|
|
Hi all, while I'll be in Wisconsin most of this next week, I'm planning on going to some of the used game stores in the area to try and find as many games I've wanted to play on previous consoles as possible. For example, last summer when the insert credit forums did the Megaman Legends game club, I could've easily gone to one of the used stores and bought that game except I live in California where I haven't found any thing like that.
So, I need suggestions of Playstation, Genesis and maybe SNES titles that are worth picking up and playing. I've never owned an SNES, I only own four games for the PSX (three of which are Squaresoft RPGs) and I own a few for the Genesis but nothing that gets talked about these days.
Suggestions for N64, Saturn and NES are welcome as well. |

For Saturn, I'd say get NiGHTS. For Genesis, you could get Toejam and Earl (the first in the series is a roguelike, the second is a platformer). |

Ranger X is pretty neat-o.
Sub Terrania is rad, but I think you should warn Nana that it can get ludicrously hard. _________________

Around stage 7 it starts to get kind of ridiculous. Although there are only 10 stages, so, yeah. _________________

For PSX, Trap Runner/Gunner and probably Silent Bomber, which I haven't played but I've heard that it's a really nice game.
For Megadrive, you should get M.U.S.H.A., Contra Hard Corps, Castlevania: Bloodlines and Beyond Oasis. If you like music, Thunderforce IV is good stuff. Most of those are obvious choices, granted, but the right choices. _________________

For N64: Excitebike 64, Blast Corps, Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Or if for some reason you haven't played Mario 64, do that first. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

This is very difficult to do because there is so much. I approve the Contra: Hard Corps genesis recommendation. I say go for Actraiser on the SNES. And Strider 2 for the PS1. That's just one per system, and I can't really recommend anything for the N64 though you may get a kick out of Mischif Makers. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Go for Parasite Eve and PaRappa the Rapper on PS1, if you can. Genesis-wise, I'm a total Outrun whore and Gunstar Heroes is also very nice.
Seconding Mischief Makers. Also, if it's your kind of thing, you might get a lot of mileage out of Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon. _________________

The N64 has a ton of good games. Mario Kart and Goldeneye are still good, and if you've got a bunch of friends that recently stopped playing a lot of videogames, they will start again. They're that good. Mario Kart especially. _________________ Wii #: 8749 9109 9732 3653

Most of those are decent, a few are good. Most aren't really worth spending any time with. Depending on your taste there might not be any worth spending time with. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Yeah, I've got to admit that many of these have been 1-uped in more recent years. But I stand by that list and if something on it sounds like something you might enjoy there's a good chance you will!
Get Blast Corps regardless of your tastes though. It's less than $1 last time I checked and it's amazing. You'll need a memory card for it though.

I actually have a bunch of N64 games including most of the ones listed in this thread. So far I'll be looking for Blast Corps (which I've played but never beat), Excitebike 64 and Mischief Makers.
That said, I'm more interested in PSX suggestions mainly since it has a huge library and I've only played a few games. |

I believe it is more true for domestic Saturn releases than N64 as someone who owned both during their heydays. |

True, but I have always considered both the Saturn and Turbo Grafix more niche systems. That said, I think the domestic US/UK list of games for both those is probably less interesting than the N64, but the international lists for those are much better (PCE) and about the same (Saturn).

A lot of these are RPGs and Fighting Games, so they've kinda fallen out of favor or been usurped by modern titles. Above are what I consider to be the better or most original PS games though (for example, Carnage Heart might not be that great overall, but being a mech game where your only interface is a simple visual-based programming language makes it worth a mention).

Mischief Makers!
Sorrry I don't have much of a list for playstation, though
The only games I've ever put any time in for that system were rayman, umihara kawase, and crash bandicoot 3. Fun times, all of them, and all representing different approaches to the grit-your-teeth-and-throw-your-controller frustrating platforming. _________________

You crazy too!
Choro Q2 - An exploration racing game. It looks really ugly, but unlike other games in this not-too-populated genre it actually has a pretty full world. The games since this have been a lot more open and pretty boring!
Crash Games - - Do you honestly not like the Crash Series? I loved them. They're like behind-the-back Pitfall, and nothing of anywhere near the calibur has been made since.
Deception Games - Are really unique. You run around with a girl and set traps, then get bad guys to chase you and set off your traps to combo-kill the bad guys. They're really neat.
Grandia - Well, yeah. But I think you like RPGs.
Klonoa: Door to Phantomile - Amazing sense of a unique world. Short game.
Legend of Mana - It's the second best game in the mana series, which doesn't say much, but it tries some interesting things that actually work sometimes.
Pac-Man World 20th Anniversary - The rest of the games in this series really suck, but this one is awesome. It's got Namco fanservice out of the wazoo. There's even a Galaga level! (which is where I'm stuck right now)
Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure - I can't defend this one.
Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman - This game is nutso hillarious. And it's less than $10
Saga Frontier - Say what you will, but I played a lot of this game. A lot of the design decisions are terrible, but there's something about it that's not too bad. It's better than the shitty PS2 Romancing Saga that keeps getting suggested in IC.
Saga Frontier 2 - Same as the first, but with beautiful art.
Star Gladiator Episode 1: Final Crusade - This game is amazing. It's Soul Edge in Star Wars trappings with fun-to-do dial-a-combos. I don't think anything's been done since that's quite as good.
Tobal No. 1 - The second one is better overall, but without any projectiles, the change in balance makes it worth looking into. It's also the only one released domestically.
Tomb Raider 1 & 2 - The only reason anyone says anything bad about this game is because it was the predecessor for 90% of the Playstation games to come after it. If it hadn't had so many sequels it would be remembered in the same way that Prince of Persia is remembered today.
Xenogears - Yeah, yeah. It's easy to talk shit about it, but it's the closest videogames have to an Evangelion for better or for worse.

Don't trust anyone else's taste in games! They don't play anything and get by on assuming that if a game's popular it must not be pretentious enough for them, and if it's not just slightly shy of popular it must not be any good!

You do realize that the PSOne was around in my college days when I literally was made of leisure and had nothing to spend my EB Games paycheck on but videogames, right?

IBTN!
Also, I can't tell if some of the justifications for those games are serious or not, but you made me laugh either way! Also, I said Klonoa was an accident. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

For such a long list of PSX games I'm ashamed to not see Castlevania: Chronicles or the Misadventures of Tron Bonne. I also have a soft spot for Raiden Project and G-Darius since these were shooters that any of my college friends would sit a few roudns for. Even my non-gamer friends. I've yet to figure out why these two appealed so much above all others.
If you're getting an SNES, and want one RPG for the system I think Mario RPG is it. Zombies ate my Neighbors is divine! You should also find anything Kirby for the SNES. Partcularly Kirby Superstar, Dreamland 3, and especially Dream Course! Kirby's Dream Course is a spin-off done so right! Power-ups that are actually helpful and nailing a hole in one or getting under par is so damn satisfying. I would kill for a Wii retooling of this. |

Shaper, you should play Majora's Mask, and Dess, you should play Excitebike before either of you continues this poopy barrage. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

I think there are more games on the 64 that I'd want to play than on the PSX. _________________

Castlevania: Chronicles is on there, it just doesn't have the ":" And Misadventures of Tron Bonne most definitely should be on there. Not sure why it isn't.
Also: I wanted to remind Shaper to namedrop a pure platformer that's been released since the original three Crash Bandicoot games that's even average, let alone above average.

I fully intend to. The GC collectors disc that has it won't play on my GC (it locks up at the same point about 2 hours in) and I'm debating on just holding out for the VC version that is bound to be released. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

I generally disagree with SuperWes (though I'd still call him my e-homie) but I'll refrain from attacking his taste in games and say instead that he likes videogames. There's a contingent of people on here, myself included, who like videogames in concept but hate large parts of the execution.
T Wes average platformers since Crash: NSMB, Yoshi's Island DS, Kirby Squeak Squad, Super Princess Peach

Well, yeah. I just really think that those two games are the cat's meow. And Super Mario 64. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |
