dhex suggested Filezilla as well and so far it appears to be exactly what I needed.

I've been using FileZilla for years. I'd go so far as to say that it's super rad. And free. Super rad and free.

i use ftp commander. i'm sure it's not close to ideal, though.

Fast, lightweight, open-source, easy to use, free.

Couldn't recommend it more highly.
