I hear this one is by a new team! So who knows!

Having said that I've haven't liked a single Sonic the Hedgehog game to date, but even so, it's got every chance in the world of being good!

Sonic was fine until 1995. Then began the terror.

So I guess what I consider "Sonic" was only really hot for four years.

The level art for this game looks boring: the gameplay looks pretty fucking boring too. CRATES.

You know what's a little strange? Sonic's Mister Hyde there is all furrytexturemapped, but Sonic himself remains entirely plasticine. He actually reminds me a bit of Gumby.

Also strange: the continued existence of new Sonic games.

Well people keep buying them so you know they're going to keep making them, regardless of quality.

I like to think there's always hope though, and I've never really been a big Sonic fan. I just kind of feel sorry for the people who are big Sonic fans. You just know each new release has to be painful for them.

That's a good point. That thing has hair. What's Sonic got? Are those blue spikes his skull?

Sonic's completely the wrong shape for the games he stars in, anyway. Wind Waker's Link has stubby little legs for a reason. Sonic seems too lanky and wibbly-wobbly to be a 3D platform game character. It never feels right, controlling him.

There's still hope for the Sonic RPG though right.

I played SONIC ADVENTURE DX not that long ago (the PC version) a,d boy howdy, it hasn't aged well. I remember it being fantastic when it first came out on the DC, but yeah. It's above average, though! Also what's so DX about it, I was still falling through floors like crazy. I haven't played a Sonic game since, except for the Rush games which I didn't care for (and this new game looks like Sonic Rush for "real" consoles). Oh yeah, I also played Secret Rings and thought it was terrible and sold it back on ebay a couple days later.

Here is gameplay footage of the new video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjxnhXs7Mqs

So yeah, I've pretty mich given up on Sonic. Only the four 16-bit platform games mean anything to me. Oh, and the first two SMS ones, I guess.

The video of the 2.5d gameplay makes me think that this might actually end up being a good game, but this picture and the fact that they're already showing off pictures of the cutscenes means chances are slim. What role does long, drawn out story (regardless of how good it is) play in a Sonic game? Is it the fact that Sonic has been successful as a comic and a TV show the reason they keep trying to wedge one into the games?

Regardless, if this game is twice as good as the Wii Sonic game or 10 times as good as the Xbox one, it'll still be shitty. I have little hope.

Hey we should petition Sega to stop making Sonic games! I bet we'd get loads of signatures

Has anyone seen Snake's codec conversation about Sonic in SSB:Brawl? He basically just says Sonic bugs him. And that's it. I have an inkling those codec bits were written by Kojima, too, because there's a bit where Mei Ling goes off on a REALLY INTERESTING tangent about how telecommunications are a form of magic. Actually, it is sort of interesting. But anyway that's textbook Kojima. Conclusion: Kojima hates Sonic

Actually, I believe Ryan Payton said that the folks over at Nintendo wrote the codec conversations and he essentially went over them to make sure they fit, and he was surprised about how big of fans they were, or something.

At least, I think he said this on one of the podcasts. I could be misremembering or misinterpreting.

You know, I don't see a whole lot in the leaked Sonic Unleashed footage to suggest it's that bad. As far as I can tell, if you like Sonic the Hedgehog you're probably going to like this!

The lack of level design is an issue/also the insipid art direction.

I met those guys at GDC! Pretty nice bunch of guys. Apparently they know tons of shit that they can't talk about and use it to leverage the shit out of publishers for coverage.

I got into a long discussion with my boss about the differences between boutique video game websites (and the debates they encourage) and the general preferences of the consumer.

Could it be that this sort of game is what Sonic fans want? Why do they want this, while we want a traditional, sprite-based, side-scroller that has specific, consistent physics?

What is wrong with the consumer? Why do developers think that image of Weresonic is going to drum up interest? (Or does it!?)

For those of you out there not brave enough to withstand the horror of ED, I sneaked into the ENEMY BASE and pulled out this awesome comic:

Sonic the Hedgehog is the flamboyant mascot of the Sega Corporation and a more XTREME ripoff of Mickey Mouse. He is also a form of mind control made by the Sega Corporation in an attempt to turn kids into furries. A noted pioneer of the furry subculture, Sonic is the preferred fap material for DevianTART fags. Born in 1991, Sonic was a lovable game character in Sega's kick-ass 2D side scrollers, all of which were like "OH MY GOD I'M THE MOTHERFUCKING RUNNER OF THE NORTH STAR!" With the debut of the Sega Dreamcast and an all new INNOVATIVE 3D game engine, Sonic followed his rainbow and did a U-turn into fail town. It is at this point that the Sonic games went from being Sonic and his buddy Tails fighting the forces of Robotnik to ORIGINAL CHARACTER DON'T STEAL everywhere. Suddenly, the series had PINK LOVE INTEREST HEDGEHOG WITH GIANT MALLET BAKA BAKA and GOTH TITS and I AM BLACK PUMPKIN HILL NIGGA and GWOGGIE and FIND DA COMPUTER ROOM and EMO SONIC BUT NOT SONIC BLACK REPAINT appearing out of fucking nowhere. Because what's better than racing at super fast speeds, ricocheting off spring-a-ma-jigs, HOLY SHIT RUNNING UPSIDE DOWN, and head butting robots? Give up?! It's a horde of unlikable characters jismed all over your face.

I really want this game to be good, but that werewolf thing is a really bad sign.

Oh, and the dude who disliked Sonic Rush - why didntcha like it? The last boss? Yeah, he sure was lame. Otherwise a very fun game, once you get past the need to memorize levels.

I'm probably going to pick up that Bioware RPG of sonic. I was looking over some information about it and it looks kind of unintentionally hilarious.

Sonic is kind of weird.
I think it's a generational thing, I was going off to college and wasn't doing consoles any more (well, the Atari 7800 and Vectrex, I was retro even then) right around when Sonic came out. So I kind of missed the whole Sonicverse thing, and so like Mario vs Sonic Olympics only seems like half a universe, or something. Judging by the amount of Rule34 stuff, there might be a younger generation for whom it resonates a bit more.
