So I'm anxiously awaiting the Xbox 360 news to be unveiled any moment now in Spain. I've heard certain rumours and I'm hoping to hell they're true.

That being said, the fact that you lucky fucks with 360s can go online today and play mutliplayer online Doom just kills me. I fucking want to get a system yet again. I absolutely love the port of Ultimate Doom/Doom II that came with the special edition of Doom 3 for Xbox—Doom still constitutes some of my best deathmatch moments, and this port is PC-perfect and controls like a dream on the original 'box.

But now I'm envious, because I can't play my version online, and over-the-'tron, full-screen classic Doom is some of the greatest shit ever as far as I'm concerned.

Lots of amazing shit happened today that makes me happy to own an Xbox (and thus, happy to be an American). Check this shit out:

Peter Jackson Working on New Halo Game

Halo RTS by Ensemble Studios, creators of the "Age of Empires" franchise announced

Two Exclusive GTA4 Eposides Coming to 360 Live

Unnannounced Splinter Cell an Xbox 360 Exclusive

BioShock No Longer Coming to PS3 (At Launch)

Project Gotham Racing® 4

The beloved "Banjo-Kazooie®" franchise will breathe new, high-definition life on Xbox 360 exclusively from famed developer Rare Ltd

PC/360 Cross-Platform Marvel MMO Coming from Microsoft Game Studios

Doom is Live on Xbox Live Now and Sensible World of Soccer is coming

360 HD-DVD for $200 in U..S. bundled with the Universal Pictures' blockbuster film Peter Jackson's "King Kong" on HD DVD and the Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote.

Peter Jackson is one of my all-time favorite directors, so to hear he's working on a Halo game is almost enough to talk me into playing all the way through the games in single player!

Banjo Tooie was awesome! But you're mostly right - if it's anything like Kameo it will blow. Rare needs someone to keep an eye on their style.

360 HD-DVD for $200 in U..S. bundled with the Universal Pictures' blockbuster film Peter Jackson's "King Kong" on HD DVD and the Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote.

Both of these are pretty underhanded.

First, why the need to state what someone else isn't getting. Second, MS previously said $150 for the HD DVD. At this point the 360 is much more expensive than the ps3 to become compairable and it is gimped in comparison:

Code:
PS3                    360
Wifi                     Wifi
60GBHD              20GB
1080p                  720p
Next Gen Video     Next Gen video

$600                   $700

The PS3 isn't looking like such a rip off as much as the 360 is.

I am talking about to get the same package. Either way I'm not investing in next-gen video equiptment.

I'd just as soon get a standalone player once they become cheap/affordable.

Also way to copy your news from Kotaku, Wes.

I should also mention that XBLA Doom supports up to 1080i resolution—pretty nice if you're playing split-screen!

Shit, I'm going to go play my Xbox 1 copy of Doom and pretend like I have a 360 and three loving friends... *sniff*

Holy Crap

Guitar Hero 2 for the 360 with theoretically wireless controllers and downloadable songs.

That's just as significant as any of the other announcements they've made.

I think it's safe to assume that the game you get with the controller is the same as the PS2 version. Actually, it's probably just a higher resolution version of that version this year with the real visual upgrade due some time next year.

As an aside: Nobody is dumb enough to release a $50+ disc of nothing (not even Sony). It just wouldn't be worth the development effort to make something destined to be so completely and utterly niche. I'm guessing that GTHD is going to be either a discless download or a $10-20 limited-car demo disc that allows you to expand the game however you want. Charging a'la cart could be a VERY bad thing for Sony if people don't feel like their downloads are worth what they're being charged. They'd make more money selling a $50 version with all of the cars to millions of people than a $20 version with no cars that people spend an average of $80 in downloads to 500,000 people or a $60 version with no cars that people spend $300 in downloads to 10,000 people.

What would be really clever is if they packed the barebones version on the console's HD and made the bulk of the content a la carte.

On another note, holy shit Assassin's Creed. When's the release date for this? The Xbox is finally justifying itself to me. Wow, does this both look visually and mechanically impressive.

parkour + third crusade = yes. I don't know why this formula wasn't discovered sooner.

I really liked the look of the sword combat. Although it was limited in the demo, the idea of parrying (emphasis seemed to be on weight) and auto shifting to attackers has me excited. Is it really scheduled for a January release? That's just right for me.

And I think Doom is going to be the first Live title I buy. I've never actually bought it, just the shareware version many (many) years ago ... wow, has it already been 10 years? That's kind of depressing. But, it sure did feel good to get back into it. My moderate budget is eager for more games!

Aw, I still hugely want to play Assassin's Creed but that video just made it look like the technology still isn't there. The NPCs still wander randomly; doing 180s and pinioning around on a point looking silly. The "pushing people out of the way" mechanic doesn't seem that special (can't you even do that in GTA3?) although the guy playing it was clearly loving it; the assassin looked like he was participating in a mosh pit and no one seemed to care much.

The climbing is YES though. That's what Shadow of the Collossus needed, and precise collision detection.

Next February, and yes, it is shaping up to be the shizzle. I think they're doing something weird with the story though, like in the way Kojima did something weird with the story in MGS2. I'm not sure how much I care about that though, as long as I get to play as a Third Crusade assassin who can climb buildings and stuff.

Also, it comes out the same month as God of War II! So, that's like, $100+ I know I'll be blowing that month.

While the demonstration leaves me impressed on a game that I had otherwise pretty much no previous interest in, it also leaves a weird taste in my mouth.

First the words "new franchise" were used.
Second, they "built the game around freedom" yet the horse and path to the city was obviously on a point A to point B type trail.
Three, didn't one of our staff already do an article about how PoP was already like Freestyle Running? It struck me weird that they brought that up for this game.

Anyways, the game looks much better than I thought it would and it looks like it even has a bit of... dare I say, bushido blade to it? Good stuff.

Funny how that doesn't even bother me any more. I feel like Ubisoft, even more than EA, is the king of franchising. If something is profitable for them, they make a series of it, with really no exceptions. Even Beyond Good & Evil, created by their Ancel himself and intended as a series, got dropped. But Rayman and PoP/Assassin's Creed will keep going forever.
Quote:

I think the freedom has to do more with the city itself. I was actually surprised to see a countryside segement at all; I'd thought the whole thing was just taking place in one large city. But this team is nothing if not completely influenced by Ueda (think Ico --> PoP), so then I realized it was just to get in Agro and the rule of thirds. I'm not sure if I like the latter so much in a game which requires more precision like this, but the camera did seem to center itself a little when off the horse.
Quote:

I think that was always the intention for the PoP series, and going "next-gen" (I feel funny saying that phrase without quotation marks, by the way) they wanted something more fluid? I'm all for it; I think 3D platformers tend to be unfortunately hung up on gravity and a purely vertical sense of things. Wasn't the best part of the Sonic Adventures always running down the side of a building?

Assassin's Creed: The second reason to get a 360. The only reason to get a PS3. So thank god it's coming out for PC too.

It looks good, but I hate that rule of thirds thing that it and SotC do. It looks nice and all when you're riding straight, but when I want to turn right and my vision to the right is completely cut off, it's just plain annoying.

I'm going to be way too poor for this generation. I think I'll just upgrade my PC.

To play all the games I missed this last generation, that is. All it really needs is more RAM, a new video card, and a little love.

Oh, I get it.

I mean generally speaking PC gaming is morbidly more expensive than console gaming, unless of course you play the wait 3 or 4 years till shit gets cheap game.

That's what I did when I was in college, so yeah.

Oh, I get it.

I mean generally speaking PC gaming is morbidly more expensive than console gaming, unless of course you play the wait 3 or 4 years till shit gets cheap game.

That's what I did when I was in college, so yeah.

Except now that we're being charged $600 per console, PC gaming starts to make a little more sense. (Note that the linked system build totally outperforms mine (except for RAM), on which I still happily play current releases).

are we talking rule of thirds as in the frame composition rule of thirds? I haven't thought of the Agro sections in this way, but it's interesting. Simplicio or Swimmy, does either one of you want to expand on those sentences?

I always had to take manual control of the camera to raise it so I could see what I was doing anyway.

Ha, I'm not sure what happened with the misquote. You can clearly see the tag was meant to be Shaper!

Well, you can see for yourself. SotC's characters tend to stay in the bottom corners of the scene. It works there because of the generally open environment (and the way Agro will direct himself through it); it helps magnify the scale of both the environment and the colossi. Assassin's Creed seems to make more dubious usage of it though. That's a game which is going to require precision which may be hindered by odd camera angles, and whereas SotC's cameras had a defined purpose, AC's seem to just be thrown in there cause it looks cool.
