What is your favourite game of the not "next-gen" generation? ie. not includign X-Box 360, Wii etc.

For me it is Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, despite the annoying flawed fighting sequences. I just love the aesthetics, fairy-tale charm and jumping-puzzle gameplay.

It's pretty crowded at the top, but I'll say Pikmin if I have to pick just one.

I'm going to cop out and go with the short answer since I'm at GDC, but Silent Hill 2.

It is also currently my most replayed long-form game, and possibly my favorite game of all time.

I was going to say that, but then I remembered Rhythm Tengoku.

So, yeah, Rhythm Tengoku.

If one has never played a Silent Hill game, would 2 be the best starting point? Or would it be better to play the 1st one beforehand?

Yes.

The only SH game that NEEDS you to have played a previous one to enjoy it is 3. And that would be 3 is a sequel to 1. So, you can play 1, 2, or 4 without playing a previous SH game. 2 is a very good place to start.

If I just played SH2 for the first time this past weekend, and wow, that was awesome and easily ranks as one of the single greatest gaming experiences I've had any generation.

And it works beautifully if you haven't played any of the other SH games. I still have to play the sequels (and the first), but I'm afraid that doing will diminish some of SH2's brilliant psychological horror. I mean, I wanted James to have made Pyramid Head up in his mind, not because it's the town's executioner or something.

Nana, play Romancing SaGa for the PS2. If you stick through it beyond the traditional two hours of confusing SaGa-type gameplay, I promise that there is a very good chance that you will believe in love again.

Best game of the current generation? I have trouble answering that, because all games have flaws, and sometimes to be good they have to have those flaws, like an action movie can't have too serious or complex a plot before the mass loses balance and spins out of control.

Most important? Devil May Cry 3. Most important personally? Gungrave Overdose. Most fantastic? Steambot Chronicles. Game that made me cry? Choro Q. Best overall? If I had to give an answer, then Phantom Brave. Most potential? Makai Kingdom. Biggest fuckup? Makai Kingdom.

PH will always be what James used as a punishment in his mind. It just happens to also be a historical item. The canon games have left PH alone (though the film uses him, unfortunatly).

And, even after playing all the other ones they are good, but not quite at the level of SH2. SH3 is pretty terrible in the sense of what makes SH2 so great.

SH3 is pretty great for what it is, though -- a schlocky tense gore-filled action game. if you manage to play it on the pc, it looks 'n' sounds very nice too.

i more or less missed out on the ps2 entirely. i may have to vote for silent hill 2 as well, but i think i spent more time with wind waker (such a comfort game)

I see! That's a relief. I was afraid they'd try to "de-mythologize" the game and explain everything away as being literal.

I think I might check SH3 out, anyway. Are the game mechanics tightened up? It's hard to imagine SH2's clunky engine being used for a more action-based game.

Yes, but they're not quite as good as SH4.

Honestly, you can just skip to SH4. Right over SH3

I've thought about this, and I guess I'll have to say Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat. It's a great platformer, and the levels are short and sweet how I like them so that you can play over and over to try to perfect your score. The graphics are absolutely fantastic. There's an outer space level. There are lots of hidden bananas/secret areas. The simple bongo controls are a lot of fun give the game just a little extra something. It really comes together such that my only complaint is I haven't found a way to view the "Try This" videos I've unlocked by beating levels.

Honorable Mentions: Viewtiful Joe, Halo, F-Zero GX, Ico, Katamari Damacy.

I'll go out on a limb and recommend a few more then:

Deus Ex
God Hand
Guitaroo Man
Half-Life 2
Killer 7
Metal Gear Solid 2&3
Rez
Shadow of the Colossus
Silent Hill 4

While it's a short list, these are my Top 10 Picks of the current-gen (6th Generation based on academic types). Silent Hill 2 is at the top of the list and these are just alphabetical.

I hate to sound like a pretentious ass, but a lot of games in the first half of these consoles’ life were really bad. Many of the games below these which are “good” are not really doing anything for the medium or expression of games (or not too well). I tried to go with a list of games that I would feel comfortable handing to a non-gamer to show them what the state of the medium is in a snapshot.

I'm confused as to whether DS is officially current or next-gen. If it is eligible then I'd add Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training due to the way it uses the DS and tracks your progress, and the multiuser drawing tasks.

I'm not entirely sure I understand the nomenclature here. Once a generation of consoles comes out and the previous generation is more or less deprecated, isn't it current-gen?

Anyway, this thread makes me realize that I'm completely behind on current-gen latter-gen games. I should really get a PS2 sometime!

Deus Ex is definitely up there. So is Rhythm Tengoku, but I'm a bit loath to call either my absolute favorite.

Ok, just to clear up the nomenclature a bit I’ll go with something that seems to have it’s head on straight even if it is Wikipedia:

Fist generation includes some of the more obscure items of games. Mostly this is limited to the Odyssey, PONG, Coleco Telstar, and a few clones.

Second generation games are what most people consider the beginning of console games. Things like the Atari 2600, Fairchild Channel F, Intellivision, ColecoVision, Vectrex, and Sega SG-1000. There were others to be sure, but these are the most common.

After the great gaming crash of 1983 we arrive at the third generation of games which is what most people who are gamers harvest their great fields of nostalgia. It’s also commonly spoke of as the 8-Bit Generation. These consoles include: NES, Sega Master System, Commodore 64, Atari 7800. This is also the first generation to include handhelds: Brick Gameboy, Atari Lynx, and Sega Game Gear.

The fourth generation is usually named the 16-bit generation. This includes the consoles: TG16/PCE, Genesis/MD, Neo Geo, SNES, and Phlips CD-i. It also seems to lump in the Sega CD and 32X. In this the Lynx and Game Gear carry over, but added is the GB Pocket, Sega Nomad, and Turbo Express/LTGT.

With the advent of 3D approaching we get into the fifth generation where I feel like the largest “second wave” of gamers comes from. This includes some obscurities (which are better off that way) and some major hitters: Nintendo 64, Playstation, Atari Jaguar, Sega Saturn, Amiga CD-32, and 3DO. This also has the carry over 32X addon and the new (jp only) 64DD. With this the inclusion of some new and boosed handhelds come: Game.com, Neo Geo Pocket, Wonderswan, Gameboy Color/Light.

While it started out as the 128 bit generation with the Dreamcast, the Sixth Generation of games is what is being discussed in this thread. Consoles include: Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox. Simple enough! Anyways, there is a ton of freaking handhelds this generation, so it may as well be called the generation of the hands: NGP Color, Wonderswan Crystal, GP32, Gameboy Advance, Zodiac, NGage, GBA SP, NGage QD, GB Micro, and Gizmondo.

The seventh generation is really the “current-gen.” The consoles include: Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii. The handhelds for this gen are: Nintendo DS, DS Lite, Playstation Portable, Tiger Telematics Gizmondo, and GamePark GP2X.

Hopefully this helps in some of the confusion. I assumed that this thread entailed the console side of the 6th generation.

The love for SH2 will always remain a mystery to me.

otherwise i'd have to say hl2 or fear, for various reasons.

HL2 got on my list because of the Xbox port. FEAR got a 360 port, so it's not 6th gen.

Did anyone really like playing Resident Evil 4? Or Godhand? Or Killer 7? Or Metal Gear Solid 2? 3? Or oh man... why are there so many awesome games?

The other day I told my friend that the greatest videogame console ever was the Playstation 2. I think I was being serious.

god hand is probably the best original (i.e. not counting taito memories) game on the playstation 2.

most of my favorites from this past generation are on the gameboy advance, though.

for sheer breadth of excellent home ports of fantastic arcade games, the pc-engine's library wins.

however, taito memories.

The difference between the two is interesting.

I agree that I dislike the PS2 as a game machine... besides the ugly "fin" design, I will always resent Sony for requiring a multitap for > 2 players.

There's some neat stuff that happened on the system, stuff that as a Nintendo fanboy I wish had happened to GC: Katamari of course (esp. after the rumors of how it was first prototyped on the GC, though I have to admit the PS2 might have a better controller for it), Eye Toy, Magic Pengel. And Guitar Hero has more chops than Donkey Konga.

It's also interesting to note that most of the "library" that makes it great is third party development (I can only think of two Sony games that are part of that great library).

Also, Dess, while I agree with you on principal, I have to say that it would be better just to get the real games in mame/Jamma board. So while there are many fantastic arcade style games, and they are good ports for their time, there are better ways to play those games with the use of modern technology.

Which two?

At first I wanted to say "So?" -- I mean in general it makes more sense to support the individual game than the company. (Which ties in with a certain strong ambivalence about the Marioverse.)

But I guess there are some implications of that for this generation; if Sony fails to rally the 3rd party troops this time around, there's less reason for loyalty than for the, say, Nintendo fanboy.

Also it's odd: not making the best system, not making the best games, but still being the dominant player and thus attracting more of the quirky stuff on the side.

Well, it's not like Sony made only dross. The Ico/SotC team was internal after all and the original Mark of Kri was quite nice when it came out.

My theory is that it's the high-profile third-party games that really put Sony over the top. Final Fantasy X, GTA3 and Devil May Cry all came out at roughly the same time and were a jump-start for sales. And once the PS2 had a lead, it became the console to develop for because since it had the biggest install base, it was how niche titles would make money. And once you get the niche titles accumulating, etc. etc.

Interesting trio, because they cover such a wide range; I have little interest in 2 of those, but one of them has grabbed me by the intellectual nuts...

for sheer breadth of excellent home ports of fantastic arcade games, the pc-engine's library wins.

Every import PS2 game I own is an arcade port of some kind. I don't know if this is relevant or not.

Don't forget MGS2!

Anyways, yeah, with DQ9 going to the DS, FF going to the DS, a lot of Capcom support on the 360 and Wii (umbrella chronicles), you have a lot of the Big Guns of the PS2 moving away from Sony. If sony loses their third party support they're screwed.

Also, Microsoft has done a pretty smart thing with grabbing the original creators of FF from Mistwalker (right?) and having them make more original content. Videogames need breaths of fresh air, especially during new consoles. Sony is doing the least of all three consoles for new IPs. On top of that they're the most expensive, and bloated of the consoles. It's going to be tough to do what the PS2 did.
