Where I live, today was December 1st, and I went to a concert where a lot of people sung Handel's Messiah. I think that Handel is a hack with all the emotional subtlety of a five-year-old, and I wish that less overtly traditional music would be acknowledged more frequently as appropriate for the season and holiday.

Here are some that I like!

Bach - Jesus Bleibet Meine Freude (some may know this as That Piano Piece in End of Evangelion)
Sigur Ros - Olsen Olsen
Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings (for a tragic Christmas)

What makes you think of Christmas?

Trans-Siberian Orchestra, of course.

I have fond memories of the early Mannheim Steamroller stuff when I was <10, but now that I'm all grown up and live around Vegas, the only Christmas music I hear is the stuff that the old rat-pack era lounge singers did.

I'm Mr. White Christmas, I'm Mr. Snow!
I'm Mr. Icicle, I'm Mr. 10 Below!
Friends call me Snowmiser, Whatever I touch turns to snow in my clutch.
I'm too much!

Yeah basically this is my favorite Christmas song from my favorite Christmas movie "The Year Without a Santa Clause" and I think I like that movie just for the Snowmiser/Heatmiser songs!

Oh alright.

It's still a little rough around the edges, mind you all.

Christmas is here (I've got you by my side)

Man, I saw them the last two years around this time. They put on an excellent live show.

I really like Asobi Seksu's cover of Merry Christmas (I don't want to fight) by the Ramones (there's an mp3 linked from here).

The Decemberists do a weird cover of Please Daddy Don't Get Drunk Tonight.

toups, i've nothing left to hide, because your christmas number, it brought the feeling back into my life.

toups, we should start the first emo rap group ever. maybe throw a little punk and lounge in there for kicks! segue into some death metal...the possibilities are endless!

seriously though i think the emo rap thing is a good idea.

The Vandals did a Christmas album called "Oi! To The World" that I haven't been able to find. Also, Fear did a song called "Fuck Christmas" which is an interesting look at Christmas misanthropy.

I really do agree with churippu about The Year Without a Santa Claus. I wish I had it on DVD or VHS or something.

I love that song. Who's it is by the way?

And No Doubt did a version of Oi. I can't remember much besides the song being annoying and the video being bad.

Absolutely, yes. "Christmas Time is Here" sung by all those children is perhaps my favorite Christmas song, official or unofficial. It's perfectly melancholy yet cheerful. Also, the recording is all messed up in a great way. It practically has the sound of snow crunching beneath a boot imprinted on it.

Magic 8 Ball says: Semi-ironic to the point of casual use.

TGQ isn't filled with as many angry pretentious people as IC, so something like this is bound to go unchecked.

Ah, that reminds me of The Alpha Conspiracy's mix of Cocteau Twins' Heaven or Las Vegas. Unfortunately they don't have a preview of that mix up on last.fm -- it's faster, brighter, more resonating.

I bought the 8-Bits of Christmas chiptune album at Blip yesterday. It's good!

Other than that, I like many covers of "Baby, It's Cold Outside"

I have another chipttunes X-Mas album from Japan, which I like to call the 16-Bits of Christmas, since it sounds like the SNES. Maybe I should upload it?

Haha Sound by Broadcast has a very christmasy sound. I like "A Christmas Gift to You from Phil Spector" a bit too. Otherwise there isn't much I like in that vein.

'A John Waters Christmas' is basically the best christmas album you're going to hear. As the name implies, it's a compilation of all John Water's favorite christmas records. 'Santa Claus is A Black Man' is a definite highlight.

On the other hand two years ago me and my ex-housemate (who was later arrested for having child porn on his computer) did a cover version of 'Pokemon Christmas Bash'. 'Special' is not the word for this.

Every year I give Neil Innes' "Chrismas in Heaven" from "The Meaning of Life" a good listenin' to.

The Clown Man music from Mega Man 8 was always Christmas-y and toy-like to me.

Finally, while not inherently a holiday song, Andy Caldwell's cover/remake/remix of Corcovado (oM Records, 2000) invokes the feeling of a post-snowball fight cognac with a loved one.

Incorporates elements from 'Pancaking' by Digiki feat. MC Cat Genius and SarboChr0n. The guy doing all the girl's voices is my ex-housemate. I'm the one doing Ash, Brock and James.

Most Christmas-themed music bugs me, but I really like Handel's Messiah. I've been wanting to get a CD recording of it, but I can't decide which one. Does anyone like it and have a recommendation?

Wilkes wrote:

I'm sampling some tracks now, and it does promising (even if I can't stand some of the songs they chose in any other format I've heard). Thanks for the tip.

Why? I mean, I've never met someone who said "I like Handel's Messiah" before. Can you explain to me why you like it? I'm curious.

In other news, I totally watched Home Alone 2 the other day. I had its soundtrack and the original's on cassette way back; I think John Williams did the scores. It's a great job. Very warm and Christmasy original music. I always liked film scores; I don't know how many people find them listenable as music independent of their films, so take that for what it is.

Part of it is probably nostalgia: my parents played it around the house when I was very young. But I just like the structure and melodies in various parts. I find some movements tedious, but I guess I like the parts I like enough to want to hear it again every so often (that is, around Christmas time). I don't really have the musical vocabulary to analyze it further and be much more specific, aside from pointing out my favorite parts.

--

A couple other songs I forgot to mention: the winter music in Commodore 64 game B.C. Bill and an old MOD called Xmas Pudding Mix. Neither of these is especially noteworthy, I suppose, but they are Christmas songs I grew up with and have positive memories of.

--

I've listened to all of The 8bits of Christmas now, multiple times, and I think The First Blip Blop Noel and Last Christmas (Hot Digi Remix) are excellent.
