Oh wow! Introversion has a dev blog now!

Maybe some of you knew this already and that's where you found out about Subversion, but man I can't wait to read all of this tomorrow!

Talk about the success and changes that are coming to Introversion!

i bought defcon, and really wanted to get hella into it, but it didn't hold my attention (of course, nothing, regardless of quality, has held my attention recently except Dwarf Fortress which makes me think I'm becoming autistic); but Introversion themselves earn some kind of Super Gold Star for being all independent and pretty and clever.

and generally yay for dev blogs; even a tiny bit of transparency does a lot for me in terms of building a company's or professional's appeal.

I hate to break it to you, but Subversion has been out for years now.

Note to anyone who knows where that link goes without mousing over it: shut up shut up shut up.

I quite like Introverion's work even though I haven't bought any of their games and am awaiting to see what will become of what they are beavering away on now. Granted, I'm more attracted by the visual styles they use more than how the games actually play but I have enjoyed myself to an extent with that part as well.

i liked uplink a lot. the interface cultivates a really good suspense of disbelief, and it's a pretty good mercenary game. darwinia came out and was nothing like it: it doesn't look like anything, the maps are scripted, and the play is tedious and frustrating. i've only played defcon two-player (with cycle) and it didn't do much for me, though i could see it being good with a larger number of players. it does show that introversion learned from darwinia: defcon is much more coherent visually, and they seem to have learned that they're terrible at creating scripted content, because there is none in defcon.

i don't actually find them all that interesting as a developer. they've still yet to surpass their first project. all i know about their next project is it has algorithmically-generated roadmaps.

They made lots of mistakes with Darwinia (I believe they've fixed a few now) but I still managed to enjoy it... it reminded me of the days when I played games where I had no idea what I was doing, how to do it, etc. I just had fun experimenting and seeing whats what.

Unfortunately, I've had trouble finding people to play DEFCON with. I mean, the public servers are packed, but I hate joining public servers for any game. Lots of people I used to play against have either moved on, lost interest or too budy to play. A couple of my friends just like playing as a team against the computer which I think is totally retarded and against what the game is a bout, but they're too scared to actually challenge each others wits. Ooohhhhh well.

I like the company though. Chris Delay was fantastic when I wrote an article about the company. It was nice to have someone who responded to my questions BEFORE my deadline.

I do often wonder, when the topic of Subversion comes up, what Introversion uses for source control.

Ok, so, fuck this

I got Darwinia

I installed it

Then it won't fucking work.

The worst part?

The demo will work.

I've done everything on their site, and I don't know what else to do. Any advice?

This is why I hate fucking PC games.

No, he installed the demo after installing the game in a fit of rage, so I doubt that's it. He also spent the better part of two hours trying to upgrade his DirectX drivers and stuff to no avail.

Basically the game loads, the music plays for two seconds, and then the executable core dumps and a generic "Darwinia.exe has encountered an error." message comes up. When Matt gets out of the shower he can probably explain better.

did you guys try this?

Quote:

Oh good god Darwinia just crashes!

This is an odd bug at first look, you'll have this bug if when you start darwinia, the menu loads fine, but the levels die on you rather quickly (some people don't make it as far as the menu though).

The solution is simple.

Open your prefrences.txt file, and add this line:

Code:
RenderLandscapeMode = 1
[/quote]

I'm going to try this:

Quote:
I've got an ATi IGP card in my laptop...

ATi never really supported their early IGP range of cards. Sadly thsi also means that the cards themselves are not up to the decent quality of ATi cards. What this means is that there's a problem with ATi and the world map, resulting in Darwinia crashing upon startup.

You'll need to modifiy your prefrences.txt and use the Startmap line. First set Bootloader to none, and then add this line:

Code:
Startmap=garden

You'll need to change that value each time you finish a level. The Dr should tell you the name of the next level, hopefully, but if you get stuck, you're welcome to ask.

Every time you hit the world map, darwinia will probibaly crash; this is a limitation of the card. If you want to be able to use the world map, then there's another hack, called 3DAnalyse.

You can get it from this site. You'll need to run it, and set textures to a max of 32x32, or turn them off. Then the world map should work, but it won't look great.

There's more talk about this issue in this topic.

Patch Status:
This is an issue with ATi's IGP cards, although it might be fixable with a future patch from Introversion. The fan base has come up with two work arounds, but either ATi or IV will have to solve this. As always, this topic will be updated to let you know.

Shaper, do you do all your PC gaming on a laptop?

Something must be done!

I've got spare parts up here, y'all.

My desktop died a while back. I don't really use any other computer, and I can hook this one (my laptop) up to my TV so I can get the couch effect. I don't really like playing PC games though.
