I hear it's getting updated at 11am CST this week.
GUNSTAR HEROES, ALIEN CRUSH, MEAN BEAN MACHINE, AND ICE HOCKEY...
This week's Virtual Console update is A-OK with me. _________________ Wii #: 8749 9109 9732 3653

When I was younger, I had Dr. Robtnik's Mean Bean Machine and could never get past one of hte levels (I think it was level 5, the robot had wheels). A few months ago I was at a party where someone had the Sonic Mega Plus Super Collection with that game and I loaded it up, and sure enough, I still can't get past that same boss. ;_; |

It hasn't even been announced for release this year (which means that it'll totally be available on christmas day as a SPECIAL SURPRISE)! Also I can't tell if you're serious! |

That's my charm? Yes, I am serious. A surprise would be nice, I just want the freaking thing. And Ninja Spirit! Come on here, people!
I wonder... if they released Dragon Warrior IV, would I get it? I think I might, at least to try. |

NINTENDO NEWS: FOUR NEW CLASSIC GAMES ANNOUNCED FOR WII SHOP CHANNEL
Dec. 11, 2006
Later today Nintendo will add four new classic games to the popular Wii™ video game system's Wii Shop Channel. The four new titles will be added at 9 a.m. Pacific time. Nintendo will add new games to the channel every Monday. Wii owners with a high-speed Internet connection can redeem Wii Points to download the games. Wii Points can be purchased in the Wii Shop Channel or at retail outlets. This week's new games are:
Ice Hockey (NES®, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Ice Hockey is hard-hitting, fast-action competition that re-creates all the excitement of the sport from faceoffs to penalty shots. Players pass the puck and shoot to score while using defensive tactics, including fake shots and ice brawls to crush adversaries. It's up to the player to find the best strategy to win the game – finesse or power.
Gunstar Heroes™ (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points): The Gunstar 9 planet was peaceful for many years until the vicious dictator, Colonel Red, kidnapped the Gunstar twins' older brother and used mind control to make him his slave. Players face many different enemies and bosses while battling to stop the dictator from unleashing "Golden Silver the Destructor" with apocalyptic consequences.
Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine™ (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points):
Dr. Robotnik is stamping out music and fun in Mobius with his giant robotizing Mean Bean Steaming Machine. Before he turns all the citizens of Beanville into robots, players must save the day by gathering up beans in matching colors and defeating Robotnik's guards.
Alien Crush™ (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points): Alien Crush is a fan-favorite pinball game that features a sinister sci-fi theme. Play through a two-level playing field that comes to life with pulsating alien creatures. Rack up a high enough score, clear the board of these extraterrestrials and discover secret bonus stages. The game features realistic pinball action, complete with a tilt function and two selectable soundtracks. Do you have what it takes to fight back against this alien infestation?

I don't know if Ice Hockey makes me want to covet or cry. I have that on cartridge somewhere but don't know if I really want to pay additional money to replay it on the Wii. I'll have to think about that some. _________________ PSN: Twitch_City ||| Wii: 8083 5371 5767 6700

OK, so I just downloaded Gunstar Heroes. Looks pretty sweet! As a first-timer (but Contra buff), is there any recommendations about which gunset to use/playing style (locked/free aim)/difficulty level?
I'm pretty excited about the game!
Also: have any of you played the Mean Bean Machine? It looks alot like Dr. Mario.... which can be good because Dr. Mario is a super party game. What is the verdict?
edit: and.. oh yeah, i succumbed and downloaded Ice Hockey. Damn. _________________ PSN: Twitch_City ||| Wii: 8083 5371 5767 6700

It's pretty much just Puyo Puyo with a Sonic theme. _________________

That is what I keep reading... The problem therein: I have never played, nor know what Puyo Puyo is.
I'm assuming it is a foundational puzzle game? (the only games in the genre I ever had as a kid was Dr. Mario and Tetris and some bizarre Japan 100-games-in-1 import cartridges) _________________ PSN: Twitch_City ||| Wii: 8083 5371 5767 6700

Is Ice Hockey still as awesome as I remember it was?
Btw, Gunstar Heroes Contra mode is just Free aiming and the first machine gun. _________________ Wii #: 8749 9109 9732 3653

It's very much a Tetris variant. Basically, two coloured blobs fall down the screen which you can spin around. Match 4 or more blobs of the same colour together and they will dissapear and junk will be sent over to the other players screen. The trick is to set your field up so you can get some combos going on and really screw up the other players screen, and sometimes you'll encounter a few surprises. It's fun! One of the more popular Tetris variants, one of my favourites, but I don't like the Mean Bean interpretation too much because I think the characters are ugly... but it plays the same. _________________

Yeah.... I reluctantly will claim that Ice Hockey is still my favourite hockey videogame. By far. It is so much fun. I can't believe how oddly nostalgic but weird it is to play it on a 19" color TV - so different than when I first played it for hours on end (old television set with horrid colour - made everything some shade of green that was maybe 8")
I also downloaded Robotnik... and I quite like it. My only beef with it at the moment is that I can't get past the second stage. The computer moves so frigging quickly - I don't know how I am supposed to compete. It is INSANE.
That being said - I am totally addicted. _________________ PSN: Twitch_City ||| Wii: 8083 5371 5767 6700

Are you learning how to set up combos? That's really the key in the original puyo puyo, building long chains and setting them off. I could give some basic examples if you'd like. |

Ahhh, I've gotten the hang of it. I've beaten the game on Normal difficulty.. and now at level 10 on Hard. And it is getting ridiculous - I'll quadruple chain the asshole and still they somehow find a way to combo out of it and screw me. It is.... awesome.

The official Nintendo Press Release site hasn't been updated yet... so I guess, your guess is as good as mine (see: http://press.nintendo.com/loginSplash.jsp in case they do update it beforehand). _________________ PSN: Twitch_City ||| Wii: 8083 5371 5767 6700

The definites according to the Hudson/Sega websites are Space Harrier II and Military Madness. Man, the TG16 side of things is pretty good so far, huh?
Based on what Nintendo's got left to release, that leaves two really terrible NES games! Probably Urban Champion and Tennis. |

We already have Urban Champion available in Australia. I didn't buy it!
Our initial line-up was pretty terrible. Altered beast, Ecco, Sonic, Donkey Kong Country, f-Zero, Zelda, Warios Woods... well ok, I guess it's not too bad, but I already had most of these titles.
Now we have Gunstar Heroes and a few other good titles so things are looking up, but we don't have any PC Engine games yet. I wonder if we'll miss out? _________________

Was the PC Engine ever released here? I think that's the defining factor on whether we do or do not get PCE games. _________________

Well, here is the Australian VC line-up for the rest of the month:
http://www.nintendo.com.au/nintendo/news/index.php
Nothing too exciting... and it really looks like we're not getting PC-Engine games. Someone needs to find a work around for this or something.
Also! Other people looking at that list, which games on there should I show interest in? I already got Zelda, Sonic (which I already own but I felt like playing it on my Wii), Gunstar Heroes (which I own but haven't opened because I haven't modded my PS2 yet), and Warios Woods.
Also, are there any 64 games apart from Mario available anywhere?
I'll write reviews of the ones I downloaded later, even though it's not like anyone hasn't played them before. _________________

Chris Kohler did on his Wired blog. He confirmed that it's possible to buy wii points using an american credit card using a japanese wii, so if you really really want to pay however much a japanese wii costs just for the privelege of being able to play the 10 or so games that Japan has that we will never get, by all means go ahead.
Also the fact that australia is getting Castlevania IV and Contra III before the end of the year seems to indicate that the US might get those as well? |

this week's releases are tennis, space harrier II, and military madness... kind of lame. I assume (or uh, hope) they are saving up some awesomeness for xmas.
is space harrier II any good? I haven't heard of military madness. I reckon wii tennis pretty much satiated all of my tennis needs... on the other hand maybe you can move your dudes around in this one. _________________ where were you when nana komatsu got a wii? |

it's probably the best console strategy game ever? you can play any single-player map two-player, but that means your forces won't quite be balanced. there are good times to be had, though! _________________

I remember having a good time playing Tennis on my NES. I was 7, but I still remember having a good time with it.
I hear Military Madness is really good, but I've been burned by a ton of my virtual console purchases. Namely; Bomberman and Ristar because Bomberman needs at least 4 friends and Ristar just plain sucks. _________________ Wii #: 8749 9109 9732 3653

It's definitely worth $5 less than they're charging for it on the virtual console! Actually, it probably isn't. It's really not good.
Diagnosis: buy Military Madness. Hudson is putting up good games fairly consistently and deserves your microtransactions.
Edit: Nevermind! That's... kind of terrible! |

Ok, I broke down last night. I bought Alien Crush because I just wanted something to mess with for 15 minutes and my shopping channel was actually working. I still had 400 points left over from buying Super Star Soldier (which I still can’t beat) and after buying Alien Crush I had 800 points left over.
God help me, but I actually bought Gunstar Heroes again because I had the points sitting there. It looks really, really good in 480p. If I had to guess I would say that it looks slightly better than in 480p on the PS2. The audio is still off for the emulation, but even though I noticed it right away after about 30 min with the game I couldn’t hear it anymore.
Anyways, now I remember why I never put much time in with Alien Crush: it only has a single table. Oh well, it will be nice to mess with and I’m glad I have a few options for games for people over the holidays. Also, Genesis games look really fantastic and put the Turbo games to shame. I didn’t think that they looked that bad until I had something to compare them to. The oddest part is that with the PCE-Duo hooked up through composite to my TV it looks the best of all three systems. It’s a shame the emulation looks the worst. _________________ “The average man has a secret desire to be a swaggering, drunken, fighting, raping swashbuckler.”

This is ridiculous and that would never happen.
Because down here we don't have 7-11's. So more likely it would be behind a circle K.
Oh, for what it's worth Mario 64 DS came free with my DS when I bought it, so it's not THAT bad... as long as you don't count that I bought it once on my first wii and then I bought it again on the replacement. _________________ where were you when nana komatsu got a wii? |

Is anyone else dissapointed with the stuff that comes with VC games? I mean, Zelda originally came with a map, right? Wouldn't it be good to include that with the VC version as a reference for players and stuff. Also, half the manual is missing _________________

Got to see this bug today and it's certainly not game breaking. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if it was in the original (it's been a loooooooooong time since I've played it). Anyways, the game hasn't aged that gracefully, but for some reason I'm still finding myself enjoying it. I need to relearn unit priority and everything, but beyond that I'm having a good time. It's a hard game that doesn't give much feedback and isn't very forgiving, but it seems to have a pretty nice balance to it. It's nice to try a mission once and totally bomb it only to try it again right after and destroy the opponent.
All in all it's worth downloading to see where Advance Wars got its inspiration, but beyond that you're probably ok ignoring it.

Advance Wars didn't get its inspriation from Nectaris/Military Madness. It's a consolefied wargame, yes, but Nectaris sticks close to the hex-tastic source material, while Advance Wars is a straight sequel to the Famicom Wars series, which consisted of, again, consolefied wargames, but with a completely different approach. Hell, Famicom Wars came out a year before Nectaris, and even then it was a completely different game that was more about money and unit management than the tactics-heavy Nectaris. They're both very good games, and they play considerably differently. Advance Wars is significantly more enjoyable just on the merits of its stylistic and aesthetic qualities, but dismissing Nectaris like you did seems kind of unfair, considering the quality of its gameplay. |

if this is your first time playing nectaris, you should know that the key is positioning. nfg has a pretty good guide that should help you get started. _________________

Interesting! Well my personal experiences playing Military Madness was the inspiration for my personal playing of Advance Wars, so I guess I was right in a Gamer's Quarter sort of way.
Also strange: My cell phone broke so I've been totin' the N-Gage around lately, which has given me more time to play High Seize, which is also pretty much the same thing as Military Madness/Advance Wars. Crazy!
