crossposted from some other site:
so let's say hypothetically i'm releasing a game a week from tomorrow and i want to record a gameplay video for youtube. what's a good free screen recorder THAT WILL ALSO RECORD AUDIO FROM SPEAKERS, because that seems to be the part all the programs i've found seem to have trouble with. camstudio included. _________________

I have NO IDEA if this will help, but most people I see putting out game videos use a program called FRAPS.
Again, this may or may not be of assistance, but I'm tossing it out there for you. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

so apparently i can't record audio from speaker output because dell colluded with riaa thugs to disable that feature on my computer.
however, i CAN record audio output with total recorder.
suppose i record video with camstudio and audio with total recorder. what do i use to patch them together and make them sync? _________________

so, after collecting various bits of advice, the solution that i arrived at was to record video using camstudio, record audio using total recorder, and then add the audio track to the video track with virtualdub. the problem was getting both tracks to sync, and in a way that was foolproof and repeatable (i don't know how many times i'm going to need to record).
i hit on the idea of giving both programs the same RECORD and STOP shortcut. in practice, though, one program catches the keypress and the other one doesn't (because it's already been caught). so they needed to have different shortcuts and i a way of triggering them both at the same time.
my solution: joy2key. now i have my saturn pad rigged so that pressing the B button calls both programs' RECORD shortcuts, simultaneously, and pressing the A button calls both programs' STOP shortcuts. sure enough, i get a video track and audio track of the same length that sync perfectly. amazing. _________________

That joy2key solution is pretty brilliant. So low-tech too! You're like the McGyver of recording software. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Dess, how did you get joy2key to start both programs at the same time? I can't quite figure it out. _________________

you can set up to three keypresses to a single button on the pad. usually this is to get key combinations like CONTROL + SHIFT + S. but if you have two shortcuts that are a single key each (or one that's a single key and another that's two) you can set them to all go when you press the same button. and you'll want them to be different because usually one program will intercept a shortcut key and it won't reach the other. _________________

I figured that out, but how do you make them record at the same time? I mean, I have to have one program on top to make it start recording, and than the other to start that one recording. How do you sync the start? _________________

most recording software has a "global hotkey" that will let you start recording even if the program isn't the active window. _________________
