I had one or two of these as a kid, and I always remember them as being TOTALLY SO COOL because they were about video games and they even had game tips in between chapters even though you had to turn the book upside down to read them and the video rental place on the corner doesn't actually have blaster master but it's still totally cool.

After reading the hilarious excerpts, I'm tempted to go dig around in the basement for a bit to see if we still have them somewhere. Has anybody else ever read one of them?

It would be interesting to give one of these to someone who'd never played the game in question, and then get them to describe how they imagine the actual game would play.

Holy shit! I remember these. *SPOILER* In Blaster Master we discover that all the various bosses you fight are actually other kids' mutated pets, just like your poor froggy. And Mega Man became human for some reason. Crazy stuff.

There are, what, 5 Blaster Master games? I think? 1 NES, 1 Genesis, 2 GB, and 1 PS--the 3D one. Which I see everywhere, if anyone's ever looking for a copy. Aside from the awful load times, it's really good.

And these books come up once in a while. I never got a chance to read one, but what excerpts are on the internet are hilarious.

That Worlds of Power novel on dess's website makes me wonder if my soul tastes like cherry pop.

(Edit - after further reading, this thing pretty much resembles stereotypical fanfiction, cheesy romantic subplot and all. Pretty interesting.)

From what I hear, they're all pretty terrible except for the NES and PSX iterations.

I have the Genesis one, anyway, and boy is that shit rancid.

The Playstation Blaster Master is pretty horrible, too. Not even for interesting reasons, either. Just shitty controls and bland everything.

i think it's actually really amazing. the relationship between the upstanding but aloof hero and the hero (who is slowly being possessed by the prince of darkness) and the skeptical but socially inept kid is actually really endearing in that it seems out of a television sitcom from some bizarro world where nes games are primetime television.

also at around the time THANATOS LORD OF DEATH shows up the writing goes over-the-top crazy.

According to an oddly timely article on 1up, the Worlds of Power Blaster Master book was officially inducted into game canon when the Playstation game included a character that previously only existed in the Worlds of Power book.

Interesting!

I think it is!

Curiosity got the better of me, so I tracked down and tried the PlayStation one. It's kind of fun, in its own weird way. I wish the hero's sister would shut up, though. The game would be so much better if she wasn't trying to tell you something every couple of seconds. She's almost as bad as Roll in Mega Man Legends (though at least she doesn't have that kind of creepy sister/girlfriend ambiguity going on. Yet.)
