I never thought I'd be asking this question. I can't believe I'm asking this question. Anyway:

Is there anything special about the hard drive that comes with the Xbox 360? Can I just buy a SATA drive and stick it in a core system? Why else should I buy a non-Core system if I don't care about the DVI cable or the wireless controller?

Yeah! The hard drive is proprietary. You can't use your own hard drive. Sorry! Bill's kids gotta eat!

That's unsurprising, retarded, and disappointing.

The reason I ask is that if I buy a Japanese Xbox 360 to play Idolm@ster, the core system in Japan is coming bundled with N3 and a racing game, but I'd also need the hard drive.

Now I'm thinking I should go back to not buying one at all.

But think of all the faceplates you'd be missing out on!

Okay so here's another question: The hard drive with the pro system is 20GB, but there's starting to be a lot of crap you can download from Live. My understanding is game demos are getting pretty big (up to 1gb each?), so are people running into capacity issues with their drives?

Well, some of them do. But I have like 8 demos on my HD, about 10 movies, and 10 Live Arcade games. I could probably remove most of the movies and all but 1 of the demos and be happy. But I still have like 5 gigs left. I don't have any problems and I always have more than enough things I am willing to erase if I needed more room.

I ran into a few problems with space a while back, but I cleared off all of my mp3s and started streaming them from my computer to get a bit more room. I don't think you'll run into issues as long as you delete any demos you don't play anymore, but if you're going to be big into MMORPGs it might become a problem. I know Final Fantasy XI takes up something like 5 Gigs by itself (I'm not sure if some of the game is left on the disc or not), but generally if you get rid of stuff you don't want and stream non-game related files from a computer you shouldn't be too worried.

I guess that's good to know. Don't get me started on MP3 streaming, though.

I just use my iPod for mp3s on the 360
