Yeah, I've been playing this since the first beta and it's really fantastic. I talked to my editor and convinced him to let me do a REAL FULL PAGE review which is probably a first for a $10 game!

But yeah, totally amazing game. Everybody buy it!

I finally managed to purchase it, after a lengthy battle convincing Valve I did actually own the credit card, with my name, that I was attempting to use. Still, it's all done now, and soon I'll actually get around to playing it.

I'm afraid that this is going to make me start cringing whenever I get to the parts of certain songs that I previously looked forward to. A lot of my favorites sure are challenging.

He was using his ren. fair folk and minstrel mp3s to play the game and they don't have a big enough kick drum.

no i tried minimal tech house, really crazy shit and boards of canada and nothing seemed to match up. mr. gillen mentioned two specific modes, which i don't think i had tried, which seem to work better than the rest of them.

my experience was more suck controls and no real matchup of anything to anything.

An xbox360 pad helps a lot.

fun fact: shoving a stars of the lid track into it will get you a really fast, pleasantly smooth track with loads of traffic.

which probably means that something's broken.

edit: everyone should post their scoreboard names. (I'm autokratorlovestick D: )

My name in the game is the same as my name here. I think their server is overwhelmed--it saves my scores only about one in four races, and I can't call up any of the charts.

Tried the demo.

17166 score on first song I tried at random.

I wonder when people will try to game the system by manufacturing custom "songs" to garner max points.

Any bets on how long it will take?

Wouldn't that be a curious phenomenon. I'd listen to an album of songs/audio created specifically to generate favourable Audiosurf tracks; that'd be really interesting.

You know the Vib Ribbon soundtrack is a bunch of pop songs specifically composed to be fun to play in a videogame that converts waveform peaks into game data. They do all sorts of crazy things like speed up or slow down at key points in the song. It's probably ideal for Audio Surf.

No Steam.

Maybe what you meant by "abandon your materialist ways" is forego the physical disc and d/l instead

You misunderstand me. I don't want a CD or nothin'. I just don't want Steam. I barely even know what Steam is; it just seems like this pain in the arse thing. I don't want Steam -- I want Audiosurf. Surely I am not the only person who feels this way.

I want Audiosurf a lot, so I will get it via Steam if I have to, but if it's going to be gettable in a non-Steam way at some point, I'm happy to wait.

Yeah, I'm not really down with Steam, but it doesn't get in the way of buying or playing this one too much.

I doubt it will get a seperate release, since it uses Valves Steamworks thing.

Steam's great. You can get all sorts of games off of it for incredibly good value, to the point where it's more convenient to get them off steam than it is to pirate them (every Id game, third party Id game and expansion pack for $50!)

Patrick and Cycle are just wary of anything that doesn't have a name like 'pookanangnang' or 'bizzabozza', because they come from Australia where everything has a name like that, you see.

does audiosurf play nice with itunes yet? last time i had tried it audiosurf would grouse at opening audio files with drm attached, and as a person who has bought music from itunes that includes a decent part of my library

The biggest problem with Steam is that it doesn't tell you how big games are before you buy them. That's pretty important information in a country with stupid broadband deals that we can't do much about.

That and it forces you to download updates that are like a gig in size.

Also harvey can you communicate with people without insulting them, seriously go fuck yourself, you bombtastic twat.

Also it's still easier to pirate games (and play them because you don't have to go through steam).

Surf music can get some crazy roads in this game.

Bomboras lol.

So, what are people listening to with this game?

edit:

Next up, along with a bunch of random stuff (Mostly DEVO): I'll see if this works.

I don't understand all this Steam hate on the internet. Not this forum specifically, but like, in general. I mean unless you're one of those guys who was all up in the Steam beta, when installing it was basically equivalent to pouring honey into your computer, but seriously, Steam is really great now. Like, great to the point where I am attributing mystical effects to it, like the curing of my mysterious recurring leg sores. And these diamonds I found in my teeth last night. Steam did it.

Also I'm pretty sure Steam does tell you file sizes on the online store, before you download. Also inside the minimum requirements.

Also you can disable automatic updating. Though I don't know why you would as the downloads are usually quite small and it's all extra content and balance patches and countless other good things from our benevolent overlords. And it's not like Audiosurf or any of those hundred other little non-Valve games will ever get patched anyway, the only ones that receive regular updating are the proper Steam titles like HL, TF2 etc. Which you would actively want to be patched as it makes the multiplayer content sexier and better than ever.

"Unknown Track 3" seems to be extremely popular!

Channel Surfing.

The sequel to audiosurf (VideoSurf!) will have facial recognition technology and we will get points for collecting the heads of actors, newscasters, world leaders, etc. as we cycle through the channels.

Plus get set-bonuses for collecting groups of similar entities.

Had to restart a bunch of times last night. I was trying to surf a cover of Death Comes Ripping by the Misfits, but I had a mental image of the Cookie Monster singing it and jumping around breaking things. Couldn't focus.

Dueling Banjos was quite good, and funny.

Dueling Drums got to the point that it was insane.

Scroll down a bit to find those 2 tracks. Have to use a sampler to grab them, then convert to mp3.
You will need this, too.

It's worth it.
2 reasons:
1. Once you have gone through the hassle, you will be able to do it again for many things in the future.

2. They are really fun to surf, especially Duelling Drums.

Manic!

I am confused as to how you would use Audacity to grab those? And by confused I mean "very interested". Please expound!

Also, if you could just host the mp3's up, that would be awesome.

I reviewed this game for the magazine, I gave it NINE OUT TEN just FYI. As usual, I wish I had more space (it was just a one pager), but oh well. I shouldn't complain, atleast we killed half page reviews a couple years back...

I will look into hosting later.

I opened them in winamp, but I think you can use anything else that will play it.

Launch Audacity
Remember to install the LAME mp3 encoder thingy first. I provided the link in the other post. Otherwise you will be prompted to install it at the last step and it will give you a window to browse for it's location. I just dropped mine on the desktop for easy finding.
(If you have to install at the last step you might have to to do a do over. Just that once.)

Then:

Set to Stereo Mix, or mono mix. Microphone would probably be really crappy, as you would have to put it next to a speaker.

Hit the Record button when the song is starting.

Hit the Stop button when the song is finished.

Hit the File Button next.

Click Export as MP3.

When exiting the program it will ask you if you want to save the session. Just click no.

The upshot of this tortuous process is you can now steal shit all the time.

I also snagged a recorder toolbar from here, but it won't steal shit that isn't played by the browser itself. Or maybe I was doing it wrong.

I was glad to see that happen. Along with the XBox reviews.

I mean really, half-page reviews in a print magazine? Why bother.

Also seriously guys, get over Steam and install it. It's free, easy, and it won't fuck up your computer. You could do much worse in a content delivery system.

I tried Midnight.

It sounds like tinny, cheap electronic surf music. But it performs as advertised.

Bomboras/any other real surf music does better.

I AM quite impressed that someone on the site suggested that audiosurf composers be called "Level Designers".

I have already seen a few songs where people have very clearly just made a version of the song that plays the song twice but has the same ID3 tag to win. when a song is 5:01 for everyone else and the top score is for a 10:02 version, come on. thankfully there is a reporting system built in for this.

I am equal parts glad that people are starting to make music specifically for this awesome game, and also saddened that people have the time to dick with their mp3's to get better songs scores. Sad

wouldn't it be funny if the scoring system was really an RIAA sting in disguise and the entire game was a ruse to sue illegal downloaders?
