|
|
If we do, I couldn't see it!
Anyway, just watched Children of Men, pretty STUNNING movie, though that's not what I started this thread for.
I think like the last 40 movies I've picked, everyone dies! Like, seriously, no matter what I pick, 98% of the cast gets killed off. Usually I'm fine with this, but it's just been too many and I'm getting tired of watching people die.
SO, recommend me uplifting movies! I don't care how they're uplifting, just... uplifting. Good uplifting movies!
Don't even tell me what they're about, I'd rather be surprised. Just good, uplifting movies.
Also, ones you would find in a rather small video rental store.
Also, you have six hours to report back because that's when I get up to go to work.
Thanks! _________________

Hmm the last uplifting movie that I watched I guess would be The Producers? It was so totally great.
Also, Children of Men is possibly one of my most favourite movies to the max. The fact that it's an incredible piece of cinema would be great enough, but then it's filled with a hundred musical references and pieces of gorgeous urban decay, with more HL2 visual parallels than you could hope for. _________________

I watched Modern Times by Charlie Chaplin the other day. Awesome! Very uplifting. Or actually kind of melancholy depending on your perspective. |

Good choice.
I just saw Blade Runner for the first time last week. I thought the ending was vaguely uplifting. Hero running off with the girl, against all odds, etc. I'm talking the Final Cut, by the way. |

I think the intestine scene five to ten or so minutes later tops that but my favourite part by far is the one involving the cat. That bit has me in stitches even though I am quite partial to cats.

I love that film, too! I like how you can make out what every band member is contributing to the sound you hear. It's so much better than the shitty-ass lighting and editing on every other live band thing. |

Ok, so I watched a couple movies yesterday!
BLACK SNAKE MOAN
Pretty good movie, I really enjoyed the characters and the general direction the story went, plus Ricci got naked all the time which is a boon. Also, Justin Timberlake can act! I totally didn't recognise him until I saw the credits. Anyway, it unfortunately got a little too sentimental and some of the bigger problems felt like they were fixed a little too easy to really be believable. Plus there is this one part with Justin looking in through a window which made me laugh, it just looked so silly. Overall I enjoyed it, but suffers from to much... sentimentality? Is that a word? Ah, who cares.
THE BIG LEBOWSKI
This is a pretty great comedy, it's like a DUDE WHERE'S MY CAR for people who aren't morons. Well, it's obvious WHERE'S MY CAR was inspired heavily by this movie. It lost some steam towards the end, but over-all a pretty damn good comedy.
Also, DUDE WHERE'S MY CAR would make an excellent adventure game. I mean look at it! You start out with a simple objective; find your car. Then your trace your steps back to find it, finding clues in each scene as to where to go next, meeting crazy characters (often doing tasks for them) and what not! It would be perfect! I'm totally making an adventure game about recovering from a hang over. PATENT PENDING.
HERO
I missed the start of this (it was on SBS), I really loved the costumes, set design, fight scenes and spirit in this movie, but man, everything was just so over-dramatic, it got ridiculous and it was impossible to take it all seriously. They really needed to tone it down. But yeah, I watched it for the sets and fight scenes and all that, which I enjoyed. _________________

Lebowski remains one of my favourite comedies of all time, easily.
It's up there with The Burbs!
I'm watching Ghost Rider right now. It's not bad! Leagues better than Spidey 3. It might help that I've always liked the character. _________________

Really? I found Ghost Rider to be pretty boring. Actually, I found all the stuff from BEFORE he became a superhero (all the stuntman stuff) to be the most interesting part of the movie and pretty great. Everything after that, I found pretty meh... I think the bigest problem was that the fight scenes lacked real energy.
Also, I'm not a fan of Cage, so that didn't help.
Each to their own, though! I liked Spidey 3, after all. _________________

i went into the film expecting it to be rather bad, and it's quite a bit less bad than i expected, so it's been on the whole a pleasant experience! I tend to do this with movies I've seen really shitty previews for. it helps, unless the film is Ghost Ship. _________________

If you can find a copy of The Young Girls of Rochefort, I'd recommend it highly. Colossally happy swingin' French musical farce, with Catherine Deneuve and Gene Kelly. _________________ "Worlds turn the new machine to thee. To thee. Though, thine the new machine space."

Lately I've been watching lots of movies in the theatres, though only ones that I know will be good!
The Golden Compass was suprisingly great! I am a fan of the books and the trailer threw me off, but I am decidedly glad that I went. I thought the movie couldn't handled a scene or two better, or put more effort into conveying important emotions in those scenes, but very interesting narrative changes were made as well!
No Country for Old Men is the best comparative movie the Coen brothers have made since Fargo.
Now I will pop in DRAGON WARS D-WARS I think and shed a tear for Korea. _________________ * Me Profile * Me Blog * Me Photos * |

Amélie is shit and stereotypical garbage for sale to foreign countries, and that's coming from a Frenchman. If you have to see a Jean-Pierre Jeunet film, see A Very Long Engagement or The City of Lost Children. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

Dracko, I don't think anyone here is taking this thread that seriously.
While I agree with you on Amelie, I don't think it's any worse than most of the said shit and stereotypical garbage you get in foreign countries. It's not as though it's a poor film or terribly constructed, it's just ... well, fluff is the word I'd use. Harmless. Also, I find that City of Lost Children is pretty much the same, but with much better imagery. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

I believe he was looking for uplifting films, not necessarily substantial ones. And as I said, I think that counts. Candy floss though it may be.
Rather like American Beauty, it makes a great first impression. It's just on further viewing that its profound superficiality becomes clear.
If dude hasn't seen it, it's worth seeing once. _________________

Conversely, a couple of movies that confuse me for how well they continue to persist: the Wayne's World films. The second one, as I've discussed elsewhere, is kind of weird. It goes lengths to deconstruct the humor of the first movie, leaving the protagonists confused and empty-handed when nothing goes the way they expected it to. Kind of poignant, in a way. _________________

As far as hollywood films go this is about as good as you can expect honestly. I'm kinda shocked it got recognition. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”
