as some of you are probably aware, there used to be a wikipedia entry on the gamer's quarter. some time ago it was deleted with the kind of snark one can only get from the kind of armchair arbiter who trolls wikipedia for fodder for an itchy click-finger.

one of the points raised by our little magistrate is that the page was posted by shaper, our editor-in-chief, and thus could be construed as a vanity page. as such, i am asking YOU, the gamer's quarter reader and supporter, to build what will be

THE GLORIOUS SECOND GAMER'S QUARTER WIKIPEDIA ENTRY

also i know shit about editing wikipedia. so what should you consider adding to this grand new wikipedia entry? a summary of the magazine's history and mission statement, i suppose. a list of staff members, a list of back issues and their themes, possibly a list of contents. check the entry on insert credit's wiki (unfortunately out of date).

you might mention that staffers from the gamer's quarter have gone on to write for other publications like retrogamer uk, play magazine, the escapist, and games on deck!

and of course: references. they also deleted us for not citing enough references / not being enough internet famous / not being a character on star trek, so here are a bunch of mentions of the gamer's quarter on the internet that you can sprinkle across our entry to spice it with reference:

http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1504242/20050616/index.jhtml?headlines=true (mtv - this one's important!)
http://gamedev101.blogspot.com/search?q=gamer%27s+quarter (gamedev101)
http://www.gamespite.net/verbalspew/archives/archive_2006-m06.php#e140 (jeremy parish - probably more of these)
http://www.insertcredit.com/archives/000603.html (insert credit)
http://nikthegreek.tblog.com/ (tblog)
http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1555633/20070326/index.jhtml (mtv - AGAIN!)

there are probably many more! use your imagination! also research!

here are some wikipedia entries that mention the gamer's quarter:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heather_Campbell (faithless)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.U.L.E. (m.u.l.e.)

there are plenty of entries that are ripe for links to a the gamer's quarter wikipedia entry, too: seiklus, for instance.

between all these things i think we have a solid foundation for an airtight, non-deletable wikipedia entry! so i am asking you, readers: your magazine has given you its blood, sweat and tears. now is time to give back to your magazine. build us a wikipedia entry that we can be proud of. a wikipedia entry for the ages.

What exactly are you hoping to achieve by this? Wikipedia is a horrible wasteland populated solely by autistics and pedophiles. Engaging in an internet slapfight over whether or not The Gamer's Quarter is worthy of inclusion strikes me as a complete waste of time, given that all of the information you mention is available, here, on the internet, on a webpage conveniently titled gamersquarter.com.

it's not so much about giving wikipedia's little dictators five across the eyes (though i wouldn't deny that that's part of it) as it is about fixing a conspicuous absence. wikipedia is a good resource, even if the people running it are only interested in their own authority (and the continuity of forever knight), and there's no reason a search of the gamer's quarter should turn up nothing. i would like someone browsing wikipedia to be able to find information on our magazine if she's looking for it. there's no reason she shouldn't be able to.

Why would you want someone to get their information processed through wikipedia when they could get it directly from the source? You're playing directly into their hands.

i was sort of poking fun at the soviet onion's tone.

seriously, i don't think that wikipedia is ultimate judge of worth on the internet, and i don't feel as though the gamer's quarter or anyone needs approval from them to keep on doing the wonderful things that we do. i do, however, like wikipedia as a practical resource - and i think it's silly that we don't have a page on there.

at any rate, i'm not planning on creating one, nor is any other staffer. if a reader is interested in doing so, that's just fine. that's what this thread is about.

considering wikipedia is the number one hit on almost all google searches these days, it's silly not to get something together.

it's a better starting point than google, really.

I'm just saying that you're not going to be able to change wikipedia for the better. Somebody's going to end up spending time and effort for nothing.

why? because some douchefuck might delete it again? i think hepping the references will help tremendously, and if i weren't drowning in bullshit right now i'd help out more (i can probably edit whatever gets done).

anarchy is ugly, dude.

I don't see how, if you agree that wikipedia is under the control of Strike Force Asperger's, you can still think that jumping through their hoops is worthwhile. It's the exact opposite of an anarchy.

Even if you find the people who generally make up the controlling group of Wikipedia to be, well, questionable, that doesn't mean that leveraging WP to help people find a site is giving into "them" or performing for "their" pleasure.

I mean, Jerkcity has an entry, ferchrissakes.

Just remember to apply for undeletion instead of writing an article. Any article that has been deleted cannot be recreated without an application for undeletion. There are assholes who check thhis for all article creations.

I just read that one an hour ago! I was listening to Stephen's interview with Tom Kim on gamasutra. I like what he has to say.

Both sides of the coin. Sucks for anyone who is not a denizen of the wikipedia and does not know if a given article has ever been created since the new article will get delete and any further attempts at undeletion have to show improvement over the best versions.

I admin the Angry Nintendo Nerd forums and his fans do not get that. To give perspective his original article was deleted for lack of notabilty, and a new article was written months later citing his appearance on MTV. That got deleted immediately because it wasn't an application for undeletion. Subsequent applications for undeletion that mention him being on television are disregarded since his article was deleted for notability and MTV appearances were in those articles.

Angry Nintendo Nerd fans have made a precedent of MTV being not notable for pop culture a part of wikipedia because of their stuff. So I'd say the admins are just as much of assholes as the people submitting articles no matter how it may make me smile to know MTV is considered not a notable for pop culture anymore.
