SHIT! I hope you have lots of footage of the Saturn Dracula X; I'm really looking forward to this episode.

Yakumo, what's going to be different between this showcase of Shenmue on Saturn and the previous footage you featured?
Yep, lots of Nice Saturn Castlevania footage including Ritcher and Maria playing.

Have I already featured Saturn Shenmue on Retro Core? Bugger, that isn't on the Retro Core listing file (which I'll be making public soon as an excel file). Hmm, probably nothing different apart from the audio track.

I'm looking forward to this regardless. I always liked the diverse selection of games, and that the show is all game footage. This show has turned me on to a lot of games I otherwise wouldn't have heard about.
Glad to hear that. I try to stay away from the main stream stuff as much as I can. You'll never see the likes of FIFA on Retro Core unless it's shite of the month :p

PS: Volume 28 is shaping up to be better than volume 27 I think. Yes it's almost complete even though vol.27 isn't online yet.

Yeah, some of the guys over at ASSEMblergames want me to film more stuff like that. THere probably won't be any in volume 28 (due for download in January) but I'll do something for volume 29 in the snow (Hopefully we'll have some in January when I'll be filming it).

Yes, all the locale shots are great. Even the car trip through the inter-island tunnel was entertaining! Have you ever officially disclosed where it is you live?

Yep, I live in Shimonoseki City, which is the last city on Honshu (the main part of Japan) I can see the sea from where I live. Maybe I'll show you a map if needed.

I'll be able to find it! I'll be in Japan next spring, but not anywhere near there. It's a reasonably small place, isn't it? About 250,000 people or so, it seems. It looks warm! I would probably die. :-)

I have no idea about the population mainly because I don't care :p The city size is 224 KMsq. Shimonoseki is located at the westernmost of Honshu, the main island. About 680 miles southwest of Tokyo, 50 miles east of Fukuoka. In fact Korea is only 120 miles away !

Laughing it's ok, that is south Korea. In Shimonoseki we have signs in Japanese, English and Korean.

I've got only minor nitpicks about retrocore:
(Note that I really loved to watch it on my weekends)

Complacency in terms of video/audio quality. Too often noises or bad balance between music and speech. Also I'm not fond of the dissing of anything remotely western. And it's a bit too repetitive, too formal.

In a way it brings back the fun I had as a kid of looking at toy catalogs. Page after pages of goods and bright colors.. With some sort of categorization, but quite impersonal.

I'd like to know what you mean of too formal. I'm not having a go or anything but I'd be interest in knowing what you think is formal. As for the western game dissing I haven't done that (that I'm aware of) recently. I was brought up with the best from Japan when I was kid so a lot of the western stuff seems too shallow or ugly to me compared to the Japanese games I was playing. I guess I've just stuck with that. Of course there are many western made games I love (mostly European) such as the Turrican series, MSR, Project Gothem, Head Hunter and so on.

Yakumo

PS: what shows are you watching? I think since volume 20 the audio tracks have been pretty much OK. Then again I'm not watching the download versions that are greatly reduced in Quality from the DVD originals.

He means you don't do enough wacky sketches where you run around the woods pretending to be in Animal Crossing.

Hahahaha, good old Video Gaiden / Consolevania ! Those guys are mad but great fun to watch !

Talking about how I suport my show, yes I do sell online but what is best is that I do all the exclusives on the DC shooters from Sega Direct. The next one is Trigger Heart coming in February.

Retro Core Volume 27 is out now for download but I suggest that you use the FTP or URL download options over at archive.org because the official FTP will be going on and off line for a week or so. It's off line right now as I right this. Here is a link to the Retro Core 27 page over at archive.org - http://www.archive.org/details/RetroCore_Volume27

Got it! I skipped ahead to the game store footage. Did that blue-and-white clad store employee see you, or did you manage to hide your camera in time?

Also, out of curosity: how do you shoot when you're in these stores? Do you shoot from the hip, or are you more obvious?

Nah, the guy spotted me which is why I had to make a run for it Very Happy I originally told him that I'd stopped filming but he saw me again.

When I film in shops like this the camera is held by my waste in a black case looking thing with only the lense sticking out. My camera is a Sharp Viewcam so it7S ideal for filming while in a bag since only the lense sticks out while the main body of inside the bag or whatever I'm using.

I like how you have two versions of Death Crimson on the show, but only one of them gets the coveted Shite of the Month award.

Speaking of which, I... I have to look away every time the SOTM title comes up. God, I'm getting sick just thinking about it....

Because only the 1st Saturn Death Crimson is truly shite. In Japan there are two Dreamcast Death Crimson games being 2 and OX 2 is shite (Think that's the one that was released in the US) while OX is not too bad and was even converted to the arcade and PS2.

That shot of the toilet in Shite of the month isn't real crap you know. It's coffee !! I'm not that sick that I'd film real crap being flushed away. Laughing

by the way, Retro Core 28 is now available for download over at Archive.org - http://www.archive.org/details/RetroCore_Volume28

Thank the heavens that isn't real feces. I think I still just have a natural aversion to toilets. Gross....

I'm going to download this tomorrow. Thanks for clearing up the Death Crimson issue.

you have kiki kaikai on your phone and you didn't show us ;_;

also i'm pretty sure you completely and totally failed to describe the gameplay of ninja cop. it was nice to see it there, though!

and mesopotamia. which i've several times now considered buying before deciding that the kind of hard mesopotamia is is not the good kind of hard. it's completely amazing for what it is, though.

oh, and you're not nearly as bad at esp ra.de. as i was expecting you to be.

Yeah, I know Sad That was done really late at night or should I say really early morning. I couldn't be bothered to tell the truth. Sorry. It is a great game though.

Cheecky bugger :p I'm actually pretty good at completing shooters. Did Under Defeat pretty quickly. I'm no 1 credit complete king that's for sure but I do enjoy shooters very much.

I mean, it seems more pratical for fighting, I'll give it that. But I like how her Street Fighter costume has this blend of traditional (or stereotypical, if you want to call it that) Chinese dress with modern sensibilities (those bracers and boots!). Plus it's just pretty hot.

I spelt it wrong? Bugger! That will teach me to rush through things.

Well, I haven't been here for a while so I'm surprised to see the new look. Not to sure which I prefer at the moment though. Anyway, some news on new Retro Cores. Volume 30 will be out on the 10th for all to download. Here's a list of what's on it along with the very poor effort of a cover.

Retro Core Vol.30 takes a look at the defences between a real gamers arcade and a family arcade in Japan. Loads of great games shown so defiantly one not to miss.
Featured games include...
Card Captor Sakura and Last Hope for the Dreamcast
Pilotwings 64 and Extreme G2 for the N64
Hard Drivin' (Shite of the month), Gun Frontier and Quovadis 2 for the Saturn
Crying and Gain Ground on the Mega Drive
F-Zero GX (game of the month) for the Game Cube
Sengoku 2 for the Neo Geo
Paperboy on the Master System
D2 (What ever happened to...) Panasonic M2
and Ridge Racer Wide Screen for the Moblie Phone

That's not all the Retro Core action you'll get in March though. In the later half of the month I'll be releasing the Dreamcast Shooting Special II. I'll let the DVD covers tell you what's going to be featured.

Just a heads up to let everyone know that the downloads are ready - http://www.archive.org/details/Retro_Core_Volume_30 It's a little late but at least I got it out on the right date Smile

There's a nice video viewer now on he download page. It's still in the beta stages however so it may not always work plus the quality is no where near as good as the download show. It's just for previewing purposes.

we don't take kindly to trash-talking ninja warriors around these parts.

granted the pce version is nowhere as good as the mega cd version which is nowhere as good as the arcade version.

Interesting show! Your enthusiam for the subject matter really comes across!

Where are you from originally? You sound like you're from either Newcastle or Scotland, but it's hard to tell since you've absorbed such a heavy Japanese accent on top of that. It's one of the most unique voices I've ever heard.

You should have that as your quote- 'One of the most unique voices in videogame journalism'. It'd technically be true!

The time has come although I wish it hadn't. Retro Core Volume 32 is the final Retro Core for the foreseeable future. I just no longer have the time to produce the show anymore now that I've become a father. Still, it's been a great 3 years and within that Time Retro Core has covered over 390 games.
In the final volume of Retro Core we take a look at the PC Engine and it's games. There are many PC Engine games that are also featured on the Mega Drive. Retro Core compare 4 of them side by side as well as taking a look at some of my personal favorite games in my collection. As well as that we've got Japanese game adds and the following games.

Dreamcast - Sakura Taisen 3 (Special Promotion movie)
Dreamcast - Shenmue 2 (Special Promotion movie)
Dreamcast - D2
Arcade - Wild Riders
Sega Saturn - Need For Speed
Sega Saturn - Burning Rangers
Sega Saturn - Duke Nukem' 3D
Sega Saturn - NiGHTS into Dreams (Game of the month)
Sega Saturn - Hyper Dual
Mega Drive - Aero Blasters
Mega Drive - Golden Axe
Mega Drive - Valis III
Mega Drive - Zero Wing
PC Engine - Aero Blasters
PC Engine CD - Golden Axe
PC Engine CD - Valis III
PC Engine Super CD - Zero Wing
PC Engine Arcade CD - Garoundensetsu Special (Fatal Fury Special)
PC Engine - Final Soldier
PC Engine - Space Harrier
PC Engine - Download
PC Engine - Paranoia
PC Engine - Ninja Spirits
PC Engine - Pop'n Twinbee
PC Engine Super CD - Psychic Storm
PC Engine Arcade CD - World Heroes 2
PC Engine Super CD - L-DIS
PC Engine Super CD - Shubibiman 3
PC Engine CD - Horror Story
PC Engine Super CD - Ranma 1/2
Mobile Phone - Shutokou Battle Evolution

hehehe, nobody seems to know where I'm from thanks to my accent being lost in the world of japan. I'm originally from Liverpool. Even though I never did have a strong scouse accent it was easy to tell I was from there. I've been in Japan now for about 9 1/2 years.

Nooooooooo! Retro Core will be missed, but congratulations on fatherhood.

This episode looks to be the best yet, and includes a whole bunch of games I would have loved to see. Thanks for the ride, Yakumo! Keep us apprised of any future projects, please.

P.S. Now that RC is complete, will you be offering any kind of package deal for the whole series (or volumes)?
