I wanted to smack him around so bad. After one quest, I heard him call me a fucker on air. Control...rage... Damn lucky he's surrounded by the brotherhood. I can't fight them - where else am I going to trade in shitty sensors and laser pistols for simpacks and grenades?

Outcasts?

Is there a store at Tenpenny? I've not been by to collect my next magnificent outfit, yet.

I've only ran into outcasts once. They were a shade rude, and then promptly ambushed by the brotherhood and then some super mutants. They left some nice loot though. I'm going to put off completing the story as long as possible. I hate the thought of giving up my character. I listened to an interview with Emil and Pete from Bethesda and they said they were genuinely surprised people wanted to keep playing with the same character. They said the original idea was for the player to die and end the story, but that was more of an interesting concept than anything that would've worked out well. I run around in Oblivion with my super duper swordmage whenever I play it, so I'm reluctant to give up my crazy asshole guy who has a 100 in small guns, science, and repair. I believe my title is Harbinger of War.

I keep reading that. I'm putting it off as long as possible. Somehow, I've only managed to pick up a handful of the quests. I think I spend too much time wandering around and killing mercs.

haha - will do!

I've maxed out four skills already. I should be able to max out one more my next level up. If I choose the tag perk, then two more. From the achievements, I can tell there are a lot more quests to do, I'm just not sure where they exactly are. Ah, I'll just drag it out some more.

I maxed out my character last night and I fear I'm coming up on the endgame. I'm sort of rushing toward it because after 30 hours I feel like I've done enough. Still, for a game that I pretty much only bought because I REALLY wanted that awesome lunchbox it's damn good. I'm really looking forward to whatever expansion ups the level cap.

They're doing it again. Need Fallout 2 disc (or equivalent).

"The game is set in 2238, 3 years before Fallout 2. The world has been expanded and includes both the Fallout and Fallout 2 game areas."

Yes it is time to re-install that gem.

Where did I put that disc?

More Choice And consequence than FO3.

They are attempting to bridge the gap between casual player and jaded curmudgeons.

I'm curious about this. "Hardcore Mode" seems like a band-aid on top of a carebear twitch-fest, but I'll give it a chance.
I have no doubt it will be good for what it is.

Fallout 3 was kind of not that great overall but I really enjoyed exploring the wasteland enough that I spent probably upwards of 80 hours on the game. Hearing that Obsidian was doing the followup has me pretty hopeful because I hear the writing and RPG stuff was like the best part of Alpha Protocol (for people who like story and RPG stuff). I'm thinking if anything at least New Vegas should be more humorous than Fallout 3.

I also like how they're adding a hardcore mode because Fallout 3 was way too easy, even on the harder difficulty settings. When I eventually do play New Vegas it'll probably be on this mode, because a post-apocalyptic wasteland should be about survival overall. The need to survive was kind of toyed around with in Fallout 3, but I think Bethesda was too scared of alienating casual players to really follow through on it.

Also maybe this time around it won't be possible to max every single stat just through normal play. That might be hoping for too much though.

I liked Fallout 3 a lot, but Obsidian being on the project is the only thing that scares me. They seem like talented people, but they have yet to actually finish a game before releasing it. KOTOR 2, Alpha Protocol, and Neverwinter Nights 2 were all released long before they were finished. I want New Vegas to be good, that's why I asked about it, but there will be no way to know for sure until it is released.

Yeah I haven't actually played any games by Obsidian myself (though I do intend to check out Alpha Protocol at some point) but I figure since they're using the Fallout 3 engine then the game should at least be as technically competent as that game. Meaning, they aren't starting entirely from scratch if they're using F3 as a template of sorts. Hopefully this means New Vegas won't be any more buggy than F3.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/10/21/wot-i-think-fallout-new-vegas/

Hmmm yeah I'm thinking I'll sit this one out for the time being. Maybe I'll grab Fallout 3 GOTY version off Steam during the next sale period. Never did play any of the DLC. I bet New Vegas will be worth checking out in a year or so, after it's been patched up some and the mod community have had time to make a "real" hardcore mode.

Then again the comments section is chock full of people wondering what game Quinns played and why they disagree with him so much so I'm kind of torn here.

Anyone been playing it? Would love to hear some thoughts on what y'all think about it.

i think quinns is mostly wrong in that, especially as he liked fallout 3. it's much more fallout-y (isfet would agree with me on this point, dunno if sb is up on this title yet) and while there's stuff that's weird (hardcore isn't very hardcore, really) it's such a step up that it's about as good as we'll get for the series, i think.

and i've had no bugs, but others have, so ymmv.

edit: i should also add that the rps commentariat usually isn't quite so bugfuck insane, or maybe it's just that wulf guy sucking up all the oxygen in the room. but holy hell agree or disagree it's just a fucking post.

This pretty well echos my experience with the game so far. I liked Fallout 3, and this seems to be a more unimaginative version of it. I mean, it's great that your decisions have weight to them and that you can cut off entire quest threads, but it doesn't really affect me since I'll never replay the game to see what the alternative would have been. I'd much rather have one path through the game that's actually interesting than 2 that are shit.

I'm still playing, but it sort of feels like work.

too much jrpg rots yer brain, yo. Smile

seriously though, everything you don't like is everything i feel is beautiful about the dying wrpg genre. choices and consequences, yo. and since you only play once (as do i, unless i really enjoy a game*) you get an even more unique experience.

plus the writing is tons better - obsidian for all their faults (which can be many, or perhaps even legion har dee har har) write better material than any other rpg-making outfit in existence.**

* i might replay nv as a really evil fuck next time through, rather than a making the best of a bad situation type.

** here's hoping age of decadence and doublebear's upcoming dead state prove me wrong on that, though.

Whoa this is really the case? I'm suddenly a lot more interested now.

There's a thread on select button now as well with some more thoughts on the game and now I'm considering getting it sooner rather than later.

dhex, did you ever figure out how to make the game not stutter?

You could try meta-gaming it.

Lure monsters (strong ones) to faction areas to soften things up, then loot.

etc

Like exploiting the broken AI in Oblivion.

Yeah, I don't dislike the multiple quest chains, I just think the place you do them in is boring. I'm sure I'd have no problem if it was interesting, but the world and people in it are too mundane.

i'm actually having a decent time with it on my pc, which isn't particularly new. 4gigs ram seems to help, as well as having a lot of vid memory. the engine is a piece of shit, though.

one of the things i like about new vegas is that it's more believable as a wasteland precisely because it is empty and there's a bunch of evil shit out there. the first and last time i ran into a deathclaw (i've been avoiding them) i ended up trying to run away and accidentally jumped off a cliff. that was kinda awesome.

i'm not one to put a tremendous amount of effort into apologeticas for fields and companies i don't work for, but there is some truth to the rhubarb about obsidian getting shat upon for sins bethesda committed because obsidian doesn't have the cachet bethesda does.*

it's about reputation management. obsidian got stuck with some raw deals, and delivered some raw deals of their own. for good or ill, they have a rep as a gang of energetic fuckups. my hope is that they'll get enough of a push from this to repair some of their reputation and be able to continue to make more delightful overreaches as the spam in between the wheat bread of bioware and bethesda.

full disclaimer: i really enjoyed alpha protocol.

* not the money angle though cause a) bethesda/zeni max is still the publisher and presumably buys space to push their products and b) i saw a fucking new vegas commercial on tv. money was spent.

Hey yeah this is pretty good. Just spent three hours doing the opening quests in Goodsprings. Ringo didn't make it :( I have a feeling that if he had there might have been more to follow up on with him but maybe not.

So far it's like Fallout 3 but with better writing/voice acting. The new crafting systems are a nice touch as well. Am playing on hardcore mode because why the hell not. It's not really that difficult, just a few more variables to keep track of and healing isn't instant. Ammo having weight is nice but so far I'm just barely to the halfway mark of being encumbered.

I like how the story is being set up so far with different factions vying for control of the area. And the veiled hints that Mr. House might have been behind your rescue at the beginning. All that will be fun to follow up but right now there's a big wasteland out there to explore. I don't know when or if I'll ever make it to Vegas.

I set this aside to play some Fable 3. It's strange how they found a way to dumb it down from Fable 2 to a frustrating degree, almost to the that the actual adventuring seems like meaningless busywork. Once you become king though, you're given an incredibly awesome sequence of Good/Evil questions where you're making moral choices that have instantly tangible outcomes. I'm trying to be good and the decisions you're making are all blatantly and clearly black and white, but they found a way to force you to consider moral gray areas where you normally wouldn't have to. I'm interested in seeing where it's going, in particular I've heard that if you try to game the system the game fucks you over to prove its point.

I bring this up here because it shows that I'm not against the idea of decision and consequence, just that it matters most when you're absorbed in the role playing aspect of creating a persona for yourself within the game, and less when you're forced to consider which storyline outcome you'll get to see, and which quest chains you'll cut off, which is where I am with many of the decisions in New Vegas. I'm not role playing, I'm gaming the system.

so if it didn't tell you "mission xyz failed' when you decide to play by your own rules, you'd like it more?

That would be cool- just have the world morph as it goes along, sometimes reacting to your changes, but you only get to find out through observation and dialog.

I don't think so. It's more about the motivation to make the choices you do than anything else. I'm not sure that hiding the message would change the fact that I'm making my decision based on perceived game benefits.

What I'm talking about in Fable makes it very clear what the result of your decision will be prior to making it. You just need to weigh the cost vs the benefits, and morality and personal values plays a huge role. Voting on the propositions yesterday reminded me a lot of playing Fable 3.

Also white me and my white wife inexplicably had a black baby.

Yes! I loved that. Also the Black Mountain quest, which I just finished. I like how some of these quests have non-violent solutions.
