he has good taste in coil remixes to be sure.

i think surgeon is a good dj and a decent, if somewhat predictable, remixer. but i've never really enjoyed his other releases, though. that's almost weird. but they're different skillsets, really.

It's Halloween innit, so there's really nothing else that one can listen to except King Diamond.

Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Frozen Corpse Stuffed With Dope.

This album is the dope, the corpse is shitty overhyped hardcore bands. It blast posers at several hundred bpm.

why would i sell my ticket to see venetian snares? gira lives in ny, so he plays here quite a bit.

also it's like choosing between two foods you really like. you don't actually lose, you just can't eat both meals at once.

she who shall not be named didn't actually enjoy this go around too much - the new album is very proggy, and she longs for the days of ryan moore and song structure, now banished. however, they did play 16 flies in the marmalade and princess coldheart so it was not a total loss.

personally i think it reinforces the obvious fact that men who wear berets cannot be trusted.

But should I be checking out The Tear Garden?

P.S. So, reissues have Zdzisław Beksiński artwork, huh? Neat.

i can only really vouch for "to be an angel blind..."

it's interesting. it's a bit sloppy, but more or less what you'd think skinny puppy and edward ka spel would do when hanging out and smoking lots of pot.

I enjoyed Things That Go Bump in the Night, which was included on an Subconscious Communications compilation I stumbled upon about eight months back.

What LPD albums would anyone recommend? I remember downloading and listening to a variety of them when I was a teenager, but none of them ever stuck. I doubt I was in much of a position to appreciate them. The one song that I do remember is a collab with Nurse With Wound, The Window on the World.

Nemesis Online is where I started; it's good! So's the Whispering Wall. I didn't like All the Kings Horses/Men. And I have no knowledge of their earlier stuff.

i would start with canta mientras puedas, a collection of early tracks. it's very solid from beginning to end, and will tell you if you'll like crushed velvet apocalypse and the maria dimension. out of newer things i do like nemesis online, and am mostly ok with a perfect mystery and all the kings horses. all the kings men did nothing for me, and i do not like the new album.

basically if it's early or ryan moore is on it, it's probably worth trying. if not, it's probably going to be more prog wank than i can handle, but everyone else's mileage may vary.

my wife is the person to ask about this but she's in tennessee right now so...yeah.

man i've had hells of updates lately trying to just document whatever i'm listening to at the time.

also got some annoyed comments from the director of that today is the day video i did not care for in the slightest. that was...interesting. sometimes you gotta know when to strangle the baby in the crib, as it were, when it comes to creative endeavors. five hours wasted will not generally turn into 10 hours of greatness just because you double the amount of time thrown down the drain.

so it's been a lot of time machines, ambient 2, and the threshold houseboys choir. i'm still waiting for my dvd copy to come so i can see what the score is - sadly the pound isn't dropping as fast vis a vis the dollar as the euro has, even though it burns my ass that this vacation in ireland this past summer would have been maybe a third of the cost had we gone now. of course it'd be cold and rainy now, or rather, moreso, but still.

so yeah linkwhoring over.

Tons of African stuff- Analog Africa, Soundway, Strut, Vampi Soul and Sterns Africa have all put out FANTASTIC compilations this year. Here's a free mix from Samy Redjeb of Analog Africa; I can't think of many better ways to spend 45 minutes.

Let Me Be A Woman (1995) is an Albini production, An Evil Heat (2002) is probably their best overall, but I think I prefer The Narcotic Story (2007) as I think the band's tightest there, even if it's a little more pop (if you could call it that).

Max Roach: Percussion Bitter Sweet. A couple of these cuts are very good, but mostly the album is hard to get excited about.

The Walkemen: You & Me. I have trouble dealing with all the harsh echo. I hope to overcome myself and give this an honest listen.

The Beatles: Let It Be. Why is "Get Back" such a wonderful tune? Worth the rest of the album. The first two tracks ("Two of Us" and "Dig a Pony") really stir my fancy, too. Oh, and the album version of the title song is the one with the good guitar solo, not the bad one on the radio.

Bluegrass group the Steeldrivers are great. My friend Trey heard them playing at a Kentucky barbecue festival, so he gave me some of their songs. Listen to "If it hadn't been for love" from their myspace. You're not allowed to turn it off until you hear everyone sing at once. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=67169343

And that Pacific Ocean Blue re-release from Dennis Wilson is gorgeous. I never knew the original, and I haven't listened to the whole thing at once yet, but it sounds like a piano-horn-barbershopquartet band trapped inside a conch shell.

I went back to that Flying Lotus and couldn't really find that range you speak of. It bored me a little, really.

Right now I'm listening to Nahvalr, which is the dudes from Deathconsciousness assembling crowdsourced bits of metal, and it sounds like a thrice overdubbed metal tape from a decade ago that went through the wash in the pocket of your black trenchcoat, being played on a shitty boombox at the far end of an air duct. The air duct is also full of spooky child-ghost-demons from Japanese horror movies. And the building may be under attack by orcs.

The Neil Young live album just released.

Whole thing is wonderful. Track 1 is a knockout.

Love hearing him mess up playing Classical Gas.

Beatdrop releases a new free album, Revolution.

Giddy and rocky EBM influenced techno-industrial music.

Old or new? I thought Saint Dymphna was terribly boring, but I remember liking God's Money quite a bit.

Also boring: new Animal Collective. Looped to shit and back, boring trendy pseudo-hippy Brooklyn music.

Which album? I picked up an older used one cause Young God, but resold it pretty promptly.

Give God's Money a chance before you write off Gang Gang Dance though.

I think Animal Collective's pretty skippable on the whole. Try out their Vashti Bunyan collaboration and Panda Bear's Person Pitch, if you must.

the one you sold, as well as the two things they put out on secretly canadian (how we lost and giving up the ghost). it's a bit stereolabish in parts but evens out into something like om's poppy younger brother.

i listened to god's money a few times when it came out, and i just never got it. or it never got me. dunno.

rumor mill sez that a new akron family is due out in march. if you must pick one "weirdo" band to love, i think they're it.

Wale's "The Other Warwick Avenue" is up on his myspace page. Duffy's song has the best motown/burt bacharach production since motown/burt bacharach. Naturally, it can be made into a killer beat. Naturally, Wale kills the track.

Excited about the upcoming N.A.S.A release, which portends to be a miraculous hip-hop collaboration. Just heard "Spacious Thoughts" with Kool Keith and Tom Waits. It's a jam.

Renewing my relationship with Buddy Holly, many of whose hits I grew up with riding in my mom's car. "Peggy Sue" has got everything down pat. Surf-rock combined with a 12-bar blues, and beautiful spare production. It's all just Buddy's electric, his weird, weird voice, and this wild drum pounding and echoing in the back. The solo reminds me a lot of Billy Bragg.

Oh, and Delta lets you listen to an impressive database on its flights now. I was grooving to a Sam Cooke live album and Aretha's rare cuts and b-sides, which I think is one of Rhino's projects. All around fantastic stuff.

Bob Dylan line of the moment, from "Meet Me in the Morning":

Look at the sun
sinking like a ship.
Oh just look at that sun babe
sinkin like a ship.
Now ain't that just like my heart
when you kiss my lips?

NIN have released over 400 gigs' worth of live footage of their Lights in the Sky tour.

I mean, yeah, that much raw footage is useless to me, but that's still exciting and there's always this: http://thisoneisonus.org/

Dracko, I think NIN has made it a mission to supersaturate your ear-market so that no other bands can possibly fit inside.

Beats half-decade breaks in between albums.

Anyway, I've been listening to Have a Nice Day and so should you!

Charles Cooper, one of two members of Telefon Tel Aviv, has died.

Hello, Everyone.

It breaks my heart to inform you all that Charlie Cooper, my better half in Telefon Tel Aviv, passed away on January 22nd.

We have been friends since high school, and began making records together a decade ago. We have been so fortunate to tour the world together, while at the same time having a massive amount of laughs at one another's expense.

Aside from Charlie's singular genius and musical gifts, I can tell you that he was a total sweetheart of a guy, and a loving friend and confidant to people everywhere. His musicianship was surpassed only by his greater gift to the world - his warmth, his generosity, his unquenchable humor, and his undying loyalty to those whom he loved. In the spirit of honorable mention, however, I should mention that he had a shoe collection that was marvellous, knowledge of hip-hop that was profound, and knowledge of wine that was subtle.

He is survived by a sister, a niece, a nephew, his mother, his stepfather, me, and more adoring friends than the Universe has dark matter. As such, his family and I ask for your discretion and consideration of our privacy during these extremely turbulent waters.

Yours in Music,

Joshua Eustis
