Victor Vroom's expectancy theory seems to be extremely relevant to the field of videogames even though it is mainly about the field of work. Because, it deals with motivation, and how people compare the expected rewards with the work needed to get it.

It is something that we all do, we consider what we think we will get out of playing a videogame. With the hoops we have to jump through to progress in the game.
