I'm going to say no to that DAIS. It is the most forgotten of Treasure's libray with reason. It's not all that enjoyable and isometric jumping and block pushing puzzles are not something I care to mess with again. It's pleasantly linear but it's very stiff. Avoid. _________________ Signature:

The first time I tried the game out, I ended up playing it for about four hours without pause, which I rarely do. Haven't had the time to play any since then, but it seemed like an interesting game. _________________ Straight up |

So, among my xbox live friends--who are, admittedly, not numerous--I have the top Pac-Man Championship Edition score right now. Well, actually, my roommate does, but it's all under my account. How about them apples. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

i like omega five a lot. i don't fully grasp it yet - especially the second character, tempest, with whom i can't pass the first stage yet - but it's a good game that reminds me of older natsume titles. and gradius V.
i havn't managed to beat the computer once in sensible soccer yet, which i used to be able to do on the mega drive version. i think the little pixel people and the HD graphics actually go together surprisingly well. _________________

I'm having some issues with Omega V. It could be that I haven't played many side-scrolling shooters, but I think a lot of my problems come from
1up.com wrote: | it's hard to judge where the hitbox -- the area where an enemy object actually connects and damages you -- really is. As a rule of thumb, it's the character's torso, but it can be somewhat more accurately figured out by bringing the hero down to the ground level and seeing where the game decides their non-solid legs stop passing through the floor. At any rate, you're still trying to guide a big, invisible rectangle through a bunch of small, narrow obstacles. ... The second issue is simply struggling to see everything. Of course, it's commonplace now to have a shoot-em-up with enemy fire coming at you in cascades, and usually, bullet patterns are designed well enough to ensure some way to avoid them all. But in Omega Five, when bullets, sparks, lasers, and chips are moving around the screen simultaneously, all glowing with the same neon intensity and in multiple colors, and your too-tall hero is trying to collect or dodge them all, it crosses the threshold from "barely manageable" into "ludicrous." |
Is there some other way I should be thinking about this game that I just haven't figured out yet?
The music is gorgeous, though. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

i don't know, i'm not really having trouble with it. i can't play as tempest yet, though - the character who encourages really close bullet-dodging.
when do virtual console games tend to be released? i havn't seen a shop update since i turned on my wii. _________________

All the characters have methods for avoiding bullets in the event that they can't squeeze through gaps - Ruby can dodge through with the right-bumper, Tempest can reflect shots by tapping the right stick, sensei outright negates them with his sword, etc. The game is not about typical shooting game bullet dodging, for the most part. |

I like Omega V, but I do think that the hit box/character size is is a bit large. They either needed to pull back on the camera a tad or size them down. It's not a major problem, but working my way through level 2 now and I find that the giant worm thing is a bit difficult to see coming in. I have a similar problem with the mechanical-ape thing in level 1: i think I'm clear of it's fist, but like, I'm still hit by it.
Minor quibbles here. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

I'm about to download poker smash, which I hear is remarkably good. It's not poker so much as it is panel de pon, but it's poker, too. That's what I hear, anyhow. Someone else play this, too! _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

Holy Crap. Poker Smash is amazing. It's easily the best original puzzle game I've played in years. It seems to fit in every great feature games have ever had too. You can record and share movies, you can buy new gamer pics with points earned in the game, you can unlock, buy, and shuffle skins, your scores are recorded and put on leaderboards shown with an optional leaderboard ticker on the bottom of the screen, and the game itself has really great presentation values (whoever's idea it was to use the World Series of Poker announcer to do the voice acting deserves a raise). I'm tempted to say that this game is an Americanization of the puzzle game in the same way that Guitar Hero was an Americanization of the music genre. It's seriously great.

Which started in America anyway.
PAL wii have been able to get Lords Of Thunder since Friday. I have yet to but my doing so hinges on how the music sounds compared to MEGA CD Lords Of Thunder. _________________

i found time to play poker smash just because all of you are raving about it. i want to like it, but i'm not convinced it's significantly different from panel de pon. i do like that the narrator yells "holy crap" when you get a fifty-match chain. (i was watching a video, not playing.) _________________

I had that issue at first, but this was because my brain was so hard-wired to puzzle league conventions that I just played it as if it were puzzle league, which is possible. Once I actively thought about making good poker hands, bombing cards, and jumping gaps it became much more of its own game.
Wes: I wouldn't call it totally original, though. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

Yeah, it's similar to Puzzle League, but no more than Puzzle Fighter is to Puyo Puyo. The big differences here are that you're not just color matching, you're also looking for hands since they reward a lot more points, and you can slow down time as well as speed it up, and you've got the bomb to instantly clear out any square. There are just a lot more aspects to juggle than usual without overcomplicating things. I like it a lot.

So apparently 4 or 5 trial versions of indie games made in XNA were released yesterday on XBL. Has anyone tried these? If so, what do you think?

There was one of those free XNA games that was pretty good (The Dishwasher) the rest were crap and I hope they don't think they'll get money from a release. It's a huge pain in the ass to download them though.
N+: I was really digging it until I hit a level that doesn't feel balanced at all and it's kind of been like running into a brick wall of difficulty. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

Ikaruga is ... well. It's nice that you can download superplays from most everyone in the top spots. It's pretty intimidating considering that I only played a little bit right after the DC release. I'll get back around to giving it a fair second shot soon. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

I was happy to see Super Mario Bros. 2 Japan on the Virtual Console. I've always wanted to try that.* My first attempt didn't go so well, though. I reached a point in 2-2 where I just couldn't see how to make a certain jump, and I wasted all my lives there. I've since read that Luigi is actually different in that game, so I'll have to try it with him.
I also got Air Zonk, even though I have the HuCard and four (packed away) machines that I can play it on. I guess I just wanted to support the game. I'd do the same for a few other titles if they were to appear (especially since I bought virtually every cartridge-based game in my collection used). I still can't get through the boss rush.
I'm very much looking forward to Earthbound. That was one of those games I always suspected I'd really like in my SNES days but found prohibitively expensive, even used.
The other game I've downloaded so far, which I also already have in real life, is Pokemon Puzzle League. If only they'd re-theme that game--maybe with the fairies from the original Panel de Pon or something.
* I have All-Stars, but could never bring myself to play that version. And I don't generally like playing console games on the computer if there's any alternative. |
