would be restoring a backup, locking everything, getting everyone on board, and then setting up a new subform to discuss the transition. Any details beyond this can be worked out in that subforum.

There's no risk to this either... if the discussion doesn't work out, you can always just go back to taking the forums offline again and we won't be any more fucked than we are right now!

(Reopening just Axe in a few days so people have a place to put their spamfest outside of TGQ while discussing the move... would also not be a bad idea, but maybe it's just because I miss Axe?)

hey so i had this idea while watching people play kelly slater's pro surfer. basically if you watch that game long enough (which is actually kind of really nice-looking) you will start to notice the various magical powers of kelly slater:

a: he is followed by a magical wave
b: his board allows him to do anything he wants on water, including doing a darkslide grind on top of the FUCKING BARREL of the wave and toadally just kickflipping that shit
c: kelly slater doesn't give a shit about ruining someone's day

so basically i had this idea about expanding kelly slater's pro surfer into a mission-based sandboxy type game. I mean, it's basically the way it's already set up, except without a narrative. the main way i've seen it played is without a time limit, just doing tricks on a wave until you get knocked over. then the wave reappears for kelly and he rides it into the sunset. it's kind of magical and triumphant how the wave just comes out of nowhere and picks him up.

basically, you would use the two analog sticks to control kelly slater and his magical wave. you'd mostly move around the ocean by turning the wave in whatever direction you want to go, then let kelly surf along it until you get wherever you want. you'd receive missions at first from other surfers gtathps style, who'd be like "yah bro fucken swipe that windsurfer bitches ride dogg" and you'd go up to him, merge your wave with the windsurfer's so that it became one huge wave and then just come down on him so hard.

it would be shit like that, small-time stuff, just building up your reputation as the biggest asshole on the beach. as you progressed your wave would become more powerful as well, eventually becoming able to spend short amounts of time on land (mission: totally fuck up this dude's house. solution: ride your wave into his house, then just fucking wallride all over his bedroom and spray water everywhere. also you must stall on his chandelier). eventually your missions would become more and more high profile and your equipment would change as well, as you would start carrying a gun around. nothing too fancy, just a pistol (or maybe a harpoon pistol to keep with the aquatic theme). then you'd have to like shoot jaws because even though he was eating other surfers and making surfing sweeter for you that way (surfers hate other surfers man) he'd sometimes just come and kill you all FreeSki style, just sneak up on you and kill you. randomly. didn't matter where you were, pipeline, cuba, antarctica, motherfucker would always be hating on your sweet tricks. so you'd kill that asshole with your gun.

at this point you could do underwater missions too because kelly slater can definitely breathe underwater and can send his wave in to do the dirty work that his gun can't. you'd have to kill nessie and ursula from the little mermaid and drown everyone in atlantis.

anyways then because you killed jaws you'd totally get hired by the c.i.a. or whatever to do missions for them. they'd train you in stealth so that you could sneak up behind foreign national surfers and break their necks. there would be an escort mission of a supertanker because goddamnit there has to be an escort mission. there would be a sneaking mission in which you took pictures of secret north korean weapons--and you would hide inside the barrel of the wave the whole time or risk capture.

in the final mission north korea launches its dirty bomb taepodongs against northern california and you have to start at pearl harbor. then you form your wave into a barrel and send it into the air, surfing the inside of the barrel which is in the air. i can draw a picture if you don't get it but just think of the most awesome thing possible and you're basically there. you have to catch the taepodongs in your barrel so that they spin off course (midway island and the philippines are renderered uninhabitable but it's no biggie), then aim the barrel at kim jong-il and shoot out of it at mach speed, impaling him on your board.

the last shot in the game shows the memorial they build in your honor at washington d.c. (which has a kind of weird modernist statue of kelly slater and the wave) and your eternal fountain. then the game ends and the credits roll and there's some last-minute dialogue just like in metal gear except that you see kelly slater (actually you can't tell it's him but that's definitely his phone you know he has a phone like that) and he's talking with lyndon johnson or whoever does the voice for abe lincoln on ken burns documentaries and he learns that kim jong-il was giving him orders all along or something.

you know you'd buy that.

Plans for the new forums:

I will make a post in the axe called "hi winker" as a countdown for the return of winker. He may or may not post in it, but instead make a thread called "hi agnes" just to be mean.

I will kirby dance with glitch in the Axe.

I know! I still think it would be really great if the new forums and the IC site could agree on some sort of relationship. I mean, linking each other in a prominent way with an explanation that one is a not-necessarily-videogame-centric culture that grew out of the other, etc. etc. would be a great way to increase participation on both without having to create much of a real assocation between the two.

I think it would be nice!

But, well, that's IC's decision... and not something people should feel bitter about if they decide against it, I suppose.

hey guys!

the neo ic will be ic (+icyclam)!

you must simply decide whether or not you wish to be a part of it.

are video games jocular, or sincere?

perhaps both?

i'm with joe, i think! to the end!*

Another IC refugee chiming in. If you don't really recognize me, it's cause I didn't post much and uh never got into disagreements with anyone, but I'd been faithfully lurking on the forums for years before I registered as hazylium last year, stopped posting when I got all busy with school and then started a new account under this name this year.

I was actually watching the action go down up to a few hours before the forums exploded and while I had only an inkling of an idea who the heck icyclam was, I had half a mind to post an angry response on his READ.ME thread but I decided to wait until things cooled down a bit, or at least until I did. Checked on the forums a few hours later and the whole thing was 404-ed into oblivion. . .

Of course, I knew where to go to find out what'd happened. Nice to see all the usual suspects assembled here. Smile You can destroy the forums, but you can't get destroy the community eh?

Guess I'll be seeing y'all on the new forums.

Oh and whoever chose the Twinsen's Adventure banner for this site- I totally <3 you.

Anyone on this forum can beat me at Third Strike.

I like to play as Makoto though. I mean, if it helps.

who can say now? and like it or not I feel that most of the forum was ousted for being unwanted riff-raff, so I'm not sure what the point would be.

I don't think I'd be allowed to register at the Neo Insert Credit. I don't import enough (or, erm, any) obscure games from Japan for consoles I don't own.

Being drunk somehow gives Ken's standing HK more range and priority.

I've seen this in action, it's a wonder to behold.

I should take a shower now, but I am not.

Also, I like seeing how things are progressing, forumwise. Yep.

Wilkes, I did not bring her because I wanted to make love with her, okay? However, we did dance crazy that night. I brought her because she was a friend -- well more like an acquaintance. If I was just bringing a regular friend then why not bring a dudefriend? Because boys are gross!

That trailing ellipses, I do not know how to interpret it!

Wilkes, I think your 1000th post is dedicated to Jeff.

HSB you are missing my point how did you miss my point. HSB you have a fear of commitment yet you make with coitus any ol' damn way. to say your name would bring you closer to the community, yet you are convinced to stay many arms lengths away. that is sad.

Dancing is great and I did dedicate that post to Jeff's MA Hipster avatars I already miss.
