No, but it looks like I'm about to!
I've been told to listen to him by a lot of people. It's on this time for real. _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

helicopterb: Check out this Saul Williams music video.
I know the album's released midnight tonight, but this I found this amusing nonetheless: Trent Reznor leaked three tracks, right on the frontpage of nin.com. He also linked to an interview of him and Saul. The first track, Tr(n)igger is built almost entirely out of samples from Public Enemy's Welcome to the Terrordome. You can really feel the Reznor influence on the two other ones (They contain samples from The Fragile era material that was cut from the album, so it should be interesting to NINnies on those grounds alone).
Speaking of Public Enemy, I found the unreleased remix album Bring the Noise 2000 here. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

First part of Trent detailing the production process, track by track. Personally, I'm far more entertained reading his post history and seeing him troll the forums. It's pure comedy gold and hilarity. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

Yeah, I didn't like it. I don't like that guy's delivery.
Dizzee Rascal's got a few tracks where his delivery is lifted from rock bands like Sepultura and even the Sex Pistols and they work pretty well, so I'm not against this sort of crossover in principle. I love Public Enemy, too. So I should like this but I don't. He's taken the wrong things from rock music and the wrong things from hip-hop and put them together in a way I don't like :( |

I like it!
Dizzee's a little spastic. (I don't mean that as a negative, but Saul's delivery is a much more calculated weird, whereas Dizzee seems like he's just fucking around.) _________________ Like you thought you'd seen copter perverts before. They were nothing compared to this one. |

http://remix.nin.com/ is up. Reznor has put some of his own stuff up there, including remixes of older NIN albums and instrumental versions of some of his latest tracks and the like, which you can download. A cool experiment. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

I think what I like most about this song is that instead of a pop song with a random guy rapping over the middle, it's a pop song with the actual "singer" rapping over the middle.
Also, I like the song!
Haha, man, the comments for this video. Wow! _________________

Guys, I made a music video recently for an unsigned rap artist, since I have designs on working as a director in some capacity. I haven't started sending it off and showing it around to record companies in earnest yet, but I'm still having a hard time getting people to watch or care about it outside of my immediate circle. If I post it here will you watch it and comment on it or pretend it doesn't exist like you did my stand-up comedy and my cryptic treasure hunt?
If you want to see it I will need ten responses in the affirmative :| |

Thanks!
I'm trying to organize a remix project so I can actually bear to listen to the video. I got Mark to give me an acapella to work of off. I don't know if anyone here can do music? |

Oh yeah, I went to that Prefuse 73 concert, it rocked. I completely forgot about the one thing I hate about concerts though. It lets me see who else is a fan of the music I like. 'Tis a sad and infuriating thing sometimes.
Here's one of my favorite songs by them, http://youtube.com/watch?v=1UylSj5hrBM
Note, that's a fan video, so that's why it's incredibly boring. |

white rap fans are indeed a saddening.
if it makes you feel better i went to support a friend who was playing at a show with frontalot and shaeffer the darklord or however he spells his name. that was really hard to listen to, much less watch.
also cycle a while back i made a 2.5 hour ambient mixtape _________________

in more positive news i've heard the new jesu is bewilderingly pretty and i've also heard secret chiefs are coming out with a new album.
also my friend is going nuts cause nine inch nails released all their multitrack stuff from most of their songs over the years for fans to remix. i'm going to download a few and maybe have a stab at something. (i really like the guy's production but goddamn i can't hang with the singing and lyrics) _________________

fuck i'm so old i used to listen to broken and seasons in the abyss before football games in high school. so just fyi.
fuck.
also from back in june:

Broken is sweet and probably one of NIN's best, yeah. Year Zero is up there too, but don't ask me what else to add to that. I don't really get why people hate so bad on the lyrics, though, but that's just me and I'm utterly biased, what with them being my first entry into modern music. I mean, Swans are sure as Hell a lot more morbid about their angst, is for sure.
Have you heard the free Saul Williams album he produced, dhex? You should give it a go. I hear a lot of people who are not familiar with Williams and hold some disdain towards Reznor's lyrics as essentially being a case where NIN-like sounds meet someone who can write and sing.
And how do you feel about Fixed? _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

I'm down with Trent! Didn't care much for PHM machine (don't think it's bad, but musically it didn't appeal to me), but Broken is awesomesauce, it sounds so brutal (the lyrics, music and vocals all working together). The Downward Spiral is one of my favourite albums, again I think everything works together so well on that album, and it's one of the first albums I heard that really made me realise the power of music as an art form. I wrote a huge essay on it for school, wish I still had it.
The Fragile sounds fantastic, but both his vocals and lyrics were rather poor on that release, and With Teeth felt like a rather medicore rock album (aside from some gold like Only) from someone who didn't know where he wanted to go.
Year Zero has him back in top form, brilliant album that. _________________

I seem to remember Mike and I agreeing at some point that the best NIN-related albums are Fixed and Further Down the Spiral, mainly because they take Trent's exceptional production and let people like Thirlwell and the folks from Coil play merry hell with it.
I mean, I like(d) NIN a hell of a lot* and Downward Spiral was one of the formative albums of my later years of high school; I just don't feel the lyrics very much, probably because I'm not a very angry person anymore. It's not just NIN, there's plenty of other bands that I find completely unlistenable at this point because they don't have the musical quality to go with the over-the-top woe-is-me.
* - Edited to note that I even saw NIN on the Downward Spiral tour, with Marilyn Manson opening right after the release of their first album. The videos that were projected behind NIN during the show were fantastic. |

Which version of Further Down the Spiral, though? They did change a number of tracks for the US and UK release. Also, Aphex Twin making two songs for it without ever having heard NIN before.
Swans is something else. It's amazingly raw, for one.
Also, dhex, have you heard Jesu' Pale Sketches album? It's a collection of unreleased material and the like. _________________ "This is the most fun I've ever had without being drenched in the blood of my enemies!" |

This would have been much more accurate if I did it before my last computer died. I still haven't recovered most of the music. Like 2000-ish songs are m.i.a. until I get off my ass and get them back. But:
