I say this because I like games so much and I'm so interested in them. Recently I've been realising that in the grand scheme of things games are very silly with little relevance to people's lives, overall they are just a fun little diversion.

Discuss.

Pretty much anything that isn't a necessity in life is silly when compared to the grand scheme of things.

However if we can find meaning, positive or negative, in the silly things that are only tertiary to our lives then I think it's worth looking into in greater detail.

Like me going from loving GTA 3 to really disliking it even though it is fun? Ie. Enjoying it as a game, but then when having played it longer realising that you hate the irresponsibility and seediness of it all. Now if only I could find an anti-GTA one where instead of finding something to dislike about it, it had a more positive vibe and spirit and message?

2-player nes games taught me to think and act in cooperation with other people, and to be respectful of that person's property/lives. shooters taught me that self-betterment is only achieved through persistance, dedication, and ritual.

i believe there's a story about coming-of-age through street fighter in issue 3 that you may want to read.

Well, not just games but anything. If you can find meaning in something that adds to your life somehow why wouldn't you want to look into in greater detail?

cooperative gameplay taught me that battletoads was just not worth the fucking effort.

Multiplayer taught me that team play and active strategising is a thing of the past.

Also, that education seems to be tragically lost in translation to the majority. And apparently "faggot" is still in style.

I firmly believe that anything worth doing is at least a little ridiculous.

:conspiracy:

to contribute: games have relevance to people's lives! For me it was more like a series of small nudges and pushes that helped form some aspects of my personality, rather than some huge philosophy bomb that changed my life forever. But then again, I was never much of a Final Fantasy player.

I sometimes feel guilty for spending time and money on video games and other hobbies. But then, I think that video games can be quite a worthwhile hobby to have, especially compared to other ways people spend free time and money. Though I guess it also depends on what games you play, what you neglect by doing so, and what you get out of them. They can be as bad as TV in many cases.

Anyway, they have an enormous relevance in my life, for better or for worse. I think it's for better, though, overall. I was recently talking with someone about how I could have theoretically made better grades in high school and college had I not played/thought about/designed video games. Even if it really were that straightforward, it's not a trade I'd be willing to make.
