Marjane Satrapis, who made Persepolis, is interviewed in this week's Panel Borders podcast. She's an incredibly intelligent and normal-sounding person for someone who does comic books!

Well, obviously: She's part of the European tradition and is Middle Eastern to boot.

Harvey, I take it you're familiar with the works of Moebius or Alejandro Jodorowsky, but have you read anything by Enki Bilal?

Also; Grant Morrison, Bryan Talbot, Mike Mignola, Matt Wagner and Jonathan Hickman, damn it. Those guys aren't dumb. >:|

Even though I loathe The Guardian with a passion:

"I'm a lady." She likes the sound of lady so much that she repeats it, running it off her tongue with lascivious delight. "I'm a lady." She likes to mislead people, she says. "It is better not to look like what you are; it is better to look like a bourgeois woman because then all the doors are open for you and then you can just go and make hell. That is much more exciting."

And on the Colbert Report and Culture Pulp (I also like this Æon Flux one).

Oh, hey, strangely enough I've been rereading From Hell again. Still amazing.

A friend of mine started me on The Invisibles. I'm on vol. 3, Entropy in the UK.

Whatever periodic cocktail of drugs Morrison does, I both want and never want to take, because it would shatter my consciousness into a thousand silvery-gold needles that would reach out from this world and stab into the thought-organs of intelligent life throughout all universes. This guy does a lot of drugs.

He really doesn't. At least not any more.

Transhuman #2 has a WE3 joke. That's all the reason you need to read it. Punisher MAX is still being fucking excellent and Casanova's finale has the principal antagonist revealed to be none other than Thomas Pynchon - maybe.

his drawings are pretty though

i dont know where this can go really but im curious, probably because im just a fan and i want more dave sim stuff and ill probably apologize for anything bad he puts out anyway

He is! Despite the wonky translation - which is all too common when dealing with French works for some reason - I'd say give The Hunting Party and the Hatzfeld tetralogy (Most prefer the Nikipol trilogy, though) and Bleeding Hearts and Other Stories (If it has indeed been translated).

I have yet to find Glamourpuss. I bought The Nightly News for a friend of mine, as she's in graphic design and loved Channel Zero.

Graphic designers should check both those out, actually.

There are 2 covers of Glamourpuss - one that's a fake fashion magazine, another that's a fake superhero comic. It's a neat idea that's obviously trying to target 2 different demographics. The picture is still the same though, so it's not really worth owning both.

Also, I'm rereading Reads and I've decided that everyone needs to experience it. It's just so fucking strange. I don't even like the story in this part of the comic, but Reads is way more than a comic.

Each of the first 6 issues starts with a prose story that satirizes the comics publishing industry. It's actually pretty well written. The prose portion gets progressively smaller, so that at the end of the first half there's 1 concluding page of text and then a 40 page fight scene.

Then we zoom out from the fight scene to see Dave Sim drawing Cerebus.

The next 6 issues end with prose, and the prose gets progressively longer. It's not a story anymore. It's just the reader and Dave Sim's alter ego "Viktor Davis" chatting. Sim pulls crazy postermodern shit here, like writing "the reader sees..." and "the reader thinks..."

Oh, and did I mention, there's NO DIALOGUE in the second half of the comic. So it alternates between silent comic pages and pure prose.

It all culminates in a 15 page essay on why women are evil. This is the most famous thing about Reads for people who've never read it. But when you experience the entire book, it's not even the strangest thing about it.

This is Dave Sim's original attempt to alienate his entire fucking audience, and it's still his most interesting.

Hmm! Sounds interesting!

I just laughed at Penny Arcade for the first time in possibly ever:

http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/5/26/

Also, Joey told me to read EMPOWERED so I did. It's, um, ok? Who is it for? Weirdos? People who like innocuous mainstream hollywood entertainment but wish there were more tits and nakedness in it? It's a strange piece of work. I can't deny it's well drawn, and the dude has a knack for characterization and dialogue. He could write for a Buffy the Vampire comic or something because the writing has the kind of flavour they would go nuts for. Except, since he's already limited his audience to the narrow and very specific demographic of 'creeps' because of the subject matter (a superhero who loses her powers when her clothes fall off) and way he draws, why does he bother writing in this slick tv style? It's not like it matters.

It's weird. He's taken this path which basically eshews commerical success and mainstream acceptance, so we can only assume that what he writes and draws is 100% his unfiltered artistic vision. It's just that his vision happens to be 'A superhero version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer but with more boobs flopping about the place.'

I'm sure there are some cultures where it is perfectly feasable that mainstream entertainment would have boobs flopping about all over the place and cartoon women who look like they are solely designed for the titillation of men. Germany, probably. Seriously I bet they lap this shit up over there. NON-WEIRDOS, though, should give it a miss.

That looks pretty excellent! That's kind of the opposite of Empowered because it is what it is, rather than an uneasy mixture of Neutral and D:

I haven't read Empowered yet, but I read porn comics to get closer to the artist. A person's sexual fantasies are deeply personal - you bare your soul when you lay it on the page. Black Kiss might not be the best thing Howard Chaykin did (as great as it is), and Lost Girls certainly isn't the best Alan Moore comic, but they're very personal works.

As much as I love Joss Whedon, he would be more respectable if he channeled his superpowered girl fetish into porn rather than letting it infect everything else he does.

Yeah, but it's not like it takes away from his work.

Honestly, if you want something straight-forward from Morrison, I suggest you find WE3 or All-Star Superman.

I had a conversation with a bunch of vietnamese-canadian anime nerds the other day, whose opening line to me was 'so I heard you like anime!' It's funny how just because you both like Japanese cartoons it doesn't necessarily mean you have anything in common at all. Here is how they reacted to my talking about stuff I like:

FLCL: 'It was strange... but interesting. I didn't understand it.'
MINDGAME: 'It sounds strange... but interesting. It sounds a lot like the movie Pinocchio!
My Neighbour Totoro: 'It was strange. I didn't really understand it.'
Kago Shintaro Comics: '...' (one of them stopped talking to me)

Apparently the big thing at the moment is something called Deathnote! Even the non-anime nerds who were present that day seemed to have heard of or even read Deathnote. It looks ok! Should I read it?

Read it, but it's not anything ground-breaking. And it turns to shit once the primary antagonist gets lights out (Not much of a spoiler, I mean, come on).

Have you read Monster, 20th Century Boys or Pluto, all by Naoki Urasawa?

No, are they good? Maybe you should post pictures. I think this is the ideal thread for posting pictures.

I thought I read the first issue of Death Note online yesterday, but it turned out I'd just read the pilot. It was quite good! The pacing reminded me of old 70's manga like the japanese adaptation of Spiderman. As in, it's pretty slow and there's a lot of people talking with full stops. I like it. The art is on some Junji Ito shit. From what I've seen of the main series, it's a lot more Shonen Jumpified.

The worst thing is at the start I was thinking 'HEY JAMES, DON'T RUIN THIS FRIENDSHIP BY MAKING A BUNCH OF CLUMSY ATTEMPTS TO COME ON TO HER, LIKE YOU ALWAYS DO', which is exactly what I did all of 3 weeks later.

Dude I already got approached by some US comics people

I think doing comics as a job would be horrible! It pays awfully for a huge amount of hours. It's only fun if you retain some kind of creative autonomy, which I can do perfectly well on my own without UNCLE SAM'S DICK IN MY MOUTH

Hey, so, like I picked up the Black Dossier recently. I just started it, and I like it better than the second volume already. It makes me wish I'd read Nineteen Eighty-Four more recently.

If Grant Morrison had tried to get away with even 2/3s of what goes on in The Black Dossier, he'd probably have to be self-publishing by now.

This is important:

Jordan Mechner is doing an adaptation of his very own Prince of Persia!

This is the most exciting piece of surprise news in both gaming and comics I've heard in a while!

I liked it, but you can't deny that it's straight up the most byzantine thing ever published in the entire history of comic books.
