today (on the east coast, which is not where he lives) is the birthday of matthew williamson, tgq's very own editor-in-chief Shapermc! here is a thread to share awesome and maybe embarrasing memories about him.
i blame matt for my current addiction to david bowie, because he sent me a bunch of albums while i was doing layout on issue 5 and i ended up listening to them over and over while i wrestled with indesign. particularly he got me hooked on "andy warhol".
there's also one song with a line that sounds like "the return of the thin white duke", and i think the duke is a tampon (returning every month).
happy birthday! _________________

Unfortunately I don't have an embarrassing story to tell, so instead I'll just embellish a story to make it sound embarrassing. Last year when my wife and I were in New Orleans, Shaper was going to meet me at a local arcade, but... HE STOOD ME UP! Shock horror! Granted, I emailed at the last minute to say I wasn't going to be able to make it either, but still! The nerve! And such behavior from a Bowie fan!
So yeah. Happy Birthday Shaper! |

Happy Birthday shaper! I've never had an embarrassing moment with you (seeing as I still exist as an anonymous internet head to most of you), so instead I'll share my favorite non-embarrasing Matt Moment: Once I read a Gamer's Quarter magazine and enjoyed it! _________________

Man, this brings back memories. Sometimes my old man and I would just kick back and talk about Jecht...I mean, Shaper.
But, yeah, again happy birthday shapes. _________________

As I already said someplace outside of this thread, my only encounter with Shapes was when he graciously invited me to an arcade in New Orleans. I could say the the most embarrassing part of that encounter was how intimating my uncle seemed to be when greeting Shaper, but that's just because he was wary of the bad rep that Metairie had(so I'm told) for blacks in the area. But the meeting was short lived so, hopefully, we collectively choose to forget about it.
After he got me better acquainted with his other friends there, Shaper and I chatted a bit about other socially lives while walking to a vending machine that served Bawls energy drinks. He made a crack at how he "enjoyed" working in the service and took a swig of some Bawls. Feeling like I was boring him a little, what with Shapes reaching for an energy drink and all, I asked him about what he was drinking, since I saw a pseudo-advert for it on the G4 network.
"So, how are those?"
The Bawls that is. What a fucking stupid name for anything you drink. Sure, if you don't focus of the ill-minded connotation of it, you won't feel like a nut (sorry) of talking about it. But it's not the sort of tiny voice that you want nagging at you when you're trying to make a reasonable first impression with someone who just got assaulted by your army vet uncle.
Shaper was silent because, hopefully he didn't hear me and didn't think I was trying to be funny, and then he suggested that we play Vurtua-On, which he throughly 'whoop'd mah ass' at. After that he stood up from the plastic recliner that he was sitting on and, with the power of Bawls surging through his veins, pounded his chest, growling loudly enough for all the see, and demanded that I, word for word "get the fawk outta his house, and take my gay ideals with me before frontin' ta him again about what he fawkin' drinks, you damn furry."
The End.
Happy Birthday, Shaper.
XXOOXXOO
The humor in all this, in case you haven't caught on, is that Shaper is actually not a testosterone driven madman, but a sweet hearted, empathic one that on occasions, will not here the things that you say if you vocal decibel is that of a field mouse...that's in a crowded arcade. But everything about this story is true. Especially the part I left out were Shaper beat my face about the side of an MvC2 cabinet by grabbing my heels and swinging. |

Congraturation! This story is happy end!
...or maybe not. Hopefully not. Anyways, happy birthday, Mr. Editor, sir!
To venture slightly offtopic, Bawls does not taste nearly as asstastic as most other energy drinks (Red Bull, both the American and Thai varieties, being another exception), and it actually quite pleasent. My inner 12-year-old thrills at such an awkwardly named product, as well, as it makes for great innuendo. However, a friend once laid the ultimate smackdown on me, telling me to "quit talking until you've finished chugging your Bawls, you Bawl-guzzler" at which point I reevaluated the necessity of the drink in shame and just upped my coffee intake instead.
We should all find Shaper's address and each send him a single bottle of Bawls. Within a week, he would have enough to fill a small swimming pool, which makes me think of the ball pit in the McDonalds' of my youth, or something. |

Thanks you guys.
And I don't really remember how Bawls tastes, but I don't miss it, so I guess it was only ok!
I really appreciate this. I am glad I got directed here while it was still my birthday. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Dang, I was thinking something entirely different when I read the title.
And as usual, late to the party by a few days.
Happy birthday boss!.... for last Sunday that is. |

I am also late. I met Shaper on the old Shmups Forum, where in a mass dicussion about Cthulu and Livejournal, we friended each other. Then, we talked about the intricate details of Gradius, the rest is history.

I'll wish Shaper a happy late birthday too. I haven't been around here for very long, but I emailed him once and he replied back. That was cool. |
