Aegis Wings is free for a limited time on XBLA. Anyone get it yet? 4-Player hori shooter with online multiplayer... anyone?

It's a bit... Meh.

The main weapon doesn't power up, and there are only about 3 different baddies in the entire game. It's an uneasy mix between "bullet hell" and your normal kind of horizontal shooter.

It *does* have a fun sort of multiplayer, though. You can choose to either fly alone or join another player (until all four are joined) to have one player control movement and the rest mutli directional firing. It's fun because sometimes the person doing movement sucks, and so on.

I wouldn't pay for it, but it's a decent enough freebie, I suppose.

That's unfortunate, but at least it's free.

The story behind the creation of the game is pretty ordinary too. I guess it's cool for the interns and all, but not very special seeming.

Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (SNES, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)
Streets of Rage 2 (Sega Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)
Blazing Lazers (TurboGrafx16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points)

These would normally all be awesome releases, but, you know, there are now so many good games on the VC that $8 is starting to go beyond impulse buy and into "a bit too much" territory.

I'm starting to use the VC release schedule as something that lets me know what carts I might want to try to track down in the future. Pretty odd, huh?

in some sense, i've been doing that since january.

hopped on over to my one 360 owning friend's place to try aegis wing; it's a terrible shooter, but in keeping with the "why else would you play a brawler" mentality (that seems popular enough on XBLA), four player co-op can salvage anything.

Yeah, apparently they also rated Shining in the Darkness. That's the first First Person RPG I ever really saw (aside from Lands of Lore for the PC, which is fucking awesome). I kind of hated it despite really liking a lot of things about it. Thankfully the stuff I liked about it was carried over into Shining Force and the stuff I didn't like was left behind. Still, with everyone talking about Etrian Odyssey I'm kinda curious what the general perception of Shining in the Darkness is. Has anyone else here even heard of it?

I'd say it's entirely non-essential except as a nostalgia piece. Maybe dess will have a rebuttal that'll make me look a little foolish, but I couldn't find a thing engaging about it. It felt like an entire game of those lifeless first person RPG segments that made me stop playing Phantasy Star.

It's got some very charming character art. You have to get quite a bit into it before it stops being utterly boring though.

Nintendo Power seems to imply that Super Paper Mario will be next up.

If so, it will be the first game which I still own a physical copy of that I will purchase gladly.

i believe you mean paper mario? and anyway, i wouldn't count on it - NP also claimed zelda 2 would've been out forever ago, and it certainly isn't - a much more likely n64 release candidate is f-zero x, which was recently released in japan.

Fuck fuck fuck Actraiser!!!!! Now I have to scare up some change to convert into WiiBucks™ so I can get this and Ninja Spirit.

Oh well, I'm too poor this month to afford any "real" games, so this will tide me over!

the eventual not-virtual-console wii download service remains the only potential place for space harriers now that the game cannot be played anywhere.

I own Street Fighter 2 Turbo a million different ways, and now I can own it once again! I've been waiting for the Virtual Console release, because I was weaned on the SNES versions of the games. I'm totally going to buy this.

Now I'll have it for PS1, XBLA, Super Famicom (fo' realz), and Wiiiiiiiii.

Honestly, it is incredibly bizarre that this game is being distributed.

Well I nabbed 2000 WiiBucks and got SF2T; I kind of regret it, but yeah... there it is. Now I need to spend the other points I have. I really want an N64 game but there aren't any out yet that are a must-buy for me.

I thought it was a little better the last time I played it. Cool!

You know, the worst thing you can do is buy 2000 Wii points and not know what to spend it on. You'll end up buying all kind of junk games you don't really need. Just buy the points when there's like three things out that you definitely want.

Yeah, you're totally right. I really want Ninja Spirit, but I better wait until I'm done with Layer Section. If I have too many options, I end up not enjoying any of them.

I got Ninja Spirit and Punch Out!! last weekend. Punch Out!!'s amazing, but Ninja Spirit isn't all I had heard. I prefer Ninja Gaiden 1, 2, or 3 and/or Shadow Dancer and/or Shinobi 3. I'm actually kind of surprised Dess likes it as much as she does. It's not bad or anything, I just didn't see anything beyond the shadow power-ups tht really make the game stand out.

Alright, Hudson updated their US VC page with upcoming games for this month. Basically: Dragon Spirit on Monday, followed by Air Zonk, Silent Debuggers, Devil's Crush and Drop Off in the following month. Yup.

Today is Canada Day (Happy Fucking Canada Day!) and thus I don't have to work tomorrow. What Virtual Console delights will I wake to? (Or rather, wake up at 6:30 and wait for?)

I'm also enjoying Contra III a lot more now that I remember things like, uh, being able to hold two weapons. (Hey, Persona, do a 4-koma "nyoron" comic about me!)

Bomberman Live! with 8Player online next week. I will probably get it to see what all the hub-bub about OMG BOMBERMAN MULTIPLAYER has always been about.

so bomberman live is up. i played the trial, but all of the interesting stuff (as in the stuff that would let me compare the game to my current favorite bomberman) is only in the full game. the good news is there is interesting stuff: my favorite map from bomberman '94 (the trapdoor stage) seemed to have made it in, along with "revenge" (players who have died are allowed to keep contributing to the chaos from the sides, instead of putting down their controllers and waiting for the other players to finish).

the most curious thing, though, is probably the "girl power!" achievement. win an all-female match while wearing a full female costume? what?

Whoa, that was XTREME.

Man, it seems to me like Doom just ages so much better visually than most other almost-3D shooters. Maybe Duke excepted.

Still, can't wait to give this a go and see what all the fuss is about.

My guess is that this has to do with the costumes.

So... what's the final word? You going to buy it?

Don't let the explosions fool you, though I did laugh at them (I hope they were meant to be funny): Marathon is an awesome series. It did a lot first. I know that doesn't count for much now that it's all become standard, and better, since, but they are still great games. I didn't see a release date though, so I'll just have to twiddle my thumbs until then.
