I'm tempted to check this out, since it's going for $10 on Steam or $15 from Amazon if I want a shiny plastic box to go with it.

I wouldn't be expecting much. I've read a few complaints about how it demonstrates "just how stale the FPS genre has become", but also that it's very enjoyable — short and sweet. Besides, it's running on the Source engine, and that alone wins it a few points by default. Or so I would think, anyway; I suppose it's entirely possible that the game could be so bad that it completely undermines the awesomeness of Valve's engine.

yes!!!

you were totally right on this one, dude.

i'm only at the intro, but the bit with the ninjas at the very first part. i really enjoyed the conversation about the ninja's grandmother poisoning her grandfather to make sure he came home after work.

I will check out NOLF2!

And maybe Call of Duty 2, once I build that shiny new PC.

well, for starters, you don't feel like you're playing FOX NEWS: THE GAME. (or worse yet, TEAM AMERICA, EXCEPT SERIOUS)

it's not the sort of history channel version of world war 2 one gets from the medal of honor series.

you also play in the battle of stalingrad. and on harder settings you die constantly. it actually communicates some of the utterly mangled insanity of that particular part of world war II. (the american side is, in comparison, the weakest part of the game).

it's also a lot of fun, despite some of the stupid conventions regarding health. it actually makes for a better game, despite being not very historically accurate.

It's been said before, I'll say it again:

They need to make an FPS that spans the entirety of the Eastern Front in WW2. Where you can play as German, Russian, Polish* or Finnish** troops.

* - For example, play a Polish revolutionary in Warsaw when the Soviets "stalled" their westward drive at the end of the war.

** - Play a sniper on skis! Dammit, this would be awesome.

Well, hell, if you're giving it away I guess I'd be curious to see what a mess it turned out to be.

I tried to play Invisible War for a little bit. It doesn't run very well on my computer, and as a result both looks and feels like a N64 game. A lot like Perfect Dark, actually. Which is a far cry from Deus Ex itself.

Oh, wait, so Snowblind is actually decent?

Fervently and desperately recommending the original Call of Duty as well as Call of Duty 2 all up in here.
Some of the most cinematic moments I've ever experienced in a video game, and the first game to make me actually care about sticking it to the Germans.
The pre-amble to Stalingrad in the original is great.

I heard Sin Episodes was canned? That kinda sucks. I haven't played it yet but I wanna pick it up. I wouldn't mind a big guns, big action, big boobs FPS.

The Operative 2 (NOLF part 2) isn't as good as the original! It's still pretty swell though, but I wish they did some things differently. It's not as good as Goldeneye, the game it's clearly inspired by.

dhex, do you have paypal so I can actually pay for that stuff we talked about? You gave me your address and I didn't really know what to do with it. I mean, we live in the age of the Intertron!
