Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team played really well on the floor. People seemed REALLY into it. Also if you read the thing above the instructions it says that a GBA and DS game will be coming out.

Yeah, I played the Japanese version and while I'd probably get it and LOVE the chance to play it in English, its no Shiren or Torneko. I think they did a very clever job of combining both the Mysterious Dungeon and Pokemon systems but I'm not a real big fan of the Pokemon system and it didn't blend that great with the big 99 level end dungeons. I think Probably the big difference between the Pokemon and Mysterious Dungeon systems is that the Pokemon system is primarily based on the pokemons' inherent skills whereas the Mysterious Dungeon games have often been a lot more about clever use of found items.

the pokemon game looks interesting in that it seems to be party-based.

i'm going to be soliciting people for inclusion in the shiren feature for issue 6 soon. be on your guard!

Yeah, I guess. Most of the game is YOU (the pokemon you become based on how you answer the random set of questions they throw at you) and your partner with occassional guest stars (upto 4 in the party total). Once you beat the game, however, you are given complete freedom to form a team with any of your recruited pals (i.e. you no longer HAVE to include you main guy and partner) and there is a certain amount of fun trying to think of just the right team for the job (like picking a group of guys that works against the weaknesses of the baddies in the dungeon you're heading into). You can only directly control one pokemon at a time (until you beat the game, its always your starter pokemon) but for the folk you aren't directly controlling you can give many parameters like "aggressively atttack anybody on site", "hang back behind me", or even, "only attack folk that are extra susceptible to your attack type".

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is way too easy...

Does it ever become challenging, or do I have to like complete the game first or what?

Also, I named my sidekick Shiren and my team is named Fushigi!

I've died a few times so far. Once when I wasn't keeping an eye on my HP and another time when I got put to sleep and hacked to death in a corridor. I think the only problems you're going to run into early will be when you go into a dungeon with Pokemon that are incompatible with the types in the dungeon.

You also have to realize that you've been playing basically the same game for so long lately that you're probably pretty good at it. This is a kids version of that game that will probably take some time to actually get difficult. I'd be surprised if it wasn't difficult by the time you got to the "end."

Well, I have only done the 3 quests that you have to do and about 3 side missions. But by this point at least Torneko PS1 was slightly more challenging. Also, I'm really no good at Shiren.

The difficulty does pickup as you get further in but, yeah, other than maybe the End Dungeons, this seems one of the easier Mysterious Dungeon games I've played so far.

Hopefully this will be just the "gateway drug" to get stuff like the upcoming Shiren DS ported over, eh?

Yeah, it does get more dificult as you move on but never too nasty, even most of the boss battles are no biggy (often pretty random, I guess as it all depends on who they decide to target and with which move). What I love, however, is at no point (at least as I remember playing thorugh the Japanese version) is there a "find the ONE trick to get past this particular dungeon or baddy". You're free to develop your own cool combo of team mates and then which specific movesets you want them to use to find your own cool tricks.

I just died again. They sent me into a dungeon with a Lv. 1 monster who I had to escort to the top floor of the dungeon and he got killed.

Either I REALLY suck at this game, or the people calling the game easy haven't played very far into it.

Or a combination of the two! Also, I told you to play more Shiren, but nooooo, you never listen.

Escort missions are probably among the trickiest of the mission types. Later you'll be expected to take some of these little 1st level doofi as far as the 80+ level! The key is taking it easy and trying to ensure nothing sneaks up on you while escorting your ward. Might be good to have partner and other teammate (if you have one) on more aggressive settings so nobody will be getting in between you and your escortee (so it will be much easier to switch places in a hurry when you need to).

Only a painful side effect of the story, get through it and you have a fun little game at the end.

I personally see the whole story as nothing more than an elaborate tutorial, the real game begins after "the credits roll".

I haven't played a Pokémon game since Blue. I am so completely lost with all these new Pokémon, it almost makes me not want to play. I guess I'll just have to tough it out, but I have the original roster basically memorized, and seeing unfamiliar faces makes me pretty sad.

You're crazy for thinking it's better, but if you like it so much, maybe you can help me out. I died in the middle of a dungeon and I need someone to rescue me! My password is:

?C?NR ?RF(Male)!??? 95??M
?W??? ?PH(Male)H?-? ?MYJ?
??X?X PM??R??? J2TF?

When you rescue me give me the password and I'll be able to keep my shit! Thanks! (If anyone else wants to rescue me that's cool too). You've got until Sun Morning Wink

I picked it up Pokemon Mystery Dungeon too! I'm a Mudkip and my partner is a saucy Pikachu named Sepia.

I'm kind of disappointed at how easy it is but I look forward to playing this game-after-the-game that I hear about. Still, the game is pretty darn cute. I cannot resist playing whenever I have a spare hour or two! (Though I tend to fall asleep in the middle of dungeons. Thank goodness for quicksave.)

Yeah, Persona, don't worry too much, the game gets not so easy after a while.

But here is what I really popped in for: move linking. This is pretty genius! It really is an amazing addition to Pokemon and makes for some really cool tactics. I just started to dive into it a little last night. Chunsoft did a pretty damn good job with this.

hmm.. this game it pretty good. It's not as good as shiren though, but its got alot of good things going for it.

its been said before, but i'll say it again. this game lacks the whole "Its out to get you" thing. its what made shiren so appealing to me. I cannot resist the immense satisfaction i feel after one-upping the game as it tries but fails to screw me over due to my cleverness. This is especially true when the game* gets pissed off and puts you in areas where you are almost destined to fail. i havent seen any of those things yet. maybe this 'ultimate dungeon' place has what i'm looking for.

i feel that it also lacks a bit of variety. especially item-wise. in shiren you had alot of stuff to work with that each had its own special effect. some of those effects are even unknown to you until you try them out. it made things alot more mysterious and kept things interesting. i also miss the traps. They kept me on my toes so i wouldn't be speed walking everywhere. the 'moves' and thier subsequent linking adds some fun but not enough to make up for it.

i shouldn't be saying bad things about it yet. ignore these comments for now, if you want.

still though, i find it addicting though. its nice enough to let 'not-so-hardcore' players get into it. plus, its portable. ITS PORTABLE!

this is making me excited for that DS shiren game, though. my frothing demand for it has increased ten-fold.

-----
* Game - Well. i dont know if calling the game's reactions like this is okay. i guess the best term for it would be the game's "dungeon master algorithm" or something like that.

In a couple of the post win dungeons you'll get the ol' all of the game's items are possible, traps, and you've got to fight your way through from level 1. I liked those dungeons best in the Japanese version and am really looking forward to that point in this English version. That being said, I think I really preferred Torneko and Shiren's bigger emphasis on proper item management. I think by the end there actually may be as many items as there were in Shiren but they're always known (no discovering if good or bad) and almost never as crucial as simply using the right Pokemon move for the situation (almost as if they never are much more than basic support, very rare that you'll go all "Yes, I found this particular rare item just in time!").

Wow. Ok, I just "finished" Pokemon MD.

I must say that this seems like it is pretty much where the game starts. Just looking around and all the new options and ... well, all that stuff. There is a metric-ton of stuff left to do. I'm, like, pretty excited!

An A mission is a 25 level escort into the main game's final dungeon. Ohh!

I just evolved Bulbasaur and quit. Tomorrow I'll probably do some standard rescue missions, because geeeeez.

So, uh. Magma Caverns. I need help.

TP?N89R+(male)(female)(female)??F?6?(female)
?W????533W?!?988J?
??T?(female)7JM?-(male)??SMRK...

I don't know how to make the ... suspended or what that character is supposed to be.

I don't really have any particularly valuable items. I just have a sandshrew with me and sandshrew is my favorite Pokémon. He'd be easy to get again and all, but ehhh. I'd appreciate a rescue.

Yeah, I pretty much did the exact same thing. I was only going to be awake for another hour and just decided to turn it off rather than attempt to figure out what I wanted to do. Also, how do you control your non-main character? Like I don't want to evolve my Psyduck, but I do want to evolve Shiren the Charmander.

About what level were you at when you finished the game? I was at around 32.

Give me like.... 5 hours or so. I will be getting home around 3pm central time (or anyone else is open to try).

Still in the 20s, I think. I don't remember and I can't check. On my last level I learned Psychup, so around there. I too am using Psyduck and the scream+scratch combination so utterly destroyed all of the final bossess that it was kind of disappointing.

To control your charmander, go into the Team menu while you're in the town, select whoever you want out of the party, and select "standby." I think you can't do that to the party leader, so you'll have to standby charmander, then go see him in his home and make him the leader there. I don't think there are any shortcuts, but I wish there were.

It's funny, everyone I have saved so far (you were the third) they all died in monster houses. I know because that's what they throw at the rescuer... so yeah, I just kind of expect a monster house at the end of rescuing people now.

Ok, so since it was taking up a lot of the space of the other thread I split off the Pokemon MD posts into their own thread. Hope that it is still coherent for anyone who was following.

If I had known I would've warned you.

Not that it's a particularly difficult monster house, mind. The attacks were only taking off 1-2 HP and everything was just peachy, but then one monster used an attack that greatly lowered my SP defence--twice--then I took one SP attack too many. And there was a petrify orb a few steps away. I just didn't want to risk poor Sandshrew's life.

As if you needed Pokemon to confirm that.

Uh, OK, so I kicked my own ass. I wouldn't send out a code, but I can't say that it is very... well, I screwed up. Some weak ass Pokemon cast reflect or something and I attacked it with fury swipes and killed myself twice over ...

Any help would be awesome. I can only get your help if you have beat the game, and then some. (pitfall valley). It is a B rank so it will net you some nice points. Also, I can send pretty much anything as a reward.

I got pulled out of that dungeon. I then went on to take on (with out knowing mind you) a 99 level dungeon. Everything was fine until around the 75th level I ran into about 8 traps per floor then got hit with 3 monster houses in three consecutive floors! I lost all but a timid sandshrew who managed to run away properly when instructed. Needless to say, 70% of my items were "sticky" from traps and un-usable. I had to starve myself to death so that I could use a revive seed in order to get my belly filled. Then the last ten floors were easy, and sparse (unfortunatly).

Oh well, when I hit the 51st floor I knew it was going to be tough, I really wasn't expecting the spanish inquisition 99 floors.

The game just pissed me off. I took Zapdos along to the Stormy Sea and it DENIED me getting the boss at the end as a friend. I think only because I took Zapdos. It did the same thing when I fought Moltres, but with him I couldn't bring anyone along. And it won't let me get Articuno at all.

Ahhh I'm just going to do rescue missions for a while.

Color me confused, getting these bosses as friends often takes MANY tries as there is only a pretty low probability they'll join and then only if its your leader getting in the final blow. Did you get some message to the effect of, "I was going to join but see you already have Zapdos with you." or something?

Also note that you need to have a certain size amount of room open in your party for bosses to join. Like, by having Zapados in your party you probably filled your size limit (I think you need 4 size slots open). I don't know exactly what this means, but I read it in Wes' guide book.

Also, yeah, getting the bosses to join your party is pretty tough. How do you know you would have if you hadn't had Zapados?

Oh. Guess I didn't. I got Zapdos immediately, and I got Moltres as soon as I fought him alone, so I figured it was an instant thing. And as far as the party size goes, I just kinda wish the game would tell me these things.

Your party can't go past a size of 6 and looking at each guy's summary you can see their size. Many uniques are 2-4 size units.

While I appreciate having a boss join you being far from automatic, it kind of annoys me since to unlock some end game dungeons you NEED to recruit all of the Brid Bosses which could mean re-doing some dungeon a zillion times until you get lucky.

Problem is that I don't know the size of the boss I'm trying to get, so I basically have to solo. I don't think I have anyone small enough who's not useless.
