Holy crap.
I just played the demo for Codemasters' Dirt for the 360 and it's far and away the best looking, best playing, most physically accurate racing game I've ever seen. You can run into any wall and it will actually deform it realistically. Dust cakes onto the back of your car as you drive through the dirt. Your car slowly falls apart as you run into walls and other cars. The menus look better than anything Ridge Racer's ever done. Fucking awesome.
It's totally impressive and comes totally out of left field. I tried the Forza demo yesterday, and when you compare the two all I can say is that Microsoft should be ashamed.
Here's a picture and some links.

I've always wanted to play one of these stunning-looking games. I'm going to nab the demo this weekend. Is it easy enough for a non-autobot like myself to pick up? |

Well you push the R button to go and the L button to stop. Aside from that I don't know what to tell you. I haven't won any races yet because I always intentionally run into walls to see what happens. It's neat like that.

Is this the American re-branding of the next Colin McRae rally title? |

Apparently in Europe it's called Colin McRae: Dirt and in the US it's called Dirt.
Very rebranded indeed!
Lestrade: You should definitely download the Forza demo first as a frame of reference. The difference in quality is astounding.

It sounds like the PC demo installs Starforce, so I'll be skipping that. If the full US release doesn't have Starforce, I might consider eventually picking it up. : \
The damage modelling does look nice though. I never really like when racing games don't include any sort of visible damage to cars. It really cuts into the realism when you have a high speed multi-car pileup, only to have everyone bouncing around in perfect condition like toys. |

Yeah, it makes a huge difference. What really impresses me about Dirt isn't the damage to the cars though, it's the damage to the environment. You can hit pretty much anything and instead of bouncing off you actually dent it, scatter it, move it, or a combination of those things. My only complaint is that in certain areas driving far enough off of the road causes you to instantly be warped back to the track. If I want to drive off and bang shit up I should have the option!

Does the ground reshape itself as you drive over it? I think the new sega rally is supposed to do that. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

Not sure really, none of the tracks in the demo are very muddy. The stuff you knock into the road from the roadside definitely stays in place on subsequent laps though.

This reminds me of a N64 racer called Mud Monsters (which I think was canned) which was to feature the most realistic mud/dirt physics ever. _________________

I came home to find my roommate playing this demo. After being blown away by the graphics and slick menus while watching him crash into walls I stole the controller so that I could show him how to race rally tracks. Being a big fan of Rallisport Challenge for the XBOX, there is a good chance I will play the hell out of this demo. |
