Disney is adapting a Philip K. Dick short in 2012, bizarrely enough. Unsurprisingly, it's going to be his only foray into fantasy fiction, King of the Elves.

Last night watched The number 23.

Maybe could have been done better, but I liked it anyway.

Good practice maybe for playing Pathologic.
Demo downloaded and ready to go.

Next up is Dr. Death

Yes indeed, I am getting ready to play Pathologic.

Oh absolutely. I'd put it right up there with Torque on the fantastic trash list. They both mine different veins though.

Does anyone know if Shoot Em Up would have a place there too, or is it just bad?

Oh that's what I was hoping for. In case my tone's been misjudged, I actually really love Torque and Crank and I'm always on the lookout for other shamelessly trashy stuff like them.

So can you give me more?

The epic zenith of Torque is probably the part when the dark-haired, multi-pierced evil biker chick faces off, jousting style, against the blonde good/love interest biker chick under some raised highway thingy which inexplicably has some chinese farmers market going on, and also a giant MOUNTAIN DEW sign at one end and a giant PEPSI sign at the other.

Also, badass bikers eat DORITOS, y'heard?

Also, the black biker gang led by Ice-T make their initial appearance at a BLACK BIKER GANG BBQ.

You know, Ebert. . . I mean, ok, I can understand you liking the movie because it stirs up the knowledge of some random fear you have. That's a perfectly valid reason to like it. But there's no reason to disparage other reviewers for not liking it. It may not, in fact, have anything to do with it not being actiony enough! It may be that the movie is an utter turd to anyone who isn't afraid of purposeful environmental revenge!

This cracked me up: "I could probably write an entire list based just on poor Betty Buckley's character, a deranged shut-in with whom (of course!) Elliot, Alma, and Jess finally find quasi-refuge. But I'll limit myself to Elliot's discovery that she keeps a large, meticulously attired doll in her bed (message: She's crazy!)."

It's not really very funny. Actually avoid seeing it, because the funny is in the movie trickled through to you via others' perceptions.

A friend of mine only kept himself entertained by counting the times the mic drooped into the scene. Sad

No one gives a fuck about Stan Winston and would rather complain about a shoddy Z-movie. Neutral

SPOILERS: Ebert is an idiot oh no

Ok fine I'll talk about Stan Winston. Obviously the effects and monster designs in Edward Scissorhands, Predator, Aliens, and Terminator 2 are awesome to this day. Monster Squad, not so much. The original Terminator has its charm at the end, but it's awkward, so I don't know where to put it. I can't look at Jurassic Park without rosy glasses, were the dinosaurs really that good?

I didn't know he directed Pumpkinhead! What a terrible movie. I love it. Also didn't know he was responsible for Batman Returns' effects, which, if nothing else, knew exactly the visual style it wanted.

Also, the first Terminator was better. I never really got the appeal of the second one.

And sorry Dracko, but. . . apparently The Happening is supposed to be a terribly goofy B movie. Shyamalan's pretty arrogant to think he can make "the best B movie you will ever see," though. I've seen a goddamned lot of B movies.

I don't think he understands what makes a movie qualify as a "b-movie".

Also, what makes b-movies fun.

Roger Ebert wrote Beyond The Valley of the Dolls, which is pretty much the coolest B-movie I've ever seen, so I'd say he's a pretty good authority in the subject.

I didn't either. Pumpkinhead (the first one) is one of those great horror movies that's not in any way or shape a "good film"

On the other subject, is Unbreakable going to be M.Night Shalamalamadingy's only good movie? Is The Happening at least not as terribly pretentious and aweful as The Lady In the Water where he wrote himself as the the character who is the SAVIOR OF HUMANITY?

(oh, shit, sorry, minor spoilerz)

Fuck him for that movie. I hate, HATE Lady In the Water. I couldn't finish it when I rented it, then my girlfriend brought it home again to test my endurance, but the damn thing broke me again. It's up there with Lake Placid and Omega Code in terms of pure shit.

Mr. Death was interesting. I don't see how a real engineer could have such a glaring miscomprehension of scientific method. On the other hand, sneaking into a death camp to collect samples was pretty gutsy. He did it on his honeymoon. yay!
There's more, but it's pathetic.

Since then: ( most recent to earlier.)

In the Realms Of The Unreal. Since I'm never going to read the 15000 page novel, this is a handy substitute. About an hour and a half of interviews and Darger's art with narration from the book. Nice.

A Decade Under the Influence. 3 hours of shit about 70s film. Now I be edumacated.

Black Snake Moan. Cheesy but ok.

Bullitt. Classic. The chase scenes weren't as good as I remembered and the "man denies emotions" thing is so so tired.

Tibetan Book of the Dead. The animations are wonderful- like the resurrection scene in Conan where the demons come to take him back. Also sorta like the mushroom trip in NBK.

The U.S. vs. John Lennon. Interesting, US gov't. loonies pertectin' us frum say-tanik commies!

Vanishing Point. I liked it. But not a huge lot. A car chase film with cops and helicopters and bikers and hippies and more cops and wierdos. Should have been way better.

Near Dark. modern vampires, coulda been yawny if they were gothy, but they're hicks instead. I love the scene where bullet-proof vampires playing cards accuse each other of cheating and hold guns in each other's faces, then laugh. Lance Henriksen was great! And his facial scar ruled.

Re-Animator. yay!

Miracle Mile. Fun classic. I love this stuff but only found the film okay. Escape the city before the nukes rain down!

Android Apocalypse. bad sci-fi. Not SF.

I Am Omega. This is a real stinker. A martial arts-ish take on I Am Legend. The one cool thing is that the guy is rigging explosives to gas lines to blow up a city full of zombies. Oh, and the Darwinists who LIKE living the life of Zombie War also makes it slightly cool.

I Am Curious: Yellow It's so Swedish! I loved the part about using Martin Luther King's tactics against a Soviet Invasion. ohlol

I Shot Andy Warhol. Truly tragic, I couldn't care less about that asshole Warhol. I wish someone could go back in time and give Valerie an Industrial Engineering and Systems Analysis scholarship. Just to see what she would have done. If she would have lowered herself to getting a job.

Pumping Iron. I love the part in the extra content where Arnie says "Yes, I DID inhale!". Also, Arnie relaxing with a joint. I should have ordered this along with some Leni Riefenstahl.

Night of the Comet. cheesy 80s post apoc with zombies. I like it for nostalgia purposes.

Jade. eroti thriller, marginally ok.

Joe. Nice depressing 70's film; the ending is one of the greatest things ever. Watch It!
Also, Susan Sarandon w/o cleavage?

The Avengers '66: Vol. 1 (4-Disc Series) Good Stuff!

A Hole in My Heart. Obviously the sexual content wasn't intended to be sexy. I suppose it's some kind of commentary on something. blah.

The Best of Benny Hill. I remember this used to be PBS. I think it was PBS. They should recycle!

The Passion of Ayn Rand. yawn, but I wouldn't mind fucking Helen Mirren.

The Nazis: A Warning from History: Disc 1 (2-Disc Series)- Jack Booted Thugs Ahoy!

The Golden Compass. meh, but some nice premises. I despise the class crap.

Grease. I always wanted to see this but never did. S'alright.

I saw that I shot Andy Warhol movie, it was shitty. If you couldn't care less about Andy Warhol why on earth did you rent a movie called 'I Shot Andy Warhol'?

That Schwartzenegger documentary sounds great! Arnie gives good Director's Commentary. The Conan the Barbarian commentary is good where he just says what's happening on the screen like 'NOW WE'RE RUNNING'.

The movie itself was a bit shit. I just wanted to see a crazy lady being batshit and a guy getting shot.
Crazy lady actually started out smart, then descended into sophomorism and crazy.

Watched Conan the Destroyer. meh, but Arnie had some good lines:

Thief sidekick: "It's not like we stole everything he had!"

Conan: "We didn't have time."

Watched Easy Rider. Makes you want to go out and kill hicks and cops. The contrast of the two main characters is excellent. Dennis Hopper as ugly american in freak's clothing. Maybe I'm unkind, to be more fair he's partly pragmatic cosmic cowboy and partly insensitive dickhead. Peter Fonda seemed like solid water (except warm, not icy). Placidity in human form. In the eye of the storm, thinkin' 'bout shit.

I didn't like it as much as when I saw it as a teenager. As a teenager I guess it was like hey im watchin ez rider how cool.

But I still like it. They could have at least let Nicholsen get to New Orleans. But then it wouldn't have been tragic enough.

Tonight I'm watching Battle Of Algiers. The second time I've seen it. Impressions tommorrow.

I've also done this recently. I haven't seen the sequel in a long time, but I've seen Barbarian many times since. I watched Barbarian then the next night Destroyer, and it was funny to see the second film attempt to outdo the camel punch of the first with Conan punching out a HORSE in battle, then punching out a camel on his return to town. I forgot about that, which is odd considering how well I remember him doing it in the first film.

Alrighty, done with Battle of Algiers.

Excellent. Two hours of goodness. Maybe it could have been shrunk a bit, but maybe not.

Reminded me of 1984- the part about being bombed by "extremely civilized people".
Except not so civilized.

The selective perception of the colonialist mindset is amazing.
"France is your Motherland!" (being broadcast to Algerians, North Korea style with PA systems/etc.) WTF?
Ex-members of French Resistance cells waterboarding Algerians?
Slave labor? (Well, forced labor. close.)

The ending makes me wonder if the end action could have succeeded at the beginning. Obviously at the beginning the people weren't primed to do it, and the enemy wasn't primed to receive it.

Taliban type shit is not new. That's all I will say about Algeria's liberators.

I also saw Hellboy 2 recently; less of an all-round awesome movie, but phenomenal visual design there.

Was anyone else disappointed with how generic-looking the Watchmen movie is? All the production designs looked like they'd make a genuine effort to match the colour styling and the shapes and forms of Dave Gibbon's artwork. But the trailer just showed the movie to be the same colour as every other fucking hollywood blockbuster, grey-y blue and grey-y brown. Ass.

Yes, it's closely followed by Speed Racer and Hellboy 2. Some really great (and quite a few really generic) action movies this summer. Dark Knight may be one of the best action movies of the decade/century though.

First off it's a teaser, so things are very likely to change from this to finished product. 300 ended up looking quite a bit different from teaser to full trailer (I note this because it's the same director). I'm actually more curious to see how long this movie is going to be. I mean, based on the trailer it seems like they're going to cover almost all of the major elements of the story which is a HUGE task. I'm more nervous that the movie is going to pale in comparison to the original, but unlike From Hell (where they decided to ignore most of the source material) it looks like they're just going to skim the surface. Who knows. It is worrisome though. To do it right they're going to need at least 2:30 to 3 hours.

You really got my hopes up with that 'first off' because it made me think you had like a whole list of things to say about that instead of just it's only a work-in-progress. It's like when my mum would call me out with a list of everything I did bad over that whole year but run out after like, one thing. 'You don't walk the DOG,

I just saw Dark Knight.

I knew -nothing- about this film going in, and thank god, because all the surprises were genuine surprises. It was pretty good! But it still doesn't dislodge the original Batman film from my heart.

On it's own merits though, I have a lot of good things to say about it. Some bad too, but it's definitely worth seeing.

What didn't you like about it. Personally I thought it was the best batman movie and probably will be until the next movie comes out.

fixed.

Wall-E and Dark Knight are the best pop movies of the decade, hands down.

WALL-E had a good first half, but then turned into every family-friendly film ever once the humans were reintroduced. You've seen one such movie you've seen them all.

I will be seeing The Dark Knight tomorrow.

It was still pretty subversive and neat for a pop film.

But no doubt the opening 40 minutes is where it soared.

As a happy ending family bonding romantic comedy, Dan In Real Life was way better than it needed to be. Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche make a better pairing than I ever would have guessed.

not a great movie, but if you think about the plot it's almost anti-love.

Ponyo on the Cliff is really quite excellent! It suffers from some of the same problems as Howl's Moving Castle, though; that is to say, Miyazaki seems to lack the stamina these days to follow one narrative through an entire movie, so the plot meanders and the story shifts and warps and turns into about three different movies before ending. Of course, you only really cared about the story you began watching. At one point it seems to turn into Panda KoPanda KoPanda!

It's good, though. Go and see it and just walk out when you think it's finished- don't wait for the film to end. I think my line directly after seeing it was 'bad in all the ways I expected, good in ways I could never have dreamed.'

Oh man! I just watched Primer and I want to watch it all over again. Right now. I'm not, I'm going to lasso my wife into watching it with me so that I can figure out what the hell is going on in this movie. I don't remember the last movie that I watched which I wanted to rewatch as soon as I finished it.

Also! Teeth was pretty good considering that I expected the movie to handle the themes and content poorly. I mean, it's still a B-movie, but it's a pretty entertaining b-movie.
