So, I noticed so much of what my friends and I say during Dr. Mario could also be said during Bad Sex.

"no, it doesn't go there!"
"Oh oh oh ohhhh!"
"wait I'm not finished"
"well that sucked"

AMIRITEORAMIRITE???

Haha, RAD.

Dr. Mario is one of my favourite tetris variants, even though I'm rather terrible at it. Most of my love for it probably comes from the presentation, though. Without it, I'd probably think the game is average. But it has great presentation so I like it!

Have there ever been Dr. Mario-branded compacted sugar powder candies?

At 8bit cafe in Shinjuku, you can order a drink called a Dr. Mario. It's a Dr. Pepper-based cocktail, served in a beaker, and with pill-shaped candy in a little glass dish.

Yeah the way I and my friends play Dr. Mario, I sense that there's a shit load of potential for meanness and dumping things on each other that we haven't even begun to tap. (Hell I still can't figure out how to work the color associations so I can consistently send to one person if I want to.)

It reminds me of seeing what people could do with Pokemon Puzzle League at the retro-con PhillyClassic. Just unreal how advanced players see things moderately sort of ok players don't.

I still think Puzzle League is a better game, at least head to head, with the whole seesaw thing. Dr. Mario might be better for four players.

And I am deeply bitter that Nintendo seems to be diligently working to screw me out of being able to play 4 player Dr. Mario on the GC and Wii; right now I can only do it on the GC, the update screwed Freeloader so it doesn't work (PS, WTF) and so my import disc (PS PS WTF WTF, why did they cancel the USA release) only works on the GC which I have to carry around. Now there are WiiWare shit coming down the pike, but I"m not sure if they're going for classic 4 player "couch" play, or just 2 player and/or online crap. (Why they think online is better than just playing an AI, I dunno.)

No, she said best, and if she's playing the same N64-ish Dr. Mario i am that's obviously the mad scientist dude, with the potion that blows up if you lose. (I think his name is SCIENSTEIN which just rocks)

I just ordered a copy of Dr. Mario for N64. Not sure what happened to mine, but I realized I could bring over my N64 to my main gaming buddy's and leave it there as a Dr Mario and then stop carrying a GC everytime I go over, maybe just the Wii.

N64 was a terrific system. Not to get into the usual stupid system wars but between the 4 controller ports, the analog sticks, the rumble packs, and no load time carts, it was pretty damn cool with a lot of nifty games.

I kind of know what you mean about 1 on 1 hate, but for us Dr Mario Duffers, 3 or 4 player is pleasant and social.

I haven't won more than 3 races in any circuit on the highest difficulty. I've still beaten every cup except for the final, special one.

land a jump just slightly off and it slows you down enough to lose lots of races.

the n64 was such a great system, it's pretty under-rated. i never regretted getting it over a PSX or Saturn.

Yeah, people forget that before the Gamecube Nintendo had a pretty much unbroken reputation for excellent games that lasted all through the n64 era. So many classics on that system!

That n64 excitebike was barely a Nintendo game, it was so fucking complex! You needed to really know what you were doing before you could even go around a corner without falling off your bike. I'd like to see the Japanese nintendo make a 3D Excitebike, and use the same model as the excitebike trophy in Smash Bros. Melee. Can anyone find a picture of it I can't and now I must go to a meeting bye

Hmm. Although the 'net is smooth out the regional differences in perception, I think different subgroups are likely to read the relative success or failure of various systems differently.

I think the Nintendo's reputation started suffering with the N64; despite leading off with great stuff like Mario 64, later having stuff like Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64 (and the new concept of rumble), Z:OoT, and then ignominiously proving the storage capacity of carts w/ Conker, there was that dry spell after the release that really hurt them, reputation wise, especially once it was known Square jumped ship. Between retaining big kid-friendly cartridges in lieu of CDs and a generally "friendly" design sense, maybe even with some "Sonic is more radical than Mario" thinking, perception of Nintendo shifted. (Despite it being THE best system for couch gaming w/ a couple of friends in history up 'til that point)

GameCube just wasn't the bounce back. For the retarded USA market, the nice purple was probably a bad choice, and despite somewhat following the pack in format and controller, it wasn't looked at favorably enough. Despite amazing stuff like Rogue Squadron and Monkey Ball and a kinetic update to Smash, the delay/absence of a "real Mario game" and still relative paucity of 3rd party shovelware, along with the 3D update of Metroid and Pikmin being the only "new" franchise (and even Zelda getting a daring cartoony treatment) it continued the process that I still say started with the N64.

Anyway, I'm just bitter that the PS2 didn't have 4 controller ports, thus giving couch gaming a tremendous blow to start off the century with. (which reminds me of how many things Xbox did right, despite the bulk of the core system and its first gen controllers)

YES.

Pokemon Snap is fun! Snap and Pokemon Battle Arena 64 made me suspect they had planned to make a 'real' n64 pokemon game at some point but ended up jut splitting it up;

I never got to play Hey you! Pikachu Sad

cycle you also forgot the amazing excitebike 64 which is how i started to derail daphny's thread in the first place. that alone should put it at the top of your list.

harveyjames, the last unlockable on the cartridge is a 3d graphicked version of the original excitebike (which, by the way, is also on the cartridge, as well as a phenomenal 3d track editor and multiplayer motorcycle soccer). anyhow, i couldn't tell you how it plays since i'm pretty sure no one has ever unlocked it ever.

Huh, I remember the Trigan Empire from school, it was pretty amazing looking. It was a fully painted comic book about space guys! Somehow I didn't want to read it, though.

Helicopterp, have you played MX Unleashed for the XBOX? I've never played Excitebike 64, but MX Unleashed plays how I would imagine it would. It's pretty sweet.

The clay model Dr. Mario cover for Nintendo Power is one of the wallpaper options I've put onto my cellphone. Dr. Mario was also a very cool dude in Smash Bros. Melee and I miss him in Brawl. I suck at his game though.

No, I haven't! But I sure will. I assume the ps2 version will be the same?

I am still reluctant to play as any character other than the Good Doctor in Melee. Is the Dr. Mario music still in Brawl? I loved hearing it on the Mario 2 stage.

You know how this thread is about how awesome Nintendo was in the N64 era because they actually released really good, original new things? Yeah, well I'm not paying $10 for Dr. Mario when I've already bought it for more than that 10 times.

Oddly enough my gripe has always been not enough Dr Mario... they didn't release Puzzle Collection w/ 4 player Dr Mario and Panel de Pon and Yoshi's Cookie here, and I keep a GC around because the freeloader boot disk stopped working for the Wii.

So tell me, does it now support 4 player head to head to head to head on the Wii w/o being online?

It's not Nintendo's fault you bought the same game 10 times. Also, you can't blame them for thinking the same people who would buy it 10 times would buy it an 11th time. At least they aren't asking you to pay more for it!

As for not making things that are good and original, they made a controller you can wave around and pretend like you're playing tennis which has taken the world by storm. What do you want, jam on it?
