|
|
My mum was just looking at TGQ that I had loaded up, and saw the Dead Rising piece, she was confused by the use of such juvenile and excessive language in a magazine that seems to be produced in a serious fashion ("ie. f*k those f*krs). I couldn't explain it myself. It didn't seem necessary, or warranted.
which isn't to say that it bothers me (or my Mum) it just seems silly and out-of-place, and I wonder what the intention was? Snobbery? |

I saw that sort of thing a lot in college writing classes, where often the subject matter was more serious than video games, and the use of such expressions more puzzling. I just figured it was just the novelty of being able to get away with it after years of stricter guidelines in school.
Off topic, but what actually bugs me is when a novel has characters who sound like kids on an elementary school playground who just learned about cussing in an otherwise interesting story. Worst of all is when the language is anachronistic, but this seems to be a popular trend. |

tgq actually contains quite a bit of cursing.
i think it may be buried in the stuff no one reads, however. _________________

Maybe I'm just acclimatized to it but the only place I'd actually find swearing unusual is in truly formal writing; it's just so much a part of the language. _________________ | Little bird fighting against a bat sect game | |

These aren't swears. Under the right circumstances neither is bitch. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

You can be damning (probably spelt that wrong) something to the flaming pits of Hell. I don't think either "damn" or "Hell" counts as a swear in that case. |

Any chance to get these numbers in articles? I am just curious at this point. Also, what is the chance of doing back issues like this? _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

God damn it. I remember when I edited that piece that I took most of the swearing out (I wrote the first draft when I was drunk).
I guess I didn't. Sorry if I offended anyone. _________________ where were you when nana komatsu got a wii? |

It would count as a swear from the standard judeo-christian understanding as damning someone to hell usurps God's authority in the matter, and is thus equivalent to taking his name in vain.
That episode of South Park about shit was on last night. "No, Fillmore, you can say, 'I have to poop and shit,' or, 'Oh shit I have to poop,' but you cannot say, 'I have to shit.'" _________________

Every time I look at this thread title I realise that, yes, there is swearing in Dead Rising. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

I'm pretty sure TGQ has never had "motherfucker" printed in it, so from my point of view, we still have a long way to go as a publication. |

Maybe in issue 8 then? A comparison of San Andreas to the films that it is often "compared" to? (Is it closer to Don't be a menace or Boys'N'Tha Hood?) |

I'd say it's somewhere in between.

I don't think it's really a question of offense. I mean, these words are ubiqitous and no one's going to be shocked by them.
It just sort of cheapens things, in my mind--especially serious writing and music. If I think of persuasive and powerful things I've read, they use precise language for effect rather than banal expletives. Of course, the average TGQ article may not necessarily be trying to reach any such heights. And other readers doubtless have a different take on things than I do. |

Meh, the articles are meant to reflect the personality of the people who write them. If Toups is a fucker, so be it!

I've always been confused by the cursing = banal equation.
I mean, it's not like cursing can't be profound. I always wonder if it's a prestige dialect issue or what. |

Forgot to mention that my comments in this thread are not specifically about the article in question--I haven't actually read that one yet. (I normally wait for the print copy to read most of the articles.)

I can't speak for anyone else, but I find a lot of non-vulgar words and phrases just as trite, such as many slang expressions and words forever ruined because they catch on in corporate culture. But the words in these other categories aren't repeated anywhere close to as often as the most common obscenities. Maybe it's similar to when someone says "like" too often as a stutter word. It would bug me to see that usage in serious writing, especially repeated throughout a book or magazine. |

So probably a prestige dialect, yes.

Well, that's more usage rather than the word itself, isn't it? I just find it interesting because writers use swear words a lot in very effective ways, including in serious writing in books and magazines (the most recent example that comes to mind is David Foster Wallace). |
