So now I'm playing as Grain, son of Groin, the aforementioned previous best run. These dwarven fighters are kinda nice after all the casters I've played, being a lot more durable and able to equip tons of gear for resistances. Plus this guy found a rod of smiting early on, which is an amazing item for a fighter to have.

I just claimed the serpentine rune again, but there was another visitor in Naga City tonight: Margery, equipped with a demon whip of distortion and accompanied by an escort of hell knights. With Okawaru's favor and all my healing potions I managed to pull through, and one of the hell knights left a flaming battleaxe -- perfect! Now I'm perfectly equipped to deal with hydras, and next I'm off to the Swamp.

Officially my best to date. Bought it after slaughtering three hydras in a row to komodo dragons (which I'd been wiping the floor with earlier - with my scimitar, sadly). I skipped the Orcish Mines to tackle the Lair which (I'd heard, from ... somewhere) is apparently easier? Having seen as much of both as I have, next time I get a melee type of this steamrolling quality going I'm gonna hit the mines first, go back and buy the legendary platemail I saw in one of FIVE stores on floor 6.

(Probably never happen again though.)

I got cocky and my berserk wore off. Sad Would've been fine too, if I'd switched to my vamp axe. Anyway, scored 82 points shy of 26,000 with Blythe. Found a total of four artifacts: the worn boots and amulet, and a robe which would've been decent if I were shooting for evasion (cursed -3 robe of the onion, resists magic and had some other resistance... with some enchant armours it would've been decent - and I had plenty of those) and also a completely useless suit of leather armour: +0 armour of Supple Strength. No bonuses at all. What a great artifact!

Also:

WHY MUST FATE TAUNT THE MINOTAUR BY LITTERING THE DUNGEON FLOORS WITH BIZARRE AND SHINY HELMETS?!
(it was cursed anyway)

oh! squidlarkin (and anyone else who's been there): How are the Swamp and Snake Pits? I kept seeing stairs down into them from the Lair, and felt momentary temptation to swerve from my single-minded plunge through animal hell.

yeah, note i gave up completely on axes and started working on polearms and long blades with Blythe there.

Trog saw fit to gift me a +4/0 spear of venom and then a freaking sword of +awesome vs demons, so I said hey, my raging bloodthirsty deity of killing doesn't want me hacking with axes anymore.

Still, I have noticed my characters with the armour skill tend to get more robes and my characters with dodging tend to get more heavy armours.

don't take the gods too seriously, as they're all mostly some variation of homicidal maniac/bad foster parent.

Yeah, but they give you POWERS, whereas bad foster parents just give you bruises and sundry complexes.

hey now but overcoming those obstacles are powers in their own right.

also bad parents very rarely animate one's toys to try and murder you.

rarely.

How much warning did you have of your impending doom? That scroll of fear and/or any of your means of teleport could maybe have saved the day. (I only don't mind dying in these games because I've usually learned something from it.)

If you're poison resistant, heavily armored and know not to fight large groups in the open, the Snake Pits aren't so bad. Be prepared to take a few hits from Iskenderon's Mystical Blast, and don't underestimate the grey snakes... I haven't played many berserkers, so I'm not sure how you'd sustain your rage through the HUGE gang of nagas guarding the rune. I just lure 'em back to a safe location and fight one at a time, leaving a mountain of corpses like so:

Swamp is worse in a way because you're forced to fight in the open, but poison resist and a reliable means of dispatching hydras are all you really need to worry about.

hah, wow. That's pretty beautiful.

The problem with berserking is it seems like it's dependent on your standing with Trog - you have a chance for your rage to "heighten", which... I honestly don't know what it does since it often seems to happen shortly before it wears off for me. And.. honestly you don't get a lot of warning before it does.

I'd have used the scroll of fear except I didn't have it identified at the time. Sad Ironically I did have the immolation ones figured out, so I probably would've saved myself some time if I'd just read two right off. But you're right, I learned a lot of what not to do wrong with that character.

Finally experiencing the "chessthings" sensation. This time it looks like Phantom mask (or bondage mask, your call). Nothing special in there but a couple of scorpions.

I really should stop trying my clothes on before I decide I'm sold. :(((((

Still kicking though. Trying to decide if that pile of dex is worth the enchant armour scrolls it'd take to "fix" the boots, or if I should just cross my fingers and hope for something better. Right now I have a whopping 1 AC, and I could learn that ice armour spell to get an extra... 6? plus I'm a stealth class, so it could be really much worse.

So anyone try the patch that puts Crawl on a hex grid instead of a square grid? What impact does it have on the game and would you reccomend it?

I don't know anything about hex, but I know tile crawl has an isometric mode.

If that's what you're asking about, it's pretty cool. I prefer "flat" because it jives more with the character and npc sprites, but iso has very clear targeting reticles and other features that are nice.

I downloaded and installed the package. The game works fine, but the sprites for my character don't display completely. Is there a way to fix this problem? I'm running the game on OS X with the X11 and libpng packages installed.

First post after playing the awesomeness that is Crawl, on my best character ever. Demonspawn Fighter made it all the way to Dlvl 15 before a shapeshifter owned my face in, so I ran away....then drowned Sad Seriously, it shifted to a storm dragon, breathed, stone giant, tossed a rock at me, and I plunged from 98 to 15 hp. I thought that I'd better go. Lol.

But what I'm most proud of....look at the AC. With that scythe, I was virtually untouchable. I can't wait to bring up another Demonspawn Fighter that gets the black scales Mutation. Smile

I was rolling through the vaults until I happened upon an ice dragon who started to rape me with breath (notice no resistances) and I had to flee with a scroll of teleportation, which promptly placed me right in the middle of two nameds, a yaktaur, a hill giant, a giant amoeba, and an orc warrior. gg Sad

Wish I had wielded that Ancus. Seems like I would have smushed face with it. That greatsword of electricity though...mmmm.

Once again, I've found the key to survival is to have a ridiculously high AC. If you can as a fighter, you can go far.

Yeah, I tend to do either really well or especially poorly as demonspawn. My best ever was actually a minotaur berserker, and I agree hands-down re: AC. Find or make yourself some +4 plate or other heavy stuff and you'll go far, especially with helms and limb-wear to match.

Never been able to get a mummy character on their feet, really, but I'm really wanting to get a death knight up there.

I think my favourite class so far is the stalker. I play a different class with every character lately, and I think the stalker "playstyle" really jives well with me. They can be hard to start out though.

that'd be a no.

the official unix version page
(http://www.geocities.jp/ita_iluvatar/cr/index-e.html)

seems to imply it's doable, but i get the impression that it right there is what nana compiled, and hers definitely only works on ppc.

edit: and no dice on the windows version working under darwine either, though just about the only thing i've been able to run properly in darwine is windows installers, so..

Apologies for a Necro'ish initial post....but I'm thrilled to find a broad discussion for this game outside of wherever else on the Internet folk are actually playing this game.

A couple weeks back, I went on a binge to acuire all the graphical roguelikes for PC I could, and Crawl has thus far came across so great that there are at least 3-6 others I still need to get around to trying....providing the addiction ever subsides enough.

With no info really prior to this thread, I'd been playing it totally by ear with only my experiences with Fushigi Dungeon and Fatal Labyrinth games to guide me.

One question upon which hopefully I can get the topic active again for even more discussion gameplay wise: How is it people are able to view such a detailed screen upon death/escape? All I ever get onscreen is the usual list of just EQ at death, then when I hit a key for more, it goes black, then hit any key again and it shows the high scores. I'm on Windows XP if it matters.

Here's some stuff I've come to think:

Mummies: VERY handy race...at least no food and as a Necro. Just don't be like me and make it down close to the 10th floor only to run into a powerful ghost of a previous character while not having the Turn Undead spell or anything fit for Ghost Busting. No eating need = possibilities to fully explore/train/kill on each floor. Not having to worry about poison at all and cold to pretty much a similar extent is great too....just be wary. Somehow, I once got down around the 6th level and came across Lava complete with Fire Serpents or Hydras or something....wasn't pretty.

Demonspawn: This topic made me finally think to try a Gladiator for it...as soon as I got that triple black scale, and then poison immunity....I knew my AC experiment character would make it far, well, he got to about 12ish like my Hill Dwarf on account of a mix of bad luck on the former and forgetting strategy on the latter.

Grey Statues: I hate this thing....after reading what the Gold ones did to folk I didn't know what to expect, but jeez, this thing sucks. "You're getting looked at!"...then all knids of demons and such I had never before encountered on the earlier levels start gating in and tearing into me....even my Summon Lesser mutation got wiped like it was nothing. If I see one again, and am an Earth Gnome, I swear I'll use "That Guy's Method"..(last spell in the starting Earth mage book) to try and blow it up.

Martial Arts: Seems doable afterall....providing you take down some hefty foes while having all other skills turned off. Got a Troll MA'ist (he was supposed to be a Fighter that started with junk Flail knowledge or something) all the way up ot like the 9th Floor with junk EQ, getting a bit to paranoid too explore aftter floor 5, and not knowing when to stike a balance and try to catch Fighting back up since it was at skill 2 versus Hand to Hand at like 8/9

Spriggan Transmuters: You gotta try these guys. Starts with a staff of Striking...and seemingly Evocation can be Trained insanely easier with these guys than any other skill with any other class that I know of....I seriously wonder if this is a bug or something. If you've ever been swarmed by a bunch of Gnolls or Orcs...Evaporating your Distilled stuff (both skills gotten early and easy thanks to Evocation) will allow for a very cathartic group massacre. Confuse that seems to somewhat poison, then straight poison, then the seemingly useless water potion to scald...plus who knows what else you can eventually get to shoot. Did I mention they have the same movement rate as Centaurs...allowing to actually retreat for MP's sake unlike most other races? Because that's awesome.

What other class combos have people been trying....weird and otherwise? How'd they go, what all was your thinking with them? What's the deal with Xom...does he just randomly do stuff period and praying to him is just a waste of time?

Bonus tip: As a Mummy, somehow beat a bunch of stuff down having your low/useless Stealth turned off from the start of the game. As soon as it is doable that you have a big exp pool that your main skills would moderately/slowly eat with risky combat...flee back up(or down) to the Ecumenical Temple and turn all skills off but Stealth. Shift + Num 5 your way through seconds/minutes of realtime, nonstarving to death goodness and watch your Stealth rating shoot well up to your level from the sweet, sweet no enemy Ecumenical Temple.

I hope people would catch me on AIM as well whenver to talk about this game more. I seriously wondered from all my prior fruitless searches that I was nigh the only one playing this "obscured" game....but this forum (which looks awesome in general), gives me hope.

Game on!

seems to imply it's doable, but i get the impression that it right there is what nana compiled, and hers definitely only works on ppc.

edit: and no dice on the windows version working under darwine either, though just about the only thing i've been able to run properly in darwine is windows installers, so..

Yeah, I've tried. I wish that someone would pony up and port it, because I want to play that shit again SOOOOOOOOOOOO badly and fuck dual-booting.

works in parallels, by the by. and parallels is dramatically less - heavy(?) - than you might think, provided you configure it to run on 192mB of ram or so (out of hopefully a gig or more) with a completely stripped-down version of XP that just loads whatever it is you want to load (crawl) on startup.

getting more detailed info comes by reading the morgue .txt file, it keeps a record of the last few turns of your character's life, all their mad loot, and their kills. and the score.

and it's awesome.

trolls and hand-to-hand work very well together; mine tended to go with enormo-clubs and axes to properly capitalize on that gigantic strength, but hth attacks have great speed on them.

i still can't get mummies past the fourth floor. they are never "lucky" enough to have a floor 3 ecu temple, either... and always seem super-fragile. one day, damnit.

chaos knights and stalkers? still my favourites.

oh, PTB: try a minotaur or dwarf berserker. hard to beat their survivability, since they can rage at will. Trolls can eat anything, which basically prevents the "starvation death" but until dragonhide they can't wear anything worthwhile, so you're better off with a mino or dwarf so you can get plate whenever you see it. My mino, blythe, above was a total beast of a character, and only died because I tend to forget I have getaway items. Sad

Good to know on that txt file! I'll definitely start checking that once I can get into a reliable groove to get down the levels better.

The trick to a Mummy Necro as I come to understand it is Agony. Agony works on just about everything aside from the Undead and I think Imps (possibly remembering wrong). Being able to learn Summon Skeleton right away is also a big part of it as you should summon up nigh everything to skill up faster and have an additional attack force for rough times or anything agony doesn't work on. Mummies don't have to worry about Poison or a good old shift + 5 so skellies are plentiful and handy early on....just watch out that your Agony casts don't hit them because it'll just waste it.

From there, I see 2 ways to go....each with some luck. Either get Turn Undead next as your answer to Undead/Ghost that are quite likely to appear after the first few floors OR Raise Dead to gain a more potent army than skellies. Whichever you get first you gotta hope to level ASAP to get the other. Since shfit5'ing works great as a Necro for so many things, ya want to pick area to do it in that serve as chokepoint to hopefully minimize the amount of enemies at one time 1 that kicks you outta the Super Wait mode....that means don't do it in a small room with a staircase...because if you try it stuff will come up or down the staircase, even on the top floor, shoving you out of the way and then getting a shot at close range combat....which is bad.

Another thing to consider doing, once you've made it a few floors down and have a big exp chunk to spend perhaps on stealth is to quickly return to floor one and turn off ALL skills...and proceed to beat up on the weakest foes that level has to offer barehanded until you get the Fighting Skill...which you will then spend your overflow on to train it up high relative to your level---thus gaining some much needed HP at low risk for our Undead Champion.

I know I've got a long way to go wiht mine...but mark my words....eventually I'll scheme enough for Mum_Ra_The_Everliving to lay waste to this game....

-I'll give those Berserkers a shot. So far the main thing I was trying for those races was Gladiator...mainly for the arbitrary reason that I seemed to find better EQ as a Gladiator than otherwise. Like for my character that wound up with a big AC pool I found "The Blob"...a weapon that sucked stat wise but gave an insane AC boost in addition to heavy armor and such.

Speaking of Heavy Armor, does anybody know how best to utilzise the skill in order to keep pace with the heavier armors as you find them?...like what is needed to keep Plate armor from obstructing your attacks, at least as often.

Also, has ANYBODY been able to figure out a good way to attempt make a Dodger? AC seems easily doable to get in the game...but Evading/Blocking stuff is just always better.

I need to experiment more on so much....

spriggans are some of the best dodgers, hands-down, and they can only wear robes and dodge-training armour.

my last spriggan stalker was very evasive... rings of hardcore +ev help lots, but you can only stack so much evasion, even with artifacts.

i think ac is probably more important than massive ev, in the end. tends to keep you alive better.

crawl is the only roguelike i've ever gotten deep into (and since i beat it i've never been able to get a character past the orc mines. luck only goes so far...) but i think it's fair to say that you could conceivably spend weeks on one character build if you get heavily into the strategy end of things.

I know what ya mean....my head swims with Ponderings related to the game when I try to go to sleep these last several days. Laughing

I'm very tempted to make a topic encompassing all the other Graphical Roguelikes I tracked down online in the same breath as Crawl....but I'd need to actually sit and throw time into several of them.

Perhaps somebody more astute at screenshots and the like would be inspired to do it after giving some or all of them a shot..

One of them....I didn't even make it past character creation. Why? Because unlike Crawl, this one has you make an 8 CHARACTER party. I could just feel a tingle that said "Good lord this'll get hardcore if I get sucked into the pace...I better get back to that Crawl game and get my bearings."

Today's helpful tip: Pillar of Fire. This is a priceless skill for Conjurers and the like since it allows you to unload in a narrow area on a foe, then throw up a pillar right before they could get within melee range....then finish them off by unloading many a spell at them while it burns and they freak out. Should they be "crazy" enough to try to step into it, or you not pay attention to the keys, a world of hurt will be put on them. Only 2 or 3 MP IIRC to cast it....lasts quite a few turns. You can't cast it where something already exists though you can create multiple fires to perhaps "freak" then foes enough to lose it and attempt to flee through a back fire....or as a lemming-style trap for a fleeing Giant Ant or Blob once their HP gets too low.

I need to start playing this game again.

I need to put it on my DS... that's a solid port, right?

Does it have the cock ring of strangulation

Here's some more thoughts based on my WIP figurings of this game's wranglings:

-LIghtning Bolt is very interesting in that it will PIERCE and RICOCHET/REBOUND! This can be used to get in 2 hits versus 1 for the same MP cost on potentially a small mob....as well as a spiffy way to suicide trying to kill a Hobgoblin...at lvl 1....30 sec into the game....facing a wall with it one space from it. I might need to test more, but I think the rebound works if there is a wall or something within 4 tiles of your target. As far as ricochet goes...I've done it...but not yet figured how to get it to hit anything due to how it would go. Still need to test what happens if you cast if in a very tighet area rebound wise to see if it can reflect several times and how. Also don't know what the interaction is if you use in on a steel wall compared to the basic brick ones

-Transmuters: What is the range of potions that you can actually use as weapons? Today my Spriggan busted Sigmund in the eye with a Slow potion, yet the effect and appearance seemed to be exactly the same as a Potion of Confusion. That said though, Confusion + Giants/Trolls/Centaurs/Named foes that are alive = MANY extra turns to pump them full of Staff of Striking while not getting any reprisals for it.

I really should've played more today....though that Spriggan I mentioned above did make it all the way down to the 12th floor....which I instantly fled from only to run into a bad combo of Mage + Eyeball on the 11th.

Yet more:

-Latest and greatest record now is FLOOR 13 with a Troll Fighter of the unarmed variety. Pumped Str every level save one time I was thinking it capped at 30. Finding a +5 str ring probably made all the difference in the world since my EQ otherwise was nothing to speak of really.

-Newest fear among many foes I came across in those early teen flooors: Flame Giants. One long range shot in an open area left me with 3 hp down from being maxed out...and considering I fought very often/had full cleared most standard levels prior with only Fighting, Unarmed and Dodge turned on..that scares me.

-HIlarious oddity: Playing, of all things, a Demonsapwn Monk...SOMEHOW...I was only on floor 3 and low level when I saw something I'd not seen before, but felt like it was familiar somehow from the thread. Sure enough, I clicked it for info and it was a freaking HYDRA. By sheer luck, it happened to be several spaces away and in another flash of luck/mythological rememberings I had a fire wand of some sort. All the charges hit and killed it right when it would have been in striking distance next to me. Mass levelling and mutations commenced as I got in a good laugh....felt like one of those glorious Metal Slime/Babble mass level ups in a Draqon Quest game. The character didn't go on to be all that great unfortunately, but for awhile there until a bad mob/poison/magic it was interesting having a Monk with the nice kind of AC that seemingly only demonci mutations can reasonably provide. Wink

-I want to get a Chaos Knight to work out....but so far the luck just isn't there. I figure a Demonspawn Chaos night, with good luck, has got to have some of the best odds in the game if only it didn't have the worst ones otherwise, heh.

-Centaur Hunters: How do you play these things? Several times I've tried this character....only to slim to NEVER be able to actually hit anything via bow, thrown w/sling, darts, or what have you. Is there a certain magic number I should be rerolling for on character creation DEX wise or something?

centaurs have pretty terrible dex; the main incentive to use them for hunters is because they can move so quickly.

we call that balancing =(

but yeah, i've never had much luck, either. centaur crusaders, on the other hand, are lots of fun.

Even just a centaur fighter works out well - they've got decent strength and that land speed really helps them keep up with, say, blinking mages. (Centaur berserkers are a thing of beauty - when raging, you're the second-fastest thing in the whole damn game).

Trolls tend to be very fragile because they can't really wear any armour that's worth a damn. I stopped playing trolls for a while after I got one-shotted by a hill giant. This was as a trollish berserker with, yep, 30 str.

Chaos knights require a lot of luck - that magic weapon and armour don't really help you out a whole lot because your opening stats tend to be on the crap side. If you have a good first two floors you're basically set for the rest of your run, since that'll probably net you enough piety to summon lesser demons (well, as a follower of Makhleb. As a follower of Xom, you need constant good luck to make it, because Xom loves to beat his children.). If not, you're dead.

I keep trying draconian monks, but I keep getting necrophages on floor 1. I'm serious, every time there's some ghoul waiting to eat me. I think monks are cursed.

-I will try these various suggested Centaur builds outside of Hunter...seems potential'y.

-Str doesn't cap at 30 afterall though....at one point I thought it did...but after some other levels I think when I died it was at like 33. Or did I hallucinate/berserk and it really does cap at 30...cause if so I know what to hope for on rolls closest to 30 at creation so I could then focus on dex...

-Why do I seemingly fail at all religions save for Xom or Trog? Either seems like I can't figure out what to even do for the other ones based on the descriptions....or my implementation is just horribly made of suck.

-I've also been trying to make a Draconian Monk in an aim to "recreate" that one Firefighter/Dragon character from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters for NES....to no avail. I want to think that it'll all work out if I can get far enough for some mutations...but it just hasn't happened yet. Red_Arremer, that Demonspawn Monk I mention prio, got the closest yet of having a fighting chance. He even got a Fire Breathing mutation as one of the ones for killing that Hydra....mwahaha...ah... Sad I miss him so.

Is the consensus with a Monk to aim for dex/str to be as balanced as possible...or in their case should dex be paramount in order to boost the chances of actually connecting with the seemingly always impressive Tail Slap? Since Ogres/Trolls get Str each level bonus by default I saw fit to double to effect with the bonus to spend....but others simply won't get the kinda starting stats those 2 get more than likely.

PROTIP #1: Berserking with an amulet of resist slowing is a very good idea.
PROTIP #2: Don't go traipsing around the bottom of the dungeon with only 3 int!

It was an orange statue that did it, with absolutely no warning, on the first turn that it was in line of sight. Crawl is a lot nicer than nethack about sudden, unpredictable deaths, but it made an exception for poor little Phouchg. Anyone know exactly how much int I need to have to make sure this never happens again?

More than a berserker will usually have.

Centaur berserkers typically have higher int than other races!

I guess it drained three or more points in one turn? Dang, dude.

As a rule I always pack as much magic resistance as possible, at the expensive of every and anything else, in order to avoid stepping around a corner into something like that, although I'm not exactly clear if that's how draining resistance is handled in every instance.

crawl made me a committed atheist (within the context of crawl) for just those reasons. xom kept slapping me around and having to put on resist mutation amulet just to keep him from nuking me for no reason (or animating my weapons to kill me, ha ha good one)...and he was the best choice out of all of them.

trog and makhleb only want you to kill things, and you only anger them if you fail to kill things while in their service!

i like them.

other gods are tougher to make love you. sif muna's not bad, since he/she/it likes it when you cast spells, and doesn't like it when you're not casting spells.

the good gods are a total pain in the ass. seriously. the shining one? no way.

Seriously, without the gods there's no way I'd get as far as I have. Like, Okawaru or Trog will give you way more artifacts than Xom with none of the drawbacks. It's pretty simple to figure out what they like and don't like and the rewards are tremendous.

I can't believe I'm trying to sell someone on religion.

yeah. and like, i know i should theoretically go okawaru over trog (for the heal, mostly, and the berserk penalties can get you in deep shit) but i never seem to have luck with him. Sad

Forgive me while I dredge up the DSCrawl subject yet again... anyone had any luck with this? It's a DLDI version that supposedly works or did at one point, but when I run it on my R4, saving works fine (yay!) but nothing displays except for messages (argh!).
