Ghosts I sounded like a bunch of NIN backing tracks (as in, lacking). I listened once and deleted it with no intention of touching the others. Reznor seems to do great texture but terrible songs.

I don't agree with you either. I'm disagreeable.

In Rainbows is the album where, rather than reinvent anything on a major cosmetic level (i.e. pablo honey > the bends > ok computer > kid a), Radiohead have found a huge amount of unexplored space in the minutiae of their songs. The diversity of sound present in this record at the most immediate, microscopic level is astounding--the instruments, the orchestration, the melodic variations (especially phil selway's drumming) (good god phil selway's drumming), the thematic variations, the recording techniques. I defy you to find a single repeated measure, because you won't, even on the most formulaic songs (I'm looking at you, "Nude"). I think I said before that it is the work of a band totally disgusted with the idea of having to play the same note twice. It is one of the most joyfully daring records I have ever heard. Dracko, I expect that you consider Pet Sounds to be the work of eunuchs, as well, but damned if "15 Steps" doesn't give me the same hard-on as "God Only Knows." Not every work of genius has edges you'd have to close your eyes not to see or close your ears not to hear.

The Eagles - Greatest Hits, right?

Seriously, it would be pretty neat sometime to do a live commentary with the two of us while simultaneously listening to the album. A little good cop/bad cop. Granted, it would mean that you'd have to sit through the album a whole way through. I'll buy the beer to balance out that minor issue.

I found Ghosts I to be the weakest by far. I really enjoy a couple tracks, but I could pass on most. The rest of the album is (mostly) much, much, much better.

Do you have the Deluxe edition with the whole Tommy thing? It sounds a bit rushed at points, but that they could bust that out in the middle of the regular set just makes the Who that much more amazing. That whole concert is, yeah, just well...fuck.

Yeah, the deluxe edition, I like the rushed Tommy actually, "Amazing Journey - Sparks" is spectacular.

Today was a "crank Kid 606 while driving to work" day.

Don't bet on a better verse coming out of hip-hop this year than Andre 3000's on the track "Royal Flush"--unless you count his previous contribution on "Da Art of Storytellin' pt. 4"

http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/audio/id.4491/title.big-boi-f-andre-3000-raekwon-royal-flush

The hokey-pokey regains its clout.

(Big Boi and Raekwon aren't lackidaisical either.)

Did they play Gantz Graf?

Man, I remember seeing Squarepusher with Pierre Bastien a couple of years back. It was grand stuff: Jam session followed by a remix of it.

I'm hoping to catch Saul Williams when he comes round to London by the end of May.

Rediscovering The Young Gods these days. I'm not as sold on industrial rock as I used to be as a teenager, but theirs is something else.

naw it was mostly mashes of their new album type stuff with a lot of one one two dancehall beats that would skewer off center like some kind of giant insect made out of bass.

The Thermals are pretty fucking fantastic. They play upbeat apocalypse music. Heavy on guitar riffs and melody lines with low note counts. I think I would love to see them live

Here's a link of them playing some music. But it's from pitchfork, so I understand if that makes you not want to click it because it's pitchfork and nothing they do should ever be considered a resource.

Anyhow, the first song is my favorite.

I like to pretend in my head that I live in Portland. But in that dreamworld I go to shows like Eternal Tapestry or Valet, so that might not help you much.

A new NIN song is out and something is planned for the fortnight, according to the official website.

Hey all you Portisheadheads! Tell me about Portishead in a thorough but succinct way so that you can sell a cd to me. I've never heard anything beyond some of their 30-second itunes samples.

They were great! They sound like the music the dude from the Prisoner would have heard if he'd fallen through the floor in the village and landed directly in the antechamber that houses the dark secret at the heart of it all.

How did I know that's what you were going to say?

Personally, I'm not really getting it. I think, past the nostalgia, their old records are a little boring, and this one I'm finding just too bare musically to sustain itself.

The Scarlett Johansson album of Tom Waits covers leaked. It's surprising. Kind of dreampoppy and hookless; apparently Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio produced, and I think he made most of the other creative decisions too. Scarlett's got a very plaintive voice with no range whatsoever, but he turns that into an asset, in a way.

it's not what i would think of, no.

it's like film soundtracks to sad things, possibly involving the french, but with nice production touches. (i.e. bass on wandering star off the first album)

New NIN single released via a Facebook application?

Reminds me of Queens of the Stone Age for some reason. Has that mellow stoner undercurrent.

But getting news on NIN is so easy and they played such a huge part in getting me into music and all kinds of genres that I'm always curious to know what they're up to. Especially these days.

Of course it isn't :O

When I was trying to get to sleep last night I heard my dad and one of his bummy old septuagenarian rocker friends talking about Portishead and they had exactly the same conversation about their new album I've been having with you guys. My interest in hearing this album suddenly dropped.

oh, harvey, you're so impressionable.

After being hooked on Night Falls over Kortedala for months, now, I picked up Jens Lekman's earlier album, When I Said I Wanted to Be Your Dog. It isn't as bouncy, but it has that same Lekman charm. If you only read the lyrics, you'd think he was clever, foreign, and disgustingly glib. But when you hear the music, and you hear how much effort he puts into his (sometimes enormous, sometimes minimal) arrangements, and you hear how much he's studied past pop music subgenres, and you hear what an ear he has for pop melody, you lose the impression that he is being haughty with his inanity.

Most romantic line? "So yeah I got busted, and I used my one call to dedicate a song to you on the radio."

You know, I held off on getting it until today because I heard Machine Gun on the air about a month ago and ... well, it felt aimless. Who knew there's an excellent album around it and it works much better as part of a whole than a single.

I know I don't normally post in this thread, but the most musically important/tragic thing ever happen to me today. Well, honestly it's more a hastle than anything. Essentially I some how lost about 13GB of music from my iPod when it vanished. More details on the story here.

I just wanted to pop in and post my iPod track list for good laughs here too LINK.

Anyways, I'm almost done using MP3Gain to balance out my audio levels on all the tracks. It took about 5 hours just to run that program on all my songs, but it probably took longer since I kept accessing the folder while the program was running in the background.

EDIT: After the Fragile, Ghosts is much more closer to what I was expecting from Trent than With Teeth. I really like it! In fact, I finally got around to the paid section (II-IV), so I'll get to listen soon.

Ooh, that hurts. I've been ripping a FLAC backup of all my CDs, but I've yet to back up the disc it's all going to. Every day I look at that external HDD and say a little prayer.

I was listening to Pram today. I wish Beth Gibbons would fire her dudes and record with them instead, if she needs to keep recording.

shapes, that sucks.

i don't know if i would call it aimless, but they did pick the harshest track on the album as a single. which is a neat way to do things if you're known for not being that harsh.
