video of contra 4, featuring jeremy parish and friends. you can almost make out the music. the game seems to be a throwback to the older contra games, abandoning the elaborate setpieces of hard corps and shattered soldier that i am actually in love with. it looks like it could work though.

I really like what they did with the tower boss to the point where I'm really surprised that Konami never did it themselves.

Ok, I'm sick and tired of the constant "Hard Corps is too hard" whining from people. Why do they propagate this lie? US version of Hard Corps is easier than Alien Wars! There, I said it. Fuck off whiny boys!

i think the complaint is usually that it's more memorization-heavy than the earlier games. and though i love hard corps dearly, i could see myself enjoying a looser contra game.

People who complain about Hard Corps being difficult haven't really played Contra before. That or they aren't man enough for Blast Processing™.

I don't find C3:Alien Wars any less mem-heavy.

There's definitely less stuff to memorize in C3 just because so much of its level design consists of enemies spawning at random at the edges of the screen instead of boss fights. The fact that two of its stages consist of overhead view shenanigans doesn't hurt, either.

Zombie Smashers is free game of the day for three more hours!

It's horrible yet I couldn't stop palying the demo! It's like RCR, but with zombies and blood and badly drawn art!

Play import GC games on your wii without a freeloader. INTERESTING.

Too bad it doesn't work in import wii games.

Nights: Journey of Dreams gameplay trailer

Looks pretty good! even though that video sounds like a commercial for a straight-to-DVD Disney movie.

IN A WORLD. The Disney comment is spot on. Now I guess I better get cracking with the original, eh?

That MK video was up somewhere else about a week ago, I think. It gets me frothing but I noticed that the gameplay switches from what looks like the SNES version to the arcade version (watch the health bars). I imagine it will be more like the SNES port because of the DS's resolution. Portable, online Mortal Kombat = love. (I better practice; I got my ass handed to me quite judiciously a couple of weeks ago over XBLA.)

The GC import trick is interesting too. I don't have an import game to try it with, but now I want to. Those Japanese GC cases have always been freaking awesome.

Xbox 360 backwards compatibility update!

I'm very excited; they've finally included Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams and Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil! I can't wait to play SH2 on my 360 (no, seriously).

It's funny how seeing the Xbox games I own on that list makes me want to start them over again on the 360. Like Outrun 2.

According to Capcom the new Lost Planet map packs will soon be available for free:

"For our Xbox 360 community of Lost Planet fans, the four maps in PC Map Pack #1 are currently available as Map Pack #1 and #2 in the Xbox 360 version of Lost Planet. However, in conjunction with the PC update on July 20th, all these maps will also be made available for free download on Xbox Live Marketplace. In addition, Xbox 360 players can expect a new patch addressing connectivity which will be available around the end of this month."

In case you don't know what this means, Microsoft's policy on Free DLC is that if it gets released on another platform for free then they won't charge for it (another example is Rainbow Six, and the two DLC packs were included in the PS3 release so they became free downloads).

When Gears of War first got shown off at E3 for the PC version a few people around me were pissed and I stated that it was actually brilliant that they were doing this. Because EPIC now has the game out on another "system" with content MS is charging for on the 360 they can finally release this stuff for free.

If Microsoft doesn't shape up soon about this they're going to end up with publishers releasing higher quality versions of games for other systems and the 360 version will be perminantly tagged as "gimped." I could forsee this becoming a larger problem down the road.

How does the rest of your post lead to this assertion? Are you saying they're not going to release DLC on the Xbox at all because they won't be allowed to charge for it in the future? That's not quite right. Publishers actually want to release free content but MS won't let them do so at the moment because they don't want people to get used to the idea that digital content should be free. This is just a nice way of allowing publishers to get out of that policy. Also, if they're going to give the content away for free in other versions they might as well give it away for free everywhere. No need to screw over the people who actually pay full price for games to get them early by charging them for stuff that people who hold off get for free.

Here's something odd: The "special exclusive new Goblin bonus playable character" from the Limited Edition Spiderman 3 on PS3 just got released as $6 downloadable content on the PS3. Pretty shady that the "exclusive" character can now be accessed by anyone!

I mean that if people have other systems they're going to say "I'll just wait untill the (non-360) version is released so that I can get all the bonus content free." Or, rather than buy the DLC when it comes out people will start waiting until it's included with the (non-360) version of the game. This frame of mind hurts 3rd party developers as they need to keep their fans happy, and like the EPIC battle about Gears and how DLC should be "free" you've probably got more companies also arguing these things.

Avary not going to write Silent Hill 2 movie. In case you forgot this guy is usually considered a good writer with films like Pulp Fiction under his belt.

Ok, two really awesome things today!

First is the anniversary Hudson clock that comes out September 5th(?) at about $17:

Second is a story that dhex will love about japan being full of crazies:

Canned Dogs wrote:
Back in early May, a player on the MMORPG Shin Megami Tensei IMAGINE had spent 100,000 yen (830 USD) on their newly introduced lottery but failed in an attempt to win a set of clothes that resembled the uniform from Persona 2.

He soon complained to Cave for not properly labeling the uniforms as a rare item in the lottery as it was listed among all the normal prizes with no indication that it was so rare that it could not be won even after 1,000 tries in the lottery.

Cave admitted that they made a mistake in not labelling the uniforms as a rare item and changed the list, but they replied that any money that was spent by the players was their own responsibility and not that of the company.

The man tried to sue the company soon after regarding this matter, but the case was thrown out of court early this month due to lack of evidence in proving that the company was attempting to scam the customers. So in protest, the man burns his own face. (??????????)

His blog can be found here. The latest post has a picture of his face, so don’t look if you don’t want to see it.

These megaten fans ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

hey, gamejew's mario opera is on itunes now. if you've only ever heard the version where jonathan mann, heroically, performs all the parts himself, this is a pretty good opportunity to hear the full cast recording.

he's also written an amazing musical review of bloody wolf.
