I realized that's true for me, too after I made that post this morning. But I still like kicking around fruit.

Woah. Has the hating on Super Mario Sunshine really gone on long enough for to turn into underdog praise?

If the old IC forums were on the internets somewhere, you could go way back in time to when I said it was better than SM64.

Does this mean I no longer have to hide my face in shame?

Not really. I think everyone wants to find something to like about it, though. The nuts and bolts of the game are so polished and tight, it's just the structure and mission design that lets it down. According to this interview with the director, the whole 'Shines' thing was cobbled together in the last year of development, which kind of shows through.

it's . . . kind of a matter of proportion? like, you shoot it, and then it splits in half. so you shoot the halves and they split in half. so you shoot those halves and they split in half. so you shoot those halves . . .

Natural Selection.

I've been playing since it came out. And I just can't. get. good.

I'm good at pretty much every other major offshoot of Half-Life. But not NS. I know the gameplay, I know the maps, I know the strategies, to some extent. But fuck if I'll ever be able to see a skulk in some of those levels, much less kill one.

I think that calling it 'underdog praise' is a result of how high the series's bar had been set before. I think the bottom line with Mario Sunshine is that it's very inconsistent, a feeling which is heightened by the focused specificity of the mission structure. At the same time, it's incredibly varied. There are so many aspects of the game that just work. Pity it doesn't hold up the whole way through. I'm very tired. I need to go to bed and collect my thoughts.

And Swimmy: Wes is right. It's still not okay to think Sunshine is better than 64. It is okay to think that Galaxy will blow Sunshine out of the water.

I like the idea that something could be so awesome as to blow sunshine out of the water. It sounds almost poetic!

Galaxy looks 'a bit more like it'.

Nothing will ever make up for how terrible the camera is at some of the most important times.
