Playing ikaruga without chaining is not playing ikaruga.

This is pretty much the reason that I don't like the game as much as I did before I learned this.

This is the first time I ever played Ikaruga on Easy, after having owned the Dreamcast version since it came out. And what do you know, BIG BROTHER WAS WATCHING.

And yeah, it's kind of vanilla that way. Doesn't even make the game easier! Just makes it boring. Hard mode is also kind of beside the point, I think. Normal is really where the dynamics fall into place.

Daph, I got several pop-up notices right on top of my ship while playing a bullet hell shooter. After I finished freaking out, I finished playing. Then I sent you some response or another, and you didn't reply. Whatever, woman!

Who are you, Cycle? I get lots of weird friend requests, and I don't know what to do about them all.

Shaper is right. Given that I still can't get past level four, after seven or eight years, I'm not too worried though!

That said: I find I'm actually way better at the game on XBL than on the Dreamcast. Not sure why that is. Maybe I've just mulched on it subconsciously.

People often say you have to chain to enjoy Ikaruga or the game sucks if you don't, but I think it's a little more complicated than that. There is a huge gray area between shooting recklessly and high-level chaining. The game rewards you for not chaining (or not completely chaining) patterns if you don't want to worry about them. It lets you pick and choose, piecing together a level until eventually you are seeing and doing things where before you were only hiding or dying. The game doesn't just humble you, but encourages you to play in a humble way. I guess that's where people have a problem.

Easy mode's chapter 4 probably coheres with the game's themes better than Normal because you can just stay behind the outside wall in safety the whole time. It's easier to become familiarized.

Homing missiles don't make much sense until Normal, however. Like other Treasure games, Easy seems pointless after you've played Normal for a while. But it can be a good first step.
