outside of status effects in rpgs or what have you, i was wondering if anyone can think of any examples, prominent or otherwise, which relied on sound alone for navigation as part of the plot, a segment of gameplay, etc?
you guys are my internet braintrust of choice for weird questions like these. _________________

I just posted something kind of about this in the D thread... I've heard that the guys that made the D series made an audio only game on the Dreamcast. It's probably only in Japanese.
If I could program better I'd make an audio only game. I've always been fasicinted by blindness for some reason. |

You're pretty screwed in Killer 7 if you can't hear the enemies laugh. _________________ It's the saw of the table! |

I think you mean Enemy Zero- which was on Saturn, and was basically an FPS with invisible enemies that relied on sort of an echolocation system. Still a visual component though.
Probably not what you're looking for, but in terms of voice control Odama requires it, and I feel like there's some PS2 game which is entirely voice activated. An adventure type thing or something? Maybe I'm making this up.
EDIT: yup dess, I'm pretty sure that's it.
2nd EDIT: OPX, you might be right; I just searched Warp's releases and that's the only one that sounded like it fit the bill. So if it was just a pack-in it might not be on most game sites. Related: Why does gamerankings only let you search by publisher and not by developer?

I'm pretty sure it wasn't Enemy Zero, because I remember reading that this audio-only game sold a lot of copies because it came bundled with a demo of D2 (might have been the other way around). I want to say it was called Real Sound Vol. 1 or something like that.
edit- I can't believe nobody's mentioned Seaman or posted a picture of the special behemoth of a controller that was released for the PS2 version of the game (unless I dreamed that part). |

I am finding it hard to imagine a game where the action is expressed purely through sound. I'm mostly just imagining playing 'normal' games with a blank screen though, so that probably doesn't mean much.
I mean, I'd be down for playing an FPS game with no visual output, but you'd need some kind of surround sound system to be able to locate your opponents, and I do most of my gaming with one speaker. Except on my DS, funnily enough.
Zatoichi Quake is a bit of a mouthful, but Z-Quake sounds catchy. |
