nectaris! the pce port of r-type is groovy but it's probably just there for nostalgia value, given how many pces it sold. i assume they're going to put up the second half of the game at some point, but they might not even have to.

They might just put the PCE CD version up, or maybe even (oh, the irony!) the complete US Hu-Card. I know if I was in Japan, I'd be pissed if I had to buy the game in two halves.

Hey... what's a good TG16 emulator?

isn't the first half all you need anyway? it's got the giant battleship stage!

has there been any word on super-cds on the virtual console? i'm kind of doubtful because of size issues.

the cd version of r-type has an amazing remix of the stage one music.

magic engine is about as complete an emulator as you probably need, though it's not free. unless you have means, of course.

I thought that when Nintendo announced TG-16 emulation, CD games were part of the mix. I remember them saying something to that effect, but everyone and their mother was hoping for a download of Rondo of Blood.

I played the first level of SSS the other day (good ol' VC auto-saving); I really liked it. It feels very focused and tight.

HuGo is an alternative that works slightly better on a very small number of games.

Magic Engine pisses me off. On the one hand, it's a damn good emulator.

On the other hand, no third party has the right to charge money for a piece of software that works by emulating games that other people made; the fact that the games' original developers never saw a penny from the majority of the emulator's users while the games were in print just makes it an especially weasely thing to do.

The official Nintendo Press Release lists Donkey Kong Jr. as a Super Nintendo game. Nice job.

Wow, that is the least exciting / most disappointing list they could have published. Despite my longing to know what was going to be hitting the Virtual Console next - I almost wish they hadn't released that.

In Japan, obviously.

Also, what the hell. Who would pay $8 for Columns Sad

Still, Ristar is a pretty good addition. That game is tits.

No, I'm pretty sure you're thinking of Baseball, Soccer, Pinball, and Altered Beast. They can't (or probably won't) release a set without at least one good game at this point. I mean, we already know what they're going to release in the US for the rest of the year, it's just a question of which games at what time.

I've never played it... what separates it from other typical platformers? Judging based upon it's Wikipedia article, it doesn't seem that special.

It's hard to explain. There's this sense of momentum that you get while traversing through the game that makes it feel better than Sonic sometimes, in my opinion, and unlike Sonic, it hasn't been bastardized with sequels.

Stretchy arms. Swinging. Grabbing from a good distance. I personally don't think its that great, always felt like it controlled poorly.

I used to play it on my Game Gear before I knew what I was doing, because I was eight. Same with Dynamite Headdy. I didn't understand either one very well. Are the Game Gear versions the same as the Genesis ones?

(Also, did anybody else a) have a Game Gear? and b) play a game called Chuck Rock on it?)

With Ristar, at least, the Game Gear version was kind of dumbed down if I remember correctly. I can honestly say that I've never played Dynamite Headdy so I wouldn't know about that one, but the name reminds me of Decapp Attack.

Dynamite Headdy was dumbed down too. It kinda plays the same but everything takes up way too much screen real estate and feels a lot less impressive without all of the cool special effects of the Genesis version.

It's like Mario + bionic commando, basically. Level design isn't perfect but I think I like it a good deal more than Sonic (which has a similar visual style).

Ristar = wonderful graphics/music, pretty good gameplay. It's definitely (edit: probably) buyable for $8, despite it being released on all those sonic collections.

Quote:
Uhh, what are they again? (VC games left for release this year)

Ice Hockey, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Dungeon Explorer, Gunstar Heroes, and Toe Jam & Earl are the good games left for release. Baseball, Tennis and Urban Champion constitute the filler. Although, I really like Urban Champion for some reason. Better just leave it at Baseball and Tennis then.

I dont understand how all the NES/SNES Super Mario games have escaped the list so far.

Is it a ploy to make people buy more GBAs?! My girlfriend wants her SMB3, dammit.

You could probably find it for less, even. I remember seeing carts upon carts of the game when Toys R' Us was liquidating its Genesis titles, but this was a few years ago and I didn't have a Genesis at the time so I didn't actually get to play the game until I got Mega Collection Plus last year.

It goes without saying that if you have a working genesis/megadrive/whatever on-hand there's no reason to use the virtual console.

It is my wish that through the Virtual Console I can play different versions of certain games in one spot; for example, Street Fighter. I would love to finally be able to play the PC Engine version of Street Fighter II CE.

I'm thinking Nintendo just looked at the titles and decided 'Alien' was less potentially offensive than 'Devil'.

Actually, this is the second game I will buy for the Wii... mostly because I haven't spent anywhere near as much time with it as Devil's Crush.

Then again, I'll buy Devil's Crush in a hearbeat too.

What, you didn't buy Ristar again?

Sega needs to get their lawyer shit together. Word on the street (or perhaps fully fabricated by me) is that what's keeping them from releasing Streets of Rage in all of these collections is some sort of lawsuit over the music. That's bullshit. Settle out of court and let me kick some ass!

I'm actually debating on buying a composite upscaler (a really good one) which will cost less than re-buying all my games on the VC!

i really don't know where you're getting "underwhelmed" from, honestly.

you guys really have some immediate need to buy mario world again?

duck hunt and 5-player bomberman are both tricky things to emulate. i'm very happy with buying either, and that's an average of one game a month!

With Ethoscapade on this. Any excuse to put built-in tg16 emulation on a massively popular platform seems like a good thing to me.

Edit: Gunstar Heroes, Alien Crush/Dungeon Explorer & probably Ice Hockey tomorrow!
