I've seen this term appear more than a few times, and I still haven't been able to get a clear idea of its meaning from context. Can anyone help?

It's something that is a magnificent disaster. A game that tries really hard, that you can tell had a shitload of heart behind it, but that in the end just never quite worked, but worked to show enough of those ideas and heart to win some love is a glorious trainwreck.

I thought a glorious trainwreck was something that is very bad, but still incredibly enjoyable

A glorious trainwreck is a game which is simultaneously ludicrous and visionary; a game whose mere existence causes you react in amazement and disbelief. A poke through the Trainwreck Gallery and the Trainspotting forum on Glorious Trainwrecks Dot Com should give you an idea.

If you find yourself saying things like:
You probably have a glorious trainwreck on your hands.

Usually the term comes up here in conjunction with the site, which is not only based around the premise that these games are awesome but that people should be making more. And once you throw out requirements like polish, solid game mechanics, good art, and coherent storytelling, and add to the mix easy-to-use game-making tools, well! It turns out that an environment that encourages total reckless creative abandon is a pretty great place to hang out. We have a monthly two-hour game jam which is pretty fun, and we even managed to somehow create over 100 games in a single weekend for the TIGSource B-Game Competition a while back, which was pretty much one of the top five events of my entire life. (Some lunatic posted nearly 500 screenshots to Mobygames.)

Does that help?

Yeah, that's my interpretation. Something that is so balls-out insane that on a level it doesn't matter that it's almost impossible that anything good could have come out of the idea, because the fact of the game's existence alone is amazing and wonderful. The more ambitious, the better. The more ill-advised, the better.

Illbleed is an example. In theory, it would only need a few tweaks to work pretty well. Somehow I don't think the brains that thought it up would have thought to make it playable, though. And it is so very wonderful.

I tried doing Portal in Klik and Play and it crashed and burned before it even achieved trainwreck status.

It's the polar opposite of a Fantasy Heartbreaker, though it is endearing in much the same ways.

I think we need a remake on the Wii. That uses the balance board.

I've never tracked down my own copy of the game, though I did borrow it for a while.

I really should have this. It's one of my favorite games in the same way that Dr. Chaos is.

Climax Entertainment's other brilliant Survival Horror game Blue Stinger fits this pretty well. It's a shame the producer for both Illbleed and Blue Stinger (I think he did the scenario for Landstalker as well) died.

This is perfect and describes everything I needed to know. Thanks a TON!
