it would be a really shitty game. i don't know how knackered euro or uk tax returns are, or if they just send some guy over or whatever, but in the u.s. taxes are not simple. just ask tim geithner!

better yet, live outside of nyc for six months and inside nyc for six months and then try to figure out what portion of your income is penalized. (answer: i still don't fucking know, and that was many years ago)

however, beyond my escape-from-the-irs/suicide by cop rpg idea, i don't think anyone's ever gone so far as to dig down deep. there's no edutainment-based madness (that i know of) or indie taxes-as-metaphor-for-pain-of-the-loss-of-childhood. that said, there's probably a lot of fun to be had (and a potential pitch for gubmint fundage) in making a tax prep rpg. you could have skill checks (intelligence, wisdom and strength, so you don't pass out halfway through), dialogue trees (negotiating with one of the scam artistas at jackson hewitt, etc) and some light combat (trying to keep them from garnishing your wages, maybe getting a fake passport).

ok, so the preceding shows why there are no tax-based games. but every february i dig up my w2's and bust out the 1040a and just plain get it on, wishing that i had the will or skill to make such a thing.

Are there any rental houseboats right outside NYC/State jurisdiction?

Someone would have to build a way-out marina.

holy crap! what a terribly strange idea for a game.

someone should do an update for sarbox.

red: actually, i've helped fix up a few houseboats now. it's a very cheap way of living in the city, and not subject to property taxes. on the other hand you have to live on a fucking boat. (i know someone who was living on the gowanus canal. it smells bad in the middle of winter.)

"even in the middle of winter, (worse during the summer)" is the implication, or is winter worse for smells?

I've heard they can be frickin' cold. Do they have electrical hookups? And what kind of toilet?

winter being generally better for smells than summer; during the summer the place is damn near unapproachable. during the winter it just smells like a million farts went there to die.

some can run electricity from the shore of wherever they dock (buying it from the landlord). as far as i can remember toilets were strictly a chamberpot/go ashore for god's sake affair.

though i am convinced most people, especially when young, should be able to do their taxes, it's still a vexing process. that special blend of regular income, freelance income and interest income is totally awesome to figure out. (thankfully i've only ever fucked up on the paid too much end, not the paid too little flashbang headshots headshots kill the sons of bitches end)

i don't trust the refund mills myself, nor their payday loan x1000 scam, but i can understand the appeal. i hate doing this stuff. plus it's like double-duty punishment for my delicate sensibilities. it's how communists must feel when they buy things at the supermarket.
