Well I just finished reading damn near all of the first issue, and I've got to tip my hat to all you gents who worked on the fanzine. Seriously, if issue #2 and the rest after it are as straight forward and un-pretentious as I have seen executed here, I'd say finally someone {it this case a few good men} has covered gaming from an angle I've always wanted to see, let alone possibly be a part of.

Mad Props dudes. And while I did begin printing it out, I stopped halfway through. If I could get particulars on how to go about literally subscribing $Money wise, and snag up a hard copy version, someone let me know.

PEACE OUT.

Hm. Reading my Sonic article, I think the editor might've fallen asleep a couple of times. Razz I made sure I spell-checked the whole thing before I handed it in, and I'm noticing typos and odd bits of wording. While I can believe I was dumb enough to mess up on some of the phrasing (I'm not exactly a grammar wizard), one or two of these typos in here I know can't be my fault.

Oh well. My article seems to be, one of the longest in the issue, and reading it out of context (IE - reading it not as a Sonic fan, but as a general reader) I'm finding myself wincing at how dorky I can sound at times; long winded, too. (which is why I say he must've fallen asleep Laughing )

Ah well. I still get my points across (most of the time).

But enough nit-picking on my submission! Rest of the issue is absolutely supurb, so far. I've read up to the Silent Hill 4 portion and I'm liking what I see so far. Gonna dig in and read the rest now.

No shit... huh.

Well, looks like we can sneak in tonight (perhaps) and clean some of that up. Then do a sneaking mission and swap it up. There are a few other edits that will be getting made for the print version as well.

Not only is TGQ the center of NGJ "controversy", but you're linked here too:
http://www.kotaku.com/

Gratz on the instantly notorious status.

and a semi-introduction: as you can see, I'm Karii and I frequented the insertcredit.com forums for awhile there. I see a lot of familiar faces here and I am interested to see where all of this goes, and of course, paticipate in the mess. Smile

Yea, I emailed them . . . it kind of sucks that we got stuck in the middle of the whole NGJ thing as that is not what we were aiming for.

I dare say it's not anyone connected to the NGJ controversy wanted. But any time you stick a mag out it's a case of desires vs perceptions, as always. You learn to deal.

Not only did you get associated with it, word on TEH INTER NETS (tm Toups) is that you are the posterboys of it. Go figure.

As for me, I think that people are annoyed when they have to THINK, and thus the mag OFFENDS. So silly...

Wow. I wouldn't consider myself a NGJ in any way whatsoever. This is obvious once you read my poorly written reviews/articles I host on my own site.

I have to say, I'm kind of amused now. I'm not quite sure if I take this as a step up or a step down, actually.

I hope no one takes this the wrong way, but I don't think any of us should be considered any type of journalists. Except for maybe dhex, I hear he's got a degree in journalism or something.

i crossed over to the dark side a long time ago...

the only real objection i have to gaming journalism as a description is the same problem i have with entertainment journalism as a whole...there's no "public trust" to serve in any real sense, which sort of removes the main societal point of journalism.

i guess warning people away from bad games is, in a sense, serving the "gaming public" but it doesn't pass my sniff test.

that and all the freebies. freebies automatically make you a hoser. speaking as a pr guy, if i were in that industry i would love people who take freebies and call themselves journalists. makes them easier to work with.

Shoot, I'm all about the freebies. I would take them all and still write whatever I wanted to.

I suppose that way the freebies would stop coming though. That's why I'm just the mangaka..

(Maybe I should hit up some manga companies for freebies? Hell, I know Tokyo Pop literally just throws their stuff at people just to get good word. But then again all their work is garbage anyhow...)

So yeah, NGJ/OGJ, who cares?
If we can make something that's high quality and interesting, that's all that matters.

i know what you're saying, but...

it's part of the gulf between entertainment writing, fans and the far more adversarial mentality of traditional journalism. this doesn't mean schenanigans don't pop up, mind you, but taking graft is still a no no (armstrong williams learned this recently).

if anything, game writers and their publications need to be far more adversarial and cynical than they are. maybe i'm off on this because i don't care about gadgets the way i do about content.

yesterday i was buying smokes and saw one of them big game glossies. aggressively virginal, indeed.

What kind od smokes were they?

I just haven't smoked today, and won't be able to for a variety of reasons, so I feel like talking about smoking.

It took me a long time to find a smoke in Amerika that didn't suxxor. In Russia, I smoked Russian Style and Sovietzkie, and the filterless Nostalgia with a big Stalin on the cover with the words "order of the supreme commander: 'not one step back.'" In America, I have acquired a taste for Camel's Turkish Blends. I can't stand regular Camel.

oh man. that's fucking amazing. any pics?

um, i usually smoke kamel reds. no pun intended, ha ha. herm. i find i enjoy the occasional nat sherman regular, on special occasions when suits and cigarette cases are required. the turkish blends are ok. i don't smoke that much anymore so it's more of a pasttime than a heroin maintence scheduling thing. i don't roll my own anymore, but i used to roll drum because it was so cheap and tasted better when fresh.

it seems euros in america will stoop to smoking gauloise if they can find nothing else, though i've found that regular ole marlboro reds seem to a favorite amongst the armenians i know.

EDIT: slut butts? wtf?

I don't know if they still make them any more. But if I'm ever allowed to return to Russia, I'll grab you a pack or two, hell, they only cost about the equivalent of a nickel over there.

Nostalgia actually has two covers. Originally, it was just Lenin with an issue of Pravda next to him. Then they went the more extreme route and affixed Stalin. That still didn't make the cigarettes very popular. If a Russian smokes a cheap cigarette, he's going to smoke White Sea Canal, I think Nostalgia was designed with tourists in mind.

Back when I still had a few packs from Russia, I always received weird looks from New York people when I troubled them for a light and they saw a big grinning Stalin on the cover.

Who here smokes and who here actually likes it?

damn, a smoking topic and I missed it?

I smoke yellow papered Gitanes, unique to France from what I've seen, and one of Gene Reno's preffered blends apparently.

I just like them because when the paper burns, it smells creamy instead of like old newspapers. Oh yeah, and some study proved that they're ever so slightly less fatal than regular smokes.

I don't smoke too often. I smoke a little pot, but I try to avoid cigarettes (at least in excess).

And as for the whole NGJ discussion? Check out this linky here:

http://www.answers.com/new%20game%20journalism

I don't like to generalize, but you decide if TGQ's articles coincide with their description of NGJ. I see many similarities (and hey, there is even a link to this site!).

I like how this new issue is in part a response to the response we got from last issue. We should make some sort of habit of that or something. It would be, like, totally postmodern or something.

That postmodern term is heavily overused, but I'm sure you knew that when you italicized it.

Anyways, I'm looking forward to issue numero 2 and I'm eager to see how my article stacks up with the rest.

Spread the word!

Yes, we should!

Lestrade:
I really liked your artwork. It made my stuff look really unprofessional in comparison. I shall work harder to make my stuff look nicer and one-up you next time! Ho ho ho!

I really do like your style though. The solid lines, the color scheme - it's very stylish. It makes me want to use my tablet more often. Inspiring!

Next time, maybe do the comic in 8x11 proportions. Or -- well. Whoever's doing the layout, do something interesting with the letterboxing, anyway. Like, put a map of the horizontal levels from Kid Icarus across the bottom. Or Rygar's intro level.

Issue one has Contra in it!

But seriously the layout of the comic was all Persona. Because of the hateful nature of Acrobat we decided to leave them letterbox style and not turn them vertically. We still don't know if it is getting printed or not (probably will) but if it was a certain thing I would have turned them vertically. Turning a magazine on its side is not too difficult.

This is a good idea!
In a mock-up that I made for Shaper, I put the comic vertically on a single page with a black background, inverse letter box style. For the final product, I think Shaper made a wise choice for the amount of prep time he had though. It's like digital widescreen!
