I've wanted to contribute to this thread, but I'm too new around here to really make good guesses that are not based on obvious clues. I thought I might instead make a list of games in my favorites list that I'd recommend to people based on the little I know of their tastes, but I imagine that would also prove redundant as I don't know what everyone has played.
ApM wrote: | Wourme: Johnny. |
Very perceptive of you. If I were considering only independent games, it would be somewhere in my list, probably. A Boy and His Blob is a good guess, too. That one's up there.
Whenever I think of trying to choose a favorite game, ever, the first thing that comes to mind is Crystalis. Not sure it would really be the one, but it is certainly a candidate. It also happens to be the current banner as I preview this. How about that?

Sometimes I start thinking that I'm getting tired of video games in general. However, I always realize in the end that I've just been trying the wrong games--ones I think I should like for whatever reason instead of ones that I really do. The game that brought me out of my most recent such episode (about a year ago, I guess), was Beyond Good and Evil.
I keep thinking in the back of my mind that I'll finish DQ7 some day, but it probably won't happen. I got as far as I did riding on my immense fondness for 3 and 4, and a few of the "chapters" weren't bad. I think I'd be able to finish the game if it they'd left out the full motion video, irrational as that may be. |

Since this thread is dying, here's the key to my guesses:
disneyland = Things found in California
dhex = Ends with a Greek numerical prefix
dessgeega = Has two sets of double letters
DonMarco = Contains a trigram in reverse alphabetical order (ONM, PON, UTS)
Lestrade = Words related to "Inspector"
Mr. Mechanical = First and third letters are the same
player 2 = Removing the "2" and the first letter leaves a common English word
ShaperMC = Contains a hairstyle (perm, fade, braid)
Szczepaniak = Begins with four consonants
Tablesaw = Begins with a keyboard key
TOLLMASTER = Ends with a flower _________________ It's the saw of the table! |

Ain't no shame in liking Legend of the Red Dragon, icy.
Myself... I think my favourite game of all time is probably Out Of This World. I love Eric Chahi so much for it that I forgive him completely for Heart of Darkness. I own copies of it for several different platforms (including Heart of the Alien for SegaCD), and once every few months, I sit down and play it to completion. I die a little inside because on any given platform, the timing for the music in the intro is never quite the same as it was the first time I played it.
It is an excellent fucking game. |

Yeah, and I'll drop mine too. I'm putting together an all time faves list, but for now that will have to wait. For now though, my favorite game of all time is...
Metroid Prime
I love it so much that I don't want to write a monologue about it at the moment.

Ok, here's my top 10 list, which I last updated 6 months ago.

2) Star Control 2 (3DO)
3) Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX-2)
4) Castlevania SOTN (PSX)
5) Shadowrun (snes)
6) Katamari Damashii (PS2)
7) Bangai-O (DC)
Panzer Dragoon Saga (sat)
9) Bomberman (saturn)
10) Skygunner (ps2) (this was a recent elevation, forcing Popful Mail to drop to 11) |

a few people were completely right. here are my unranked top three:
tempest 2000, mr. driller a, and crossroads 2.
i'm surprised no one guessed the first one. i'm also surprised so many people guessed mr. driller 2. a > 2. and crossroads 2, of course, is the obligatory c64 game.
so now you know. _________________

I'm like Toups, in that my favorite game changes all the time and is never constant. Right now it's probably Super Mario Bros. 3. Ask me again in a few weeks and it could be something entirely different. |

I have to admit that I actually have a real honest-to-goodness favorite. It's Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It's about the only constant though-- other, lesser favorites come and go, but I've beaten SOTN dozens of times and I never get tired of it.
For whoever predicted Yoshinoya for me-- sorry, never played it. But I'm surprised it didn't get brought to the states. I didn't know until this past spring that there are actually Yoshinoya locations in the US. |

- Gyromite
- Heaven and Earth

- Pirate's Cove
- Solomon's Key (NES)
- Super Mario Bros. 2 (U.S.)

Man, you guys totally forgot about me near the end. -_-
I don't have a favorite game either. I suppose it all depends on what the criteria for a "favorite game" would be. Is it something you always enjoy going back to and replaying or something you really loved the first time through and love to proclaim as your "favorite game?"
If I did have a favorite, it would have to be something by Sonic Team. Those guys and their games defined my life in too many ways for me to really speak of.

I don't hate list threads. In fact, I am a fan of lists.
Ico/Shadow of the Colossus
Earthbound
Rez
Metal Gear Solid 2
Silent Hill 2
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance
Xenogears
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Dragon Quest VIII
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
This list could be slightly different tomorrow or any other day, though. _________________ antitype.livejournal.com | last.fm |

In that case, it simply must be a tie for Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.
Several years ago I probably still would have said Xenogears, though.
Before that, Chrono Trigger... and still before that, Super Mario Bros. 3. _________________ antitype.livejournal.com | last.fm |

Man, I wish I still owned a copy of that game. In 2001, when I was renting a room from an uncle (my step father's brother, technically), I was at work one night while he had a party and a box full of videogames and DVDs disappeared from my room. Many of my most valuable Saturn and SNES games were in that box, including PDS. I have never really gotten over this. _________________ antitype.livejournal.com | last.fm |

That BLOWS. I've only ever had three games stolen and they were B&W Game Boy games. They were Wario Blast (Bomberman with Wario in it), Batman, and Gargoyle's Quest. The only of these games that I've bought back was Gargoyle's Quest. The reason I still remember which games these were is because I am a freak about the games I own. Anyone else like this?

Hey, man, I still find Xenogears spiritually moving, if only in a sort of naïve, nostalgic way.
For the record, I'm 25 and haven't had a girlfriend for about a year and a half. Although there was that one girl last summer, but she wasn't really a girlfriend... _________________ antitype.livejournal.com | last.fm |

That says something as far as I'm concerned. One of these days I'd like to start a Xenogears thread to see what kind of responses I'd get.
It always struck me as the type of game that only a loser fourteen year-old could like. Though your example is compelling and brings about a flurry of questions that I shall not ask here. Rest assured that these questions will come, and when they arrive you must be ready.
In the meantime, what about that girl? _________________

Oh, it's really not a story worth telling here.
I guess I'll say a few words. It was really just another example of the way relationships with women I actually care deeply for (and maybe even come to love) go for me. Friendship blossoms into "something more," I'm beginning to fall head over heels, and then suddenly, with or without warning, the woman decides to leave — sometimes due to circumstances supposedly beyond her control. While she's away, wherever "away" may be, she inevitably falls in love with some other guy. The guy she falls in love with was not even in the picture when she left, but there he is, every time. He is my curse.
This last time, the young woman decided she'd go on a road trip around the country. Not two weeks into her travels, she meets a man in Death Valley — a man from Montréal who is apparently also on a road trip. They fall in love. She now lives with him in Montréal.
OK, so this is actually only the third time this sort of thing has happened, and this wasn't as gut-wrenching as the time a girl I loved more deeply and foolishly than anyone else I'd ever known simply abandoned me to return to an abusive ex-boyfriend, but it's all been enough to make me give up on love for a while.
... So, how 'bout those videogames? _________________ antitype.livejournal.com | last.fm |

This IS a story worth telling. Here at the Gamer's Quarter we only talk about videogames when we have to.
one day I'll start a thread about relationships.
And, well, nothing makes us love more than jealousy. Satisfying sexual relationships are impossible without a good amount of it. In fact, love is probably impossible without jealousy. I can't tell you how many times I've fallen madly in love with girls (or at least thought I had at the time) that didn't struck me as being particularly interesting after one of my friends had begun "walking with her," as we say in Russia. _________________

Of all the emotions I've experienced, I don't think any of them were as intense — nearly unbearable — as the jealousy I felt when "A" went crawling back to the abusive monster. It wasn't quite like grief, anger, or sadness... Only a woman could make me feel something like that. And you're exactly right: nothing makes us love more than jealousy. It's like, you know, a Dostoesvky novel, where love is absolutely illuminated by such cynicism, jealousy, and pain. _________________ antitype.livejournal.com | last.fm |
