So I just, finally, got my copy of KOFXI. This thing has been drifting around the atmosphere for so long that I forgot what was in it, and what was new. Somehow I thought that Duck King and B.Jenet were in '03, and... well. Just generally: man, it was so long ago that I was actually anticipating this game. All of my memories are mixed up.

So. I remembered Oswald, of course. And... whatsername, the new loli Psycho Soldier to replace Bao. And Miss Boobula McPrimp, with the riding crop. (Yeah, see how out-of-touch I've become?) What I didn't remember was Shion.

For those not in the know, well.. this is Shion:

Hidden under that silk thingie is an enormous ass and thighs that are not quite as monstrous as Chun Li's. Voiced by a female actor, has very feminine movement. Seems to be the lover of the last boss guy. And... yeah, you see where this is all going.

I used the enclosed palette editor to change his garment to crimson and pants to khaki. All the more alluring!

Curious thing: in the last couple of games, KOF has ditched most of the old or ugly characters, and has been adding more and more gender-ambiguous or extremely pretty young people. They all are original, and they play well, and... well. I guess they're trying to make for easy cosplay or something. But good lord, was this really a good time to introduce a new function called "Blow Off"?

So we've got Shion. And we've got lovable old Ash Crimson, whose big hobby is nail art. Reaching back a bit, there's the fey yet ostensibly heterosexual Benimaru and the well-named and particularly awesome cross-dresser King (who plays superbly this time around, incidentally). Benimaru has now snagged Ash's luscious-locked 2003 partner Duo Lon as a teammate, though Ash (for the moment) retains his pink-shirted, tight-jeaned, bare-chested, peroxide-blond friend Shen Woo. Just for yuks, Kyo and Iori are on the same team, with Kyo fetishist Shingo as a third wheel.

Then, hey, one of the sub-bosses is (again) Rugal's waifish, misunderstood son Adelheid. With a girl's name, dangly red earrings and lipstick, and chest-clenching webbed outfit. He has a kitten. His sister tells him what to do.

So that's the current state of The King of Fighters. Elsewhere in time and space, we have a few old favorites and a few more recent introductions.

Cuilan

Bridget

Poison

And then we've the comparably conservative Zangief and Eagle, who... just happen to be gay. And all right, fair enough.

The big reason, I'll be frank, why I was disappointed to see Capcom Fighting All-Stars scrapped -- besides it looking pretty entertaining, in a Max Impact kind of way -- is that it was to include Poison as one of its major characters. And she was to have multiple costumes! And new moves. I think the only time she's been playable is in that Saturn-based fighting game that's supposed to be terrible. Has anyone played that? (I wonder if she'll make it into Street Fighter IV?)

I know I'm missing a lot; I'm just pulling on my own somewhat out-of-date reservoir here. Wasn't there someone interesting in one of the recent Samurai Spirits games? Another boss of some sort?

Ever since Guilty Gear, it seems the genre is positively steeped in the transsexual, the cross-attired, the ambiguous, and the generally queer. And I've been having trouble keeping track. Brandon brings this topic up every now and then, but I think we might now have enough of a critical mass to put together a crossover fighting game roster to frighten soccer moms from Georgia all the way to Idaho.

Help me out on this, guys! This is vitally important!

In Japan, tiny feminine characters are viewed as sexy and manly, and huge buff guys who are obviously men, are viewed as gay and ugly.

Different places, different tastes.

Edit: Also, stop calling Poison "she".

I thought Poison was a transvestite.

Edit: Yeah.

"There is an ongoing conspiracy behind Poison, because in the official story of the Japanese version of Final Fight, Poison is a transexual, yeah... a dude... but that fact was censored for the American version, and she didn't even appear on the home versions of the game because "It would be wrong to beat up a girl." Haha... Ohh how far video games have come. Anyhow, her card backstory in Card Fighters Clash DS confirms that she is actually a "he." Ohh how far censorship in America has come."

From Fighters Generation by the way.

She's a transsexual. Purportedly she officially had her operation somewhere around the time of that Saturn fighting game.

Anyway, there is a certain etiquette here, regarding pronouns.

That's interesting about CFC DS, though! I forgot about it. If I were to just go and order a copy, would I get the "fixed" version now?

Did the DS card fighters even come out in the US? I'd imagine if you imported it, and could read Japanese you'd probably see the info. I don't think Japan has the problem with the whole transgender deal, it's just America.

Yeah, it infamously came out here with a bug that kept the game from being completable. After months and months, SNK got around to replacing cartridges by mail. I'm wondering if that version is available in stores now.

Cuilan is an android. That makes it A-OK.

It also makes sense of that Saigado doujinshi.

So how come they're allowed to use Capcom characters like Poison?

Also, I know it's not ok to be attracted to cartoon characters but I really wish Whip was a real person.

It's the combination of her very girlish features with her uniform which is super ruffntuff. Hott.

Oh, no! This isn't all KoF. I just let my mind wander. Though she is in SVC Chaos, and she even has dialog with the SNK cast. She shows up with Hugo and... Bao, for some reason. Hm.

Speaking of, this is almost relevant to the thread.

Good news for you: Whip is a clone. So who knows where she might turn up!

I'm sure the fixed ones may be sold out in the wild, but I'm not sure of how to be certain without cracking open the box. I only know what the carts themselves look like...

Glitched

Fixed

I don't know if there's a way to check manufacture date on a DS game box, but the fixed versions were being distributed towards the end of June 2007.

Our age of consent is 16 which probably seems pretty liberal to you guys, but in some places in Europe it's like 13 or something. The British tabloids would call that a 'LICENCE FOR PAEDOS'

A lot of US states have 16 as their age of consent. Thanks for being yet more proof that all euros are condescending assholes when it comes to their betters (Americans).

STFU, Wigwam

Oh yeah, so I was going to ask where was the bit which borders on pederasty?

Speaking of which I just watched Mars Attacks, I hope Natalie Portman was old enough for me to find her attractive in that movie because DAMN.

This is actually a thread about building an entire game out of sexually ambiguous fighting game characters. Because there are many of them now.

If it actually matters, most of them are supposed to be adults! Poison, King, Shion.

Fighters need more manly men. Like Jeffry from VF, or ikari before Leona. Stone cold killers. Androgyny is nice too, but it's either that or ridiculous moemoe bullshit these days. What's wrong with being a man?

Man, and I was thinking that fighting games needed more small children, like from the card game Lunch Money.

This is the best thread ever.

Also, I didn't know Shion was a man! Color me shocked.

SNK should just make a DS game about dating these characters until you realize they're men and then have to defeat them in combat.

yeah, and there should be a snkvsggx game where there's a sub thing where you date these characters, then realize that they're men, then continue dating them happily because YOU'RE ONE OF THEM TOO

that would be a great game that i would fully endorse!
