Interesting fact: In the early 1800's in NYC a politician/police commissioner type finally managed to properly outfit his police force in standard uniforms, except the uniforms were somewhat dandyish and when the police tried to enter the vicious, nasty parts of town wearing them, they were summarily mocked and assaulted. The uniforms were retired and they instead wore the familiar star badges with their names, made from copper. Hence, "coppers" and "cops".

Gangs of New York is an interesting book, but it jumps around so much chronologically and from neighborhood to neighborhood that it's hard to tell what was going on throughout the city at any given time. Still, it holds up remarkably, given its 1928 authorship.

it really is a treasure trove of awesome (with some hilariously backwards racial and cultural biases) short stories.

I really like the bit where he just begins to relate the various tales of the mythical Mose (the 8 foot tall dude who'd swim around Manhattan in six strokes and carried around horsecarts with horses attached when it amused him to do so), as straight-faced as every other bit of the book. You suddenly think "wait, am I supposed to be disbelieving everything here?"

Yeah, the various figures in the book that take on a way larger than any life could have proportion are really awesome.

I can say, as a current philadelphian, that none of my frequent Wawas were rooftop-robbed by any gay twin porn stars.

Maybe they just backflipped away too quickly to be observed?
