Wii Sports
Shadow Of The Colossus (released 2006 in pal territories okay)
Rhythm Tengoku

... I should really play more games. Um. I liked Dead Rising ok too. That's an honorable mention, I guess.

not a terrific year.. let's see.

1. final fantasy xii - plays well and has some pretty great storytelling up until the halfway mark, when it begins to alternate decent gameplay and decent storytelling. that ending, though. star wars ho. epics can be epic for epic's sake.

2. electroplankton - really the only notable DS title to be released all year other than brain age, which is kind of a shame (although in retrospect, each of my seven DS titles from 2005 save for my two favorites, kirby and trauma center, were little more than perfections of old franchises - not that that's a bad thing). hell of a lot of fun. i probably remember it too fondly. mario paint much?

3. wii sports - yes. if i had to pick a "game of the year" for practical purposes i'd probably just ignore the two above and give it to wii sports, for pretty obvious reasons (even though i really only like 3/5 of the package). it's the console's merit, of course, but hey. only comes around once every five years.

4. twilight princess
5. dotstream
6. dead rising - based on the demo only until they port it to PC. i still say it needs a crowd the way burnout or GTA do.
7. contact - played more or less like shit, but!
8. oblivion - couldn't have played it but on a laptop, but the fact that i didn't resent it just based on its having so much content says something (about it and me!)
9. phoenix wright 2 - maybe i'll finish this someday. if i had played the original i don't think i'd be as impressed, but it made me smile a lot.
10. new smb - don't be hating. multiplayer is fun, too. i maintain that the DS had a really shoddy year.

...something like that. though i haven't played gears, mother 3, or hl2: ep1, and i have a feeling all three would be on there.

My top two games of the year are as follows (nothing else really lived up to either of them in my opinion):

1. Gears of War
2. Elite Beat Agents

Two notable games that I have not played that might have made this list: Dead Rising, Rhythm Tengoku. Rhythm Tengoku is in the mail, though, so we'll see where I stand a week from now.

I'm giving GOTY to Rocket Slime, but honestly I haven't played that many new games this year. Steambot Chronicles belongs on the list somewhere.

Final Fantasy XII, MGS3 Subsistence, Toribash (while it was free), and Black, for me.

Honorable mentions for Dwarf Fortress, which sounds like the game of the year, and Bookworm Adventures, which takes Bookworm (the popcap game) and turns it into an RPG. It's one of those titles like Typing of The Dead or Phoenix Wright, where it's so much fun that it makes "real" games look bad.

not that it's possible to objectively rank one game above all others, but

rhythm tengoku

wes, are those in order of bestness? how do you decide whether elite beat agents or daxter is the better game?

I wouldn't even know what my top games from the year were. Probably some shit like Outrun 2006 or LEGO Star Wars 2, I played the absolute shit out of that one.

EDIT: Oh, wait, Cookign Mama, that's the shit right there.

It's completely arbitrary! Actually, it's something of a combination of how enjoyable the game is with how long it stays that enjoyable, with how and what and whether or not it made me think about the medium.

In reality they're probably about the same, but Daxter's on there partially to reinforce the point that New Super Mario Bros isn't.

In alpha order:

Dead Rising
Every Extend Extra
Gears of War
God Hand
Odama
Rayman: Raving Rabids
Rocket Slime
Steambot Chronicles
Wii Sports
Zelda: Twilight Princess

Honestly, going back through a mental list of the good stuff this year was hard to do. There were so many "solid" games that really aren't that amazing but very 7.5/10 material. I almost put Guitar Hero on the list, but I still don't own it so it probably shouldn't be on the list. I was going to cheat and put Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistance, but decided not to.

The best games I played this year were retro games I hadn't played before.

Now I have no clue what year Metal Wolf Chaos was released for the Xbox, but god damn is it ever the best game about America. I was finally able to get a copy of this game over New Year's weekend and it was SO worth it.

Richard Hawk is my favorite villain, ever. Such cheesy dialogue and even the President gets tons of nonsensical one-liners like "Suck my missile punch!".

You burst out of an exploding White House to start the game!

Everyone must play this game, I dare say it's the game of the generation!

It gives me hope that someday there will be a Dynasty Warriors game based on the American Civil War. I will be Lincoln!

I haven't bought a new game (as in full price, just came out/brand new) in almost 2-3 years now. I did pick up Final Fantasy 3 though. Good but I wouldn't say it's one of my favorite games EVER. I would have chosen Shadow of the Colossus, but that was 2005 in the USA, wasn't it? I didn't buy it until August though . . .

Onimusha 4 wasn't so bad, and I HEARD Xenosaga III was good too (I own yet but have yet to play it).

Guess I should put down my DS and play some other games on other systems . . .

Well yeah, that's why I stopped playing it. But the fights had started to get repetitive before then. There was a lot of flailing around in the air trying desperately to hit something going on.

I would like an explanation as well. I'm one of 10 people that actually HAVE a Japanese Xbox, so that game was practically made for me. I want it.

While I want to make the tale of obtaining the greatest title on the Xbox (and this generation) much more interesting than it really was, but I lack those writing genes that many other posters seem to have in spades. I also came down with a cold this past week (I blame children) so I've not been in the mood to do post anything until now.

What happened was that when I first viewed the trailer about 18 months ago I tasked a couple of my overseas friends with keeping an eye out for this game for me. The plus to this is that these guys aren't really crazy gamers (as yours truly) and they don't know why I'm looking for a particular item. It helps that I can usually pay them in food and drink when I see them in America whenever their vacations come.

Now one of my good friends who happens to teach in the JET program (or at least used to) happened to have to stopped by Singapore for a few days. Out of pure friggin luck my good buddy located a copy of this at some place I wish I could remember the name of. Ahhh, to be able to travel like him! He said it was like $40-$50 for it and apparently they had a copy of Psyvariar 2 for Xbox as well. Most intrguing! I never knew that was also released on Xbox!

Now the problem is that any game with a mighty mech on the cover with a Presidential Seal will always lend to some curiosity. He used to be a pretty hardcore gaming man, but getting laid on a regular basis tends to change perspectives on many issues. Though being around my place for any length of time usually will reset priorities. Naturally upon popping the disc in we are greeted with the finest intro and dialogue since the ending to Bad Dudes ::"Hey dudes, thanks for rescuing me. Let's go for a burger... Ha! ha! ha! ha!"

Naturally since the game is built on the Otogi engine nearly everything you see is destructable. Which just makes the game even better. Also there are foot soldiers scattered around which you can just stomp and pummel for massive hit-combos. Bursting out of the white house and seeing it in person, live on my screen. Well! We knew this was going to be a magical adventure. Unfortunately the jerk is also an Indian Giver and changed his mind ( :P) about me paying him for the copy. He seemed to want it for himself now to showcase to all his friends. This happened before when I asked another to procure a copy of Twinkle Star Sprites last year.... C'est la vie

At the very least since it's an Xbox title I at least copied it for myself before he left back to Japan. Unfortunately/Fortunately (I've not decided which...) since premiering this title is in high demand in my circle.

Also there is a gun called the AFB which I don't know how I unlocked, but the game deemed me worthy enough to bestow it onto me. It is the most awesome weapon I've ever seen as it fires American Footballs. Yes! Along with GodHand these titles form the manliest duo to have ever been played.

So yeah, Singapore is the magical land where luck struck. Now if my friend actually ends his Japan career this year I may find the real deal back in my possession soon enough!

Some favorites:

HL2: Episode One
Defcon
World of Warcraft †
Knytt
Final Fantasy XII
God Hand
Contact
Elektroplankton

† I do realize, of course, that WoW is not exactly a new game, but seeing that I just started playing it and it is a MMO about to receive a huge expansion and thus is about as current as anything else, I think it fits here.

Also, honorable mention to MGS3: Subsistence.

Games that I think would very likely be on my list had I played them:

Wii Sports
Zelda: Twilight Princess (though I still consider this one a big maybe)
Excite Truck
Trauma Center: Second Opinion
Bit Generations
Rhythm Tengoku
Every Extend Extra
Dead Rising
Gears of War
FEAR (also maybe)
Elder Scrolls: Oblivion
Medieval II: Total War

I'm also curious about Battlefield 2142. I own a copy, but I have not yet opened it and don't know for sure that I'm going to. I just might, though.

Biggest disappointments: Okami, New SMB, Animal Crossing: Wild World (will eat your soul), and (after the initial glow wore off) Rule of Rose.

Worst game that I didn't really expect much out of anyway: Deep Labyrinth.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth deserves a shout-out. There were a lot of things wrong with it, but it was one of the most memorable games I played in 2006.

Anyway, yeah. Rhythm Tengoku.

Wii Sports: Boxing gets nods for Most Surprisingly Brutal Versus Game and Best Punch-Out Flashbacks, and just gets edged out in the hotly contested category of That Really Kind Of Hurt My Arm Actually (which was captured by the Guitar Hero demo where you can't change the handedness.)

It's not just hard, it's poorly balanced in its difficulty, and irritating in what you have to go through again (and again [and again]) after death. I really enjoyed it until the first chase scene in the hotel. Then I put up with it for a little while until you're supposed to break into the jail (or sherrifs office, I forget what I was trying to do) where I gave up. It also looked terrible on the 360 for whatever reason.

6. Chibi Robo

Just got around to trying this out this week and I think it makes my list. It has too much repetitive and uninteresting dialogue (Why does it seem that this is a growing trend in console games lately?) but it's fun and original.

Why does it have to include a gun, though? Does every game need to have guns? I think there should be a moratorium on guns (or maybe weapons in general) in video games for a year or so to force people to actually use their imaginations.

You need to head over to the "8 Man Vs." thread.

I don't think so. That thread is just a big fight over semantics. It's like nobody has realized that no matter what Man is vs it's still pretty much the same conflict in a different context.

Chibi-Robo though! I agree with your sentiments, but because of how it's handled I don't think it affects the tone of the game. Since there's no real skill or violence involved with the gunplay it's more of a tool than anything else - no different than the Squirter or the Toothbrush and it's probably the best thing they could have done to break up the monotony of exploration.
