Yup! Microtransactions are the wave of the future, man.

And you know that like you can download demos of everything for free. I'm not a fan of the way Tetris has evolved (TSPIN! ... bullshit) but if you are you'll probably enjoy it.

Not so much, although it may vary by geographical area. They're fairly available in the Bay Area though.

The trick is to show up right after they get delivered -- Target is easiest because it's around noon on weekdays. Then they'll be there for a couple of hours.

So, I just turned on the Wii to check out Sin and Punishment. I have one burning question for all of you...

How the hell are you playing this game?

Note: this is not why you are playing it (as it does look pretty awesome), but seriously... HOW. I brought out my Gamecube controller, because I don't like the classic controller very much, and... on the default controls, you can't even shoot because there is no Z button?!

So, I just tried Control Type 2, which there is a fire button... but everything is placed so awkwardly I cannot imagine it would be fun to play with that button config.

This all being said... What type of control is best and with what setting? Are things a bit more logical with the classic controller?

From another forum:

Quote:
Oh yeah, because there wont be any instructions on controls heres the breakdown on the GC pad:-

Left trigger - shoot \ sword slash
Analogue sticks (either) - aim
Y - move left
X - move right
Right trigger - jump

This guy claims that the GC pad is nicer than the Classic controller, FWIW.

Control Type 3 works pretty well for me on either classic controller or GC. Give it a shot.

Yes, I just finished the game yesterday and it was because of control type 3. Granted I never felt _comfortable_ with it, but it is the best option.

Anyways, if anyone's curious they did alter the game a bit for the US. The attract mode tutorial has been translated as well as the ending text. I initially could tell because of the text not looking quite right (a bit fuzzy) but there is even an added credit in the end credits for it.

Kudos Nintendo, I'm honestly proud of them.

Even the subtitles? I conversed with someone who owns the original and stated that the story ending was in Japanese on his game. They didn't translate the subtitles for the whole game.

They uploaded a version of the game they were going to release in the US back in 2000 before it got canned. The menus, tutorial and credits dialogue are all in english, and Bill Trinen's name is listed in the end credits as translator. The game also has a full listing of the staff responsible for working on the game's localization if you check the operating manual via the home menu.

Interesting! I wonder if this means that Earthbound Zero has a higher chance than other games to get a US "import" release since it was officially translated.

I would say that, considering Sin and Punishment got released on the VC, anything is possible at this point.

Hey i was thinking, since they're going to release neo geo cd games (well some cd system i have no idea what system it is)

and those games are totally huge
do you think they'll have an upgrade where you can actually PLAY games that you've stored on your SD card?

i dont know if im the only person on earth who buys a million VC games, but every time i buy a new one i have to pick the games i like the least and copy them to the SD card and im really fucking sick of copying and erasing and hten copying and erasing AGAIN when i want to play a game

like, really... does anyone know if this will happen?

i was thinking it really should since those games will be HUGE and ill basically have to take EVERYTHING off the system memory to play them

daph, the only reason those games are so huge is because they all had CDDA - if they put it in mp3, then they're suddenly n64-game sized.

still, that still doesnt leave a lot of room on the wii.

especially now since theres more games coming out and people are obviously going to have more than the wii's capacity

being able to play from the memory card would be really wonderful
but this is probably just wishful thinking

i've heard gate of thunder is on the virtual console now. if it's true, that's really neat, both because it's a cd game and because it's a fantastic game.

It IS true!

Regarding the CD comment: honestly, old CD games barely used the space the discs afforded. I think my copy of MK for the Sega CD takes up 32 MB at the very most. If you look online at downloadable Sega CD games, they're usually in the 30–50MB range, which is a far cry from the full 600 MB discs.

Add some audio compression and you start to wonder why anyone used CDs in 1994 at all!

Yeah, I was reading a story recently how devs were handling this and they basically said: "CD audio is the only thing that's big and we're compressing it so that both no one will notice any quality loss and it won't take up much more room than a 64 game." Something similar to that. It was nice that someone actaully said they were doing this.

Anyways, Nintendo will never let that stuff get read off an SD card. If you really want you can put the games you're not playing on one and then just keep the "channels" for the ones you want to play regularly. Think of your SD card as a virtual shelf.

i don't think i like every extend extra extra very much. i did buy it to see whether the features i couldn't access in the demo constituted an actual game. but no, the game really feels more like a screensaver than a game. i never played the psp version, but in the original there was a nice tension between waiting for pieces to align for the best chains and dodging the pieces as they fly (a tension which steadily increases as the player collects quickens). it's just not there in ev.ex.ex.ex. there's just too much stuff on the screen to allow for any kind of strategy; the way you end up playing is exploding, waiting out your ridiculous 1700-hit chain, grabbing as many items as you can in your three seconds of invulnerability, and then exploding before your shield wears off and you're swallowed by the screen-covering sea of flying objects. also you get scores in gigawing levels of ridiculousness.

speedball 2 is up this week too. speedball 2 is such a great game; it's a sports game, about giving and taking control of the ball and using a team to manuever the game toward the opponent's ball. but it moves very quickly, and there's never any doubt about what you should be doing. the weird thing about the demo is that it doesn't even allow you to try out the shiny three-dee graphics that are unique to the xbox version of the game. you can try out the xbox version, but only if it looks exactly the same as the amiga version.

12:23 PM me: Hey, E4 is awful!
12:24 PM anna: yup
me: I never heard you say anything else about it so I went ahead and picked it up... without playing the demo.
12:25 PM UGH!
I was like: "How bad can this game really be? I mean, it IS every extend!"
But like, it's awful! I almost maxed out the score in the shooting mode.
It's horribly boring and simple
12:26 PM It's like Lumines ALL OVER AGAIN!
anna: your timing is kind of funny
12:27 PM because i just today posted about how i decided it was bad
me: Sad
!
It's worse than that! IT's awful.
anna: it's bland and boring
me: Q? should be ashamed of themselves
anna: which is probably the worst thing a game can be
12:28 PM me: Bland and Boring is just the tip of the iceburg with E4
anna: i had assumed it would be like every extend psp, which i never got to play
me: It's a SICK game.
anna: it's not a very deep game, matt
me: OH, EEE is good, and in comparison to this: brilliant!
12:29 PM No, like, this is why E4 is sick, and this is also the same problem with Lumines, but lumines is more entertaining for a while.
:
12:33 PM It's designed around jerking off the player. There's a clearly defined "MAX SCORE" which the game allows the player to think they can reach by making the game "beginner friendly". As the difficulty of the game ramps up you see your numbers go higher in your score and the pace picks up but for some reason it's not exactly... getting HARDER is just quicker and a bit "better" than before. All of a sudden you realize you've been doing this shit for like an hour (in lumines' case you realize it's been 3.5 hours). You think to yourself "I should just hold out, I can max out my score then NEVER touch this game again. It will be easy" but it's not. You die just shy of the max score. You know you were bored, you know it wasn't hard, but the fact that a "complete 100% game" is so close to obtainable, you MIGHT just pick it up again. Everyone loves a good handjob!
Most people haven't maxed out the score of Lumines because it bores the fuck out of them and they turn it off, not because it's too hard.
12:36 PM anna: ok
12:37 PM me: it's the truth
anna: it is a sad truth
me: It actually makes me angry!
12:38 PM anna: it should!
grr!!
me: Ok, like I played it last night from like 2:30 to 3:30 right.
My wife woke up and came to the living room and said: "hey, you're getting much better at this"
12:39 PM I realized instantly that she was referring to Everyday Shooter and I was like "OH FUCK NO, this isn't anything like EDS at all. DOn't insult Jon Mak like that!"

If I ever get to make a huge-budget film where someone goes to hell, say it's a film adaptation of Faust or Orpheus in the Underworld, I'm totally going to make goatse the gate to hell. So there'll be teams of SFX matte people and 3D artists, set painters and compositors working on this massive scene for months and they'll be looking at goatse 9 to 5.

While I'm on the subject, in 2002 there was this installation at the Tate Modern called 'Marsyas' which I thought looked like the world's biggest goatse:

Rear view

2002 seems like a very long time ago. It's amazing to think that goatse still endures as a part of the collective web consciousness long after other fads have come and gone. When did goatse first surface? i honestly wouldn't be surprised to find myself celebrating the goatse 10 year anniversary soon.

exit's on live arcade now. as far as i can tell, it's the exact same game as the psp version. which is disappointing, because although i'd like to like it, it's just too slow-paced.

Which makes it better as a console game than a portable game honestly.

the new mutant storm game is great. rather than a disparate series of unrelated rooms (as in the first game), the stages are actually connected now into large, cohesive areas. smash tv does this, but it's far more orthogonal. these areas are much more interestingly shaped. there are lots of nice setpieces and bosses, and no nag screens between stages in the demo.

there's a chaining system, which awards bonus points when you shoot a certain number of enemies of the same color. each source of enemies produces a different color, though, so if you chain one set of enemies that means you're ignoring another stream, which is gathering and firing at you. the amount of enemies you need to shoot for a chain, too, varies depending on the size and strength of the enemy. you might only need to shoot four huge enemy turrets to get a bonus, for example, but they'll be paired with four different-colored turrets that will be firing at you as you focus on their siblings.

two-player co-op.

the achievements are divided between the incredibly easy and the incredibly difficult, which doesn't really help anything. you'll get half on your first playthrough and the other half maybe never?
