Dammit guys, this thread makes me really want a tablet, even though my artistic ability is basically nil (as can be evidenced by my Goomba picture from the Spritetology thread).

I keep meaning to sign up for a Community College art course, just so I can work on perspective and other fairly basic artistic concepts that I never managed to grasp.

Get a tablet! They're great fun, regardless of artistic skill!

You should take figure drawing courses too!
They really help you improve quite quickly as you learn to draw a person as well as compose images on a page and what not. At first you'll be terrible at it (and want to kill yourself and burn everything you do) but after a year of practice, you'll be GOOD!

Figure drawing for fun and profit!

So guess what I spent some of my voluntary tax refund on!

Now I need a good program to use this thing in. I have basic image manipulation software that I'm pretty used to, I'm afraid that they aren't so snazzy with the tablet (no eraser support, no pressure support, etc.).

Suggestions? Advice?

i use paint shop pro. it's about a bajillzzion times cheaper than photoshop, if you want to go the legal route, and if you don't it's still easy to get working.

did the tablet come with any software? My wacom 3 came with painter classic, which is a lite version of an illustration industry standard.

mine came with photoshop elements 3, which refuses to install, corel painter essentials 2, which is nifty but not that versatile, and virtual post-it note software.

Yeah, mine had the same package as Dess's. I've been playing around with Corel Painter, which is okay, if fairly basic.

We'll see if I feel like forking over for something more involved. If I do, it will probably be Paintshop Pro, as Photoshop is ridiculously expensive.
